You can just look at headlines like that and understand a lot about the News Media. The fact that they word Laszlo's purchase as "Spending $800,000,000 on a Domino's pizza" is entirely disingenuous, but it makes regular people get excited about big numbers!
Go back a few thousand years and I'm sure there were people trading clumps of gold worth way more than we would today for food. "Meet the desert caravan that traded spices for $50,000,000".

Smart way to lure viewers. Its funny how they call him the pizza guy. Nobody cares about his real name and only think about this particular moniker. Hilarious. Looking forward to what he has to say about BTC and whether he is still planning to spend BTC on pizzas.

That's a good plan to make the world know about the Pizza Billionaire. Just a ten years of time, but what has happened with the network is very big and unachievable with anything that is centralized. If something similar to bitcoin have grown big under any of the centralized system surely by now governments would have acquired it. Let's wait for the words of PIZZAMAN.

Well, that is marketing for you and we live in the world of marketing right now and even into the future. It is actually nice that 60 Minutes is giving time for the Bitcoin Pizza Day which is all known not just within the world of cryptocurrency but even in the mainstream media. This was part of the founding stories surrounding bitcoin and can now be part of the legends as well as myths on those days (a real legendary story if I may add).

It sure is just marketing, and it sure is goddamn effective. Were talking about CBS News anyway, so they surely know what they're doing. The thing though is, there's a fine line between great marketing, and straight-off bullcrap clickbait(which this one is).

Well, actually $800.000.000 mln at this rate, I bag he didn't know that BTC will go so far I agree, no one would really buy pizza with that value. Who would know that Bitcoin could go this far? There were actually people who have sold hundreds of their bitcoins while the prices are too low. It's good to hear different stories from previous holders, and it could help us learn a lesson.

Yup, such discussions are absolutely retarded. All those bitcoins were absolutely worthless at that time. He spent exactly the same amount of money as this pizza cost. So if the price was 10$ then he also spent $10. From the same positions we can guess that BTC price would be much higher in 10 years and when today we sell $10 worth of BTC then in some time it could become your new house. Also with the same success we can blame ourselves that in 2009 I bought a bus ticket instead of grabbing my billions worth or BTC.

Some things are priceless. We all know the pizza guy, he became popular, there's even a bitcoin pizza day thanks to him. We could regret everything, like what if you did not buy that car, maybe you'd have a better one next year? What if you didn't go to a restaurant and bought yourself an Internet course on programming? What if you chose a different line of work or did not sell Bitcoins at 3k this year? Somebody did. Does that somebody have to blame himself for the rest of his days? That question was idiotic. I wish all best to Laszlo, he seems nice.

Well to be honest, If I were in his shoes back then, I would most likely do the same thing. Knowing that my bitcoins can purchase a box of pizza (not knowing that its price would skyrocket), I really would not hesitate that is why I don't judge his decision. Unfortunately, he could have left at least half the amount of his bitcoin and save it for long-term use. Yup, such discussions are absolutely retarded. All those bitcoins were absolutely worthless at that time. He spent exactly the same amount of money as this pizza cost. So if the price was 10$ then he also spent $10. Also with the same success we can blame ourselves that in 2009 I bought a bus ticket instead of grabbing my billions worth or BTC.
That is actually true. I bet that someone has the idea of bitcoin reaching this kind of price in the market back when its price was close to worthless. It is really difficult on where to draw the line between this one and his decision. I would not judge him, heck I would even do the same thing!

I think he will too sad to see the reality that he pays too much bitcoin for just buying pizza in a long time ago I am sure that he wants to turn back the time so he can cancel his order and only save his bitcoin for a long time so he can sell his bitcoin in 2017. But I think he will learn something from his story and he knows that bitcoin was precious and he will save more bitcoin after this (or he already did). He needs to calm down his emotion when he tells the story, and I am sure he can control his feeling.

Dude, that's a hillarious example for media reports these days. Media knows well how to manipulate information for their advantage. They will show it like get free money for signing up but they won't tell you how hard it is to undertake the signing up process. This is why I have stopped watching TV and I only watch those content on the internet which is reliable and gives out some knowledge.

The line is money. They go with whatever has proven to be the most effective way to get as many people to click and read their articles as possible. Not sure why people are still so triggered by this. Mainstream media is news for the masses, and the mass doesn't know what's click-bait or not. $800 million pizza is a money making headline, and it to some degree it actually holds some truth as well.

Laszlo Hanyecz you did the right thing, instead of selling it on a exchange you did what I did and bought goods with it, the whole purpose of bitcoin if you read the first sentence of the white paper. Do not feel you lost anything you gained a pizza that fed you and your little man. The people exchanging it for fiat are the ones who have lost their minds. It think it would be over 50k today let me do the math, wow what a guess. *edit* it was 340ish when I bought those cards (almost as bad as turning it into fiat I should of just bought from vendors straight up) $49528.23 you can tell those cards are old because they don`t even sell them anymore, just ebay ones. Meh I got a laptop and some clothes I am happy ^_^ fk the fiat, I also never bought the btc, I "earned" it and well a nice man gave me 1 on xmas that I turned into 5 gambling on esports in which I knew the players and buying a unit in huntercoin with btc and destroying the bots. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYJVG1fKnRoI found a glitch where if you spread the wallet window into another screen (I had duo screens) You could create more than 4 units, I was microing like 40 people at a time. The bots took over tho and started to auto kill real players, So I hid a unit under another color a red guy under a yellow guy, snuck it into the kings base and killed the king not once but twice and made like 3 btc in a few clicks. I literally Trojan horsed the AI lol, I remember I used to hide the green guys in the tree`s as well because the color bot was not configured to good and do some sick am bushes. R.I.P Huntercoin game dev, you showed me life is a blockchain and the end of bitcoin or gold. (He died shortly after the release of the simulation/game)

Seems the guy try to not think too much about the fact. Well, he could be almost a billionaire, but he just bought a pizza. He knows thinking like that isn't good for him... But since he is an early enthusiast, he might have many other bitcoins in his pocket. This guy made history and gave bitcoin community a day to celebrate every year.

I don't think that they really need to remind him about it , First of the value of 1 Bitcoin back then was so low and most of the people who use it back then doesn't even know that it would be this much, Do you think that if all of the early adopter or early Bitcoin user knows that it would hit so high they would use it as a regular currency to pay ?

He wanted to prove how bitcoin can be used to buy something way back 2010. So he doesn't give a damn if he could be billionaire by today's price. Him and Satoshi also exchange messages before so I'm sure he still have some stack of bitcoin stash somewhere as he is one of the earliest adopter. And takes to his move, bitcoin reaches the media and now he is considered as one of the pioneers and a legend.

Laszlo Hanyecz did not spend $800k on those pizzas, he spend a few dollars on those pizzas. How much did he pay for those coins back then? ….. not $800k. If we constantly have to regret the amount of money that we sold or bought specific items or goods for, then nobody would buy or sell anything. Imagine buying 10 000 shares in Microsoft when it listed for the first time in 1986 for 0.10 USD and selling it at $50 a share in Jan 2000.... Would you have known that it would have gone up to $120 in 2019 or $1000 in 2050.....? Laszlo Hanyecz is a very talented software developer and he is making more than enough money now, not to worry about things like that. In anyway, he is famous now for showing people that Bitcoin has value.

And just to set the record again, Laszlo Hanyecz has bought 2 pizza's this time using Lightning Network back in 2018. Here is his original post in the Lightning dev mailing list. https://lists.linuxfoundation.org/pipermail/lightning-dev/2018-February/001044.html[Lightning-dev] Pizza for (lightning) bitcoins? Laszlo Hanyecz laszlo at heliacal.net Sun Feb 25 01:29:59 UTC 2018
I wanted to try out a real trade using lightning network. I don't know of any pizza places near me that accept lightning bitcoin yet but a friend from London agreed to do it and he sub contracted out the pizza delivery to a local shop. In short, I paid bitcoin using the lightning network and he arranged for pizza to be delivered to me. In this trade my friend is just a middle man that is taking the risk on accepting lightning payments, but it demonstrates the basic premise of how this works for everyday transactions. It could just as well be the pizza shop accepting the payment directly with their own lightning node. I wanted two pizzas and to try to do it as close to atomically as possible. I didn't want to prepay and end up with no pizza. As far as I know we don't yet have pizza/bitcoin atomic swap software but we improvised and decided that I would need to provide the payment hash preimage to the delivery driver in order to claim my pizza. If I can't produce the preimage, proving that I paid, then the pizza would not be handed over and it would be destroyed. This works because I can't get the preimage without paying the invoice. I agreed to open a channel and fund it with a sufficient amount for what we estimated the cost would end up being. After we agreed to these terms my friend was able to verify that I funded a channel on the blockchain, which shows that I at least have the money (bitcoin). He is taking on some entrepreneurial risk and prepaying his sub contractor to prepare and deliver the pizza to me, but at this point I have not risked my bitcoins, they're just committed to a channel. I was given a bolt11 invoice which I decoded with the c-lightning cli to verify everything was as agreed:

You can just look at headlines like that and understand a lot about the News Media. The fact that they word Laszlo's purchase as "Spending $800,000,000 on a Domino's pizza" is entirely disingenuous, but it makes regular people get excited about big numbers!
Go back a few thousand years and I'm sure there were people trading clumps of gold worth way more than we would today for food. "Meet the desert caravan that traded spices for $50,000,000".
its a nice trick media have , and to make ppl that never done an investing so they dont realy understand , laugh at him for spending btc that was worth pennies at the time instead of saving them.

Well, thats quite regretting to be honest, but anyone who will be on his shoes might have done the same thing, as you are trying to make this technology work, since Bitcoin was created as currency. Back in 2009, isnt it amazing that someone was able to buy a pizza using Bitcoin as a mod of payment? Now, the story is completely twisted into a bad memory, as we all have no idea that Bitcoin will get this far

No one thought at that time that bitcoin will grow this big. It was still in its infancy and someone will have to change the course of history, and that's what the Pizza guy did, he bought it with huge amount of bitcoins and fast forward ten years, he should be crypto millionaire by this time. However, what he did was great because it attracted potential early investors or even dev's as well, that's why up to this day, bitcoin remains the dominant coin and will be in the next 10 years.

Looking forward for that interview since this is the most popular and controversial news in bitcoin history since no one will do the same in this age of years as bitcoin is now considered as the most precious thing on earth Umm, did you people not notice this actually happened on this forum nine years ago? Here is the original post: Pizza for bitcoins?I'll pay 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas.. like maybe 2 large ones so I have some left over for the next day. I like having left over pizza to nibble on later. You can make the pizza yourself and bring it to my house or order it for me from a delivery place, but what I'm aiming for is getting food delivered in exchange for bitcoins where I don't have to order or prepare it myself, kind of like ordering a 'breakfast platter' at a hotel or something, they just bring you something to eat and you're happy! I like things like onions, peppers, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes, pepperoni, etc.. just standard stuff no weird fish topping or anything like that. I also like regular cheese pizzas which may be cheaper to prepare or otherwise acquire. If you're interested please let me know and we can work out a deal. Thanks, Laszlo Besides, it was TWO pizzas. so halve those guesstimates And here they are: More context: Laszlo Hanyecz (laszlo) made the first documented purchase of a good with bitcoin when he bought two Domino's pizzas from jercos for 10,000 BTC. laszlo had made contributions to Bitcoin's source code in the past. He made history. At least that was better than putting your private keys or wallet.dat in a thumbdrive and then forgetting it, or leaving the wallet abandoned in a laptop discarded years ago... The CBS guy needs a calculator. At $8k price, ₿10k is 80 million, not 800. When bitcoin peaked on December 2019, it would have been 190 million. If bitcoin keeps going up (and it will) this joke will never end. What about that third guy that founded Apple Computers but left in the beginning because he didn't believe in personal computers much? When this transaction occurred, the two pizzas were about $41 USD.

I'm so glad that he did it. He showed the world that Bitcoin can be more than a speculative asset or virtual internet money. There should be no regrets. Many things could have happened with his coins over time. Maybe if he didn't buy the pizzas he'd lose it on Mt Gox or some other hacked exchange. We will never know. When this transaction occurred, the two pizzas were about $41 USD.
Those were some very expensive pizzas even at the time of buying.

As if the BTC that was paid was even close to worth that much in the past.
I think Laszlo Hanyecz (The Pizza dude) is erroneously blackmailed by the Press for trying to make him feel bad perpetually. He executed the first recorded Bitcoin transaction and that kick started Bitcoin. Why isn't the Press focusing on that? How much was Bitcoin worth back then that a lot of people now what to make it look like they knew Bitcoin would be a hit. I bet you, not even Satoshi knew Bitcoin would be this great. Otherwise he would be keeping more than the alleged 1million btc to himself.

The guy is going to be a legend in the crypto industry he would be put down in history 😂 . For sure he also manage to earn a huge money from crypto by now if he is still earning in crypto. I wouldn't think that this guy would just leave crypto currency after making a huge mark in crypto community.

Can't wait to see the interview. Would really love to no how the bargaining how the bargaining went down and what was the pizza guys idea about trading pizza for bitcoin. Definitely the pizza is the world most talked about and expensive pizza
Yes I agree with you even if it is just a short interview it will be interesting to see what he has to say. Because just as most people here who have heard this story when they began looking around the forums. It being a story about when bitcoin first started out exchanging it for items it means alot to some of the earlier members who were here to witness it. I for one would like to see the guy who traded a fortune for a slice of pizza.

I for one would like to see the guy who traded a fortune for a slice of pizza. "A horse, a horse, my kingdom for a horse" starts to sound reasonable now... To see it in another perspective, each of those pizzas is about what the "hackers" stole from Binance. So you could argue they stole a pizza. Also: Longtime CBS News journalist Steve Kroft will be retiring from "60 Minutes" after this Sunday's broadcast. He's been at the program for 30 years, and has reported nearly 500 stories. How nice to end with Pizza.

I'm just happy that Bitcoin is getting more coverage.
I'm sort of in the same boat as Laszlo I bought various things with Crypto, and it's been bittersweet. Once I spent half a bitcoin on baklava, because I wanted to use bitcoin as a currency.
I don't think letting go of your bitcoin without thinking is a good way to increase bitcoin adoption.
If he kept the Bitcoin he'd be nearly a billionaire, that's worth a lot more than being known as the pizza guy.
I don't personally regret spending my bitcoin, it felt good and it validated it in my mind and I'm sure in the mind of the person accepting it that it was a currency, as good as gold (and better because it's actually usable).
But even when I've donated to places like Khan Academy, and I donate regardless of whether they take bitcoin or not, it's a good cause, I see them then dropping bitcoin. So, spending bitcoin to prove it works is not as good as actually improving the protocol and spreading the message.
Seemingly 60 minutes will attempt to explain bitcoin to the masses once more. Hopefully some people will catch the same fever that most of us caught. Of course 60 minutes is covering bitcoin positively now that the market went slightly bullish, I doubt they would do positive coverage if it stayed at the same or a slightly lower price and they would all be laughing at us if it crashed dramatically calling it a ponzi scheme, and buying air and things like that.
I'll be into Bitcoin even if it crashes down to the price of 10,000 for a few pizzas.

I mean, it's alright to spend that much as long as you have already secured a savings for your future, I am sure with the millions of supply of bitcoin, there are investors during his time that did not do the same action, they held and they enjoy now.

The episode from the promotional commercials ran yesterday it is not just about the pizza guy but its was showing people riding in speedboats and living the rich life. It does sound like the pizza guy is just a part of the segment and they will discussing bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies and their influence and impact towards the financial world.
