Finally got the 4GB GPUs to work on Ubuntu 16.04. The trick was to do "./amdgpu-pro-install --px" when in onboard mode and it installed the drivers correctly.

Now the issue I am getting is "How the hell do you undervolt these AMD Polaris GPUs in Ubuntu"?

Basically with Windows all I used was WattTool to offset the voltage. In Ubuntu there is no such tool. There is "OhGodAtool" but it can only set clocks and doesn't set the voltage. So it seems that only way is to undervolt in bios correct? Wrong. Nothing seems to work.

I tried SRB and PBE. I used constant values like 900mV, I used those dynamic values like 65288, and after a dozen or so reboots, the voltage still doesn't change. Tried those Polaris bios modding guides and none of them seem to actually work.

Any idea if just setting -cvddc in Phoenix miner will work? I doubt it since the -cclock and -mclock failed to even work.

custom bios mod for 470s in Linux (SMOS)

I covered this step by step a few years ago circa 2016 I think....

Search for it on SMOS thread.

Its quite simple once you have all the tools to do it.

According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)

Why don't you use SMOS? It's quite easy and you can try it one month for free.

I am tempted to switch to mining ETH directly vs Nicehash.

ETH is up quite a bit, payout even for 2 ETH per block currently... the tx is huge - probably due to the that DEFI explosion - per tx needs as much as 8-9$ worth of gas/gwei!

https://etherscan.io/block/10658796

I am testing a rig to do dual mining, ETH and Zilica

Already switched with 6 GH/s, mining on ethpool.org, in 2 days I will get a block, will let you know if it was worthy or not...

On linux you have to use the amdgpu driver sysfs api to change the voltages.
I'm using gentoo and manually setting them but you can try using amdgpu-clocks https://github.com/sibradzic/amdgpu-clocks

After alot of tinkering finally figured out how to undervolt. Basically I kept trying to change the voltage on DRM 7 but I need to change it on both DRM 5 and DRM 6, most likely because the core clock is lower than default. Basically just typed out a script and it just runs as a batch on start-up.

I am pretty sure this is why it wasn't working in the bios updates either because I think I need to lower the core clocks from DRM1-6 so its lower than DRM 7 and DRM 7 needs to be the default clockrate of 1125mhz or so.

Hopefully I can at least get $1/day/gpu until Nov-Dec when the 4GB finally are put to rest.

thats great - with 6ghs. Whats power expense like?

With the 1.2ghs that I have now, I am dual mining ETH + ZILICA.

All of my 470,480,P106,1060 are offline now, still contemplating if worth to revive them....

Hey Citronik... what are you waiting for lol?  470's are netting 80-90 cents a day profit (with 11 cent electricity) and that's after the block rewards have dropped back down closer to 3 now.

I'm just irked that it's been so hot where i live last few days. Had to turn all my rigs off for 1.5 days and only running them overnight for probably 1 more day.  Oh well, anything off 470's is butter at this point. I almost started selling them off many times but now glad i didn't hopefully this will hold until their EOL in Dec.

I almost have all gear mining again  just one more rig to go . I just burned a usb stick and will set it up soon.

240+ GPUs sitting in the storeroom, waiting to be dusted... that's a big effort to put humpty dumpty back all over again..... to be useful for just another 3-4 more months.

Just getting all the 1080tis and Vegas up and running, was an intense 2 weeks work....

... but ok, I will get off my butt today and get the first 1060/P106 rig out since these GPUs dont need any effort in tweaking their hashrates compared to the 470/480s. There are still the Fury Minis and 390s in deep storage.

Those 470 are the fastest roi cards atm, you can roi them once more in 3 months before they can't mine eth anymore but there are still other coins for them like rvn were they have decent speed but not great W/$

Looking at

https://etherscan.io/chart/hashrate

You can clearly see that almost everybody is powering up their rigs again. Pretty much as long as your power is $0.30/kwh or less, you are making a profit and this is based on the old RX series, some of the newer GPUs are even more efficient.

Hopefully this will last at least till Nov/Dec and not a couple weeks like last time when ETH boomed.

I just had to deep clean and repaste 160+ RX 470's. Took a bloody week and I didnt have the energy left to flash them and set them up. Its been two years ... I had forgotten how much work this was.

My amd cards do really well on smos

my amd 5500 do 26-28 mhs and 63 watts
my amd 5700 do 51-52 mhs and 118 watts that is the software reading but the meter reading is not much higher.

I actually stopped doing any thermal repasting work. I used to do that to my old Litecoin mining gpus like R9 270 and R9 280X and I noticed was that sometimes the old thermal paste is stuck on the GPU, and you need to give it a yank. All is well however I noticed that after a few weeks certain GPUs would stop working.

Only fix was to do the oven heat method where you cook the GPU in the oven for a few mins, it always fixed it temporarily. Which meant that the solder joints somehow got cracked and I think it was during the thermal repaste job. So I don't do it anymore since it hardly had a temperature effect anyways on the cards.

How would that work Phil? Is there a way to inject memory straps/timings at runtime in smOS?

Holyshit dude you're scaring me. I wasn't particularly gentle with taking off the crusted cement like thermal paste either ... now I need to get them online and check them asap.

More delays of ETH 2.0 would be great, but as I understand it, even when implemented, it will now be a hybrid method that still allows mining during a transition period.  Many have speculated this could add 1-2 more years of mining for ETH.  What i have not seen directly addressed is the whether or not the block reward for mining will still be a minimum of 2.  If that is reduced to say 1 or 1.5, it may make it difficult to profitably mine ETH since the premium fee portion (addition) to current block rewards is expected to be significantly reduced with 2.0.
