I was curious to know.
I saw when someone send merits to someone then he/she received 0.5 sMerits and received 1Merits.

So, if, there are 100 members who has 100 merits (1 each) and they if they send their merits to 100 members who has 0 merits.

Now, they 100 members (1st) have 0 sMerits and another 100 members (2nd) 50sMerits.

Now, 100 members (2nd) has 50 sMerits and he/she sends his merits to another 50 members (3rd) and

This 50 members (3rd) have 25 sMerits.... and so on.... and it is going to end, right?

In future there maybe no sMerits?

There are many other various ways when sMerits seems limited for example

When users get Banned.

When users are not active.

That is why there are Merit Sources, to pump new merits into the System: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=sources

Quote
There are 130 merit sources with a total merit generation of up to 20895 sMerit per 30 days
Merit Sources are added (sometimes subtracted) every now and then to spur up the distribution process, and so is the merit allocated to each Merit Source adjusted over time.

Banned user’s sMerits are lost so as to say. Inactive users that decide not to come back, or even active users who don’t really play into the Merit System (specially with sMerits originated from the Initial sMerit airdrop) do add up to a considerable amount potentially, but as I said, sMerit Sources can theoretically make up for any lack of sMerit circulation, and have been adjusted in the past to keep the numbers on a certain level.

Edit: To answer your question, many of the large Merit Sources are known, be it by declaring it, or by other people detecting them (numbers have those things). Smaller newer Merit Souces may remain anonymous for a while longer. @Coin-1 does a good job of detecting most of them (see [TOP-200] The most generous users giving merits).

The list isn't publicly available (to avoid people begging them for merit).

This is the list of the users that received the most merit. There is also a list that shows the users that spent the most merit, which isn't necessarily the list of merit sources. However, chances of the merit sources being in there are high (for obvious reasons: if they receive sMerits constantly for free, they spend more than the regular user).

Yeah, this has been asked before and it's a question a newbie might not readily understand if they didn't know about merit sources and how they get their sMerits to give out.  Nor would it be easy to find the last thread in which this question was asked (at least not for me).

As an aside, I'm a merit source and have been doing a profoundly lousy job as of late.  I haven't been feeling all that well, haven't been doing much reading or posting.  Some of the troll posse might find that a refreshing change, but I assure you that I'll be back on my feet showering the noobs with merits as soon as I'm myself again.  I'm a firm believer in the merit system and try to take my job as a source seriously--it's just so damn hard to find low-ranked members making merit-worthy posts.  That's always been the problem for me, because I have high standards and refuse to lower them.  But I'm going to try to be more generous from now on, as I'm accumulating sMerits and want to rid myself of them.

When users get Banned.
When users are not active.
This wouldn't lead to a scarcity of merits(Smerits), even though ordinary members(who aren't M.sources) get banned, go inactive or even decide to keep a firm grip of their Smerits, there are more than enough merit sources with more than enough Smerits to keep the merit system alive and "running"
And to think that merit sources are updated, to a certain degree frequently, if probably one or a few of them go totally inactive or gets banned, they would be replaced.

So actually good posters have nothing to worry about in terms of who's gonna hand out merits to them, the forum has taking good care of that, it's down to you(us) to do our own part(through good, quality posts).

You don't need to worry about running out of sMerit. It won't run out, spin and keep spinning.

You can take a little time to read, for you not to worry about sMerit.
The same thing has been discussed here.

I guess it isn't limited as Merit sources are here to generate new sMerits to good and quality posters, I guess they received a corresponding merits every month. And by the way you can help generating it also if you will not hold the sMerits you have on you, find some good post you think worthy to be merited so that cycle keeps on going, there's no guarantee of holding sMerits.

In future there maybe no sMerits?
as long as there is at least one active Merit Source, sMerit will still also be around
if you say limited, you could say that but definitely not scarce
I would say limited because it originates from Merit Source that has limited amount /month

This are they: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=topusersat ?
you're looking at the wrong stats, you should look at:
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=topsend
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=topsendat
if a user can constantly send a lot more than he has received, most likely he is a merit source

Wrong point. There is official stats, so you don't have to guess. There are actually limited merit sources: There are 130 merit sources with a total merit generation of up to 20895 sMerit per 30 days; and those souces are not able to generate sMerits themselves. In reality, they are allocated different fixed numbers of sMerits for each 30 days. It means there are different total sMerits allocation for merit sources. Generally, despite of sMerit circulation in the forum, from merit sources, from normal users, sMerits are limited, obviously. Fortunately, if you are good users, they will find you some day.

People like me are always waiting for people like you.  Cheesy

Even if newbies merit related posts are worthy then mostly it is already discussed. Just like this one.

it's just so damn hard to find low-ranked members making merit-worthy posts.

No lie here, I spend most of my time reading their post as just few months ago i was once like them but the problem is, this set of lower ranked users aren't bringing in anything that new to the table. During my time you see users like s_therapist (although account has been linked as alt) taking time to explain Trust system, most self-made snr members now were in my set as of early this year and each member had something interesting to discuss making the boards they were contributing to living.

Right now most lower ranked users are only getting meriting for trying which is kinda ok as they're not spamming like others. They make it seem like there's nothing new to discuss making the work of a merit source boring in regards to reading their replies maybe that's why a little more attention have been going the way of higher ranked users lately.

Smerits are not unlimited even a merit source will have only few smerits allocated for them to spend monthly and if they can't see any quality posts to give merits then the smerits will stay in the users account. This has been discuss also with theymos planning to decay smerits so it will not give a user to hoard smerits. For now, there ain't no rules for decaying smerits so some users can hoard them as much as they want or as long as they have not met any quality posts to spend the smerits.

There is a chance though of some Merit Sources sMerits getting “burned” so as to say. A Merit Source has a maximum allocated number of merits per month, and that is the upper limit of the Merit Source’s sMerit counter at any moment (not including personal sMerits).

Say for example that a given Merit Source’s quota is of 100 sMerits per 30 days, and for whatever reason he does not spend them at all during the month. 30 days later, when the replenishment starts, that Merit Source will not receive any additional Merit Source sMerits, since he already has his quota up to the rim. At least I think it’s how it works.

I'm a merit source, and I put together this description of the system about a year ago -
https://talkmerit.com/the-source/index.php/articles/the-bitcoin-talk-merit-system
It's probably still relevant in the main, but maybe I should review it. As has been stated, it's become quite difficult to find good post in topics that interest me, and I should probably broaden my range. I gave up trying to start projects for members to gain merits as I didn't seem to get much support. If there is still some interest in English language improvement, then I might try to revive the Fit to Talk English project.

Correct. The only slight correction I would say is that although your sMerit is replenished 30 days after spending, the replenishment doesn't really "start" - it is a constantly ongoing process.

The way I always think of it, rather than saying a source receives 100 sMerits (for example) every 30 days with the proviso that they cannot replenish over their maximum, is to say that a source has exactly 100 sMerits, and each sMerit has a 30-day cooldown timer on it after it has been spent. Makes it more intuitive to understand that a sMerit which hasn't been spent can't be replenished.

I sometimes give a couple of merits to a poster who seems to have a responsible approach to merits. This gives him an extra merit to help maintain the system. Failure to do this means that "unspent" merits will not be replaced until I spend them, and this slows down the system.

Yes, that’s how it really works. I didn’t want to complicate the explanation by breaking it down into the daily replenishment procedure, but rather emphasize the fact that sMerit does not stock-up over the allowance limit.

That is why there are Merit Sources, to pump new merits into the System: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=sources
In addition to DdmrDdmr's quote above why there is a merit sources to send or pump new merits into the system or to the merit sources where merit sources are the one who will send the new merits to merit worthy forum users who really deserved getting the merit that all of us can could be able to earn it.

There are 130 merit sources with a total merit generation of up to 20895 sMerit per 30 days
The reason why there are so many merit sources is because it will be very hard to earn merits especially if the merit source is very strict on his/her criteria for the post he/she wanted before you'll get your merit so, if there are 130 merit sources then there will be different criteria that you can actually meet the requirements. Another reason why there are 130 merit sources is to make the merit distribution faster than having one merit source.
