Bitcoin ATM Operators in Nevada Requires License to Operate

Totally does not surprise me--and based on the replies here, it's not coming as much of a shock to anyone else. 

I mean seriously, does anyone really think the government is going to allow just anyone to operate a currency exchange ATM without having to jump through their regulatory hoops?  Not going to happen.  Christ, you can't even cut hair for a living without having to have a license with whatever state you're living in.  They regulate everything.

And as time goes on, you should expect more of it to come.

More regulation or more ATMs?  I'm kind of expecting more crypto regulation and am actually surprised the IRS and all the other government agencies haven't jumped in to regulate crypto to death already.  I'm not so sure about bitcoin ATMs taking off.  I think they're a great idea and they'd allow people to buy bitcoin without having to do it on an exchange like Coinbase, but I just don't think they're ever going to become very popular (unless bitcoin gets adopted as a currency instead of as an investment).

We are not yet in an era where everything goes decentralized. We are still living under the rules of our govt, so, if you want to run business, you have to comply with all the local rules. Govt of course will ask for having license since the rules say so.
There's nothing wrong with that. It's usual. May be someday with no central govt, you can get a society where you can do business without a license

There's nothing wrong with that. It's usual. May be someday with no central govt, you can get a society where you can do business without a license 

Its better if they obey the rules because they can come up into some sort of trouble if they continue without even thinking the things that might happen. "someday" it will take a lot of time but if they really wanted it to happen then they will wait patiently. They also need to respect the governments decision because its possible that they are going to bring up some issue about it to make people think that its not good for them or its not beneficial.

This is actually lighter than I expected. Since the business would have to take fiat from somewhere the state obviously would want to know how it's operated to ensure it's not used for anything "nefarious". Hence the license.

As many has pointed out, it's a business. Heck, even heard of some kids got their lemonade stand taken away from them for not keeping proper temperature control. Regulation is what government does. 

Sounds pretty valid circular by NFID. I mean this will at least ensure that ATM those are being installed are not forged and you can do the transactions with full confidence. That will be ensured by NFID authority before issuing any certificate to them.

Of course if someone create a business or project they need to get licensed or permit to the government so they can operate without having a problem. I think it's good to get license first before they operate because we know bitcoin is legit so we need also do all process that they need.  Also people can trust to one business if they permit or even a license.

US State of Nevada Financial Institutions Division has recently issued a statement concerning the need for the protection of the general interest in view of the increasing adoption of blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies.

The regulator's statement implies that even Bitcoin ATM operators are required to get their licenses before they can legally operate.

According to the NFID,

"Any entity that facilitates the transmission of or holds fiat or digital currency by way of brick-and-mortar,
kiosk, mobile, internet or any other means, should contact the NFID to request a licensure determination."

This is not an unusual news. You try to put up a business under the bright eyes of the government, you will be asked about compliance. And if you are planning to stick to it, you've got no other option but to submit to their policies, all in the name of public protection and of the general interest.

All you can do is murmur and whine silently not so much because of what they are asking from you but because of the ever-handy protection of the general interest overused by the government.

Agree to this, every business needs license to operate. The good part of this that the people that are using the bitcoin will have an easy way to converting the bitcoin into fiat, and also it can make the public interest to invest in bitcoin because if you will see that kind of machine in pubic I am sure that will take a time to look at it or even search on what that's about. it is good for bitcoin community to have that kind of technology.

Well, I really doubt people would trust BTC ATM's when the said operator is an unlicensed one. For the sake of the safety of users of BTC, and for those that are still uninvolved to trust BTC and believe that they can get into it as well, regulations should be applied towards those transactions where a middleman is involved. Besides, without those licenses, scammers would enter the scene and it would basically render the usage of ATMs as useless. Not saying that all things involved in BTC should be regulated, but some should be strictly regulated to prevent problems from arising and help the community develop better. The BTC community shouldn't be run or controlled by the government but should rather cooperate and build a lasting community instead.

Of course, when doing business whether cryptocurrency related or not offline or online there is a need for a license. Heck, even a small convenience store selling small items must file the necessary permits and must comply with required documents to do business especially under the area where one is operating. Now, how much for an operator of a Bitcoin ATM which involves money and cryptocurrency? We should not be expecting special treatment and at the same time we should discourage the regulating offices not to make things burdensome. Doing business anywhere means we have to follow the laws of the land as many of the regulations in place are there to protect the interest of the consuming public, generally speaking. Personally, I am not for a market that is totally unregulated because that can be the breeding ground of abuses, scams and exploitation so there is really that need to balance things out.

This is a common thing, because each and everything has got certain procedure to be followed while we implement. Even the normal ATM needs to fulfill this, and here bitcoin ATM is not an exception. Maybe in few countries this might not be an issue. State of Nevada might have got certain regulations for the implementation. In my country if government norms weren't fulfilled government will seize the property without giving a warning.

Reality sucks but this do happen even if you do just sell out some candies and cigarretes on a sidewalk do need up some business permits here on my country.

How much more if we do talk about BTC ATM's which would involved thousand dollars of transactions? As long on where government can sip out taxes according to their
likes its no surprise that they would regulate everything.
