But Namecoin was the 1st Alt..Interesting! I recently did a search of eBay logs, looking for the first storage items to show up ..a ton of feathercoin stuff. Do you know if  this coin was really popular back in 2013 and if so why?

It's just unfortunate that namecoin did not grow like Bitcoin, this proved that even with the current status of bitcoin now, there's a chance that it will be replace by other coin in the future.

Because namecoin and Bitcoin are far different, and maybe there are some people found much better/alternative than services or what can do of namecoin compare to Bitcoin. And namecoin, stated on their website, their project is experimental open-sourced technology, so there are high possibilities that they will not grow.
