How do you actually find messages that were deleted?

Every time I look at one of those ban appeal threads, I see that some members are able to retrieve old posts, usually to prove cases of plagiarism.
I've often wondered how it's possible to retrieve these messages, because I've tried to use multiple services, usually without any luck.

web.archive.org - Usually doesn't have all the pages indexed
Archive.is - Doesn't have all the topics/pages indexed
Google Cache - Doesn't offer a history feature, but this sometimes does bring up deleted posts

Am I missing something really obvious here? Or is there already a thread that explains how people are able to retrieve these old, deleted messages?

One of the reasons this thread exists is to keep better track of plagiarists even after the offending posts have been deleted.

Still, I'm curious if there are other ways to find deleted posts, aside from the websites I've mentioned here.
Or if it's possible to view Google Cache history perhaps?

Most of the guys uses Google to find plagiarized posts but for me it looks extremely hard to but asked some guys personally they said google is the best.

But the regular users may use their own personal scripts to find it.

Most of the time plagiarised posts aren't deleted. It's actually better to keep them as proof. Sometimes they can still be found in the report queue as well.

Yeah, Google cache sometimes works, since pages get indexed pretty slowly. Though it doesn't work for older posts.

Most of the time plagiarised posts aren't deleted. It's actually better to keep them as proof. Sometimes they can still be found in the report queue as well.

The report queue isn't publicly accessible, right? Pretty sure it isn't, just asking in case there are in fact public logs available.


Still keeping this thread up for a little while, since other people might have different effective means of getting deleted messages.

On a side note, I wonder if it's easy to set up your own archive of Bitcointalk akin to how Waybackmachine works. I reckon it wouldn't actually take up that much space (I mean everyone has a couple of TB disk space these days)

OP is asking for the way to find deleted post, not copy pasted post. Both are different in terms.
Other than archived and cached from google(hard to find), I don't think there's any other way. LoyceV has a back up though.

The message is always

Autoban user: N/A in topic #0

but the link is not accessible. Can the position of the ban notification be any clue when the post was written or what post it is?

Not really. If there is a bunch of deleted posts for a user and then autoban for the same user you can assume those events are related but that's about it.

- Will that account be permanently banned?
I meant that user fixes his/her fault before being reported.

Still the user will be banned though because posting plagiarized content is not allowed (against the forum rules). But, if the user just forgot to add the sauce and edited it a few hours later not day/days, then, it’s still acceptable. can someone correct me if am wrong

Loyce can help to retriev the deleted post or unedited post.

LOL, they will certainly be permanently banned if they only edit and add 'sauce' to their initial posts; but they might be fine if they add and edit their posts with sources.

Mods already use their own judgement on a case-by-case basis. If someone accidentally failed at quoting and corrects it on his own, I don't think that warrants a ban.

I think so, and I know plagiarism reports will be handled case by case, manually, but still don't see any official clarification about this type of plagiarism (still waited for clarifications from admins/ global moderators); in order to add that point to my thread.

There's been no policy change. redsn0w wasn't permanently banned due to several factors which made me think that permabanning him would be a net negative for the forum. Nobody is banned strictly because of "the rules"; it's always handled case-by-case, but almost always, plagiarists deserve to be permabanned.

If you think that a ban should be ended, make your case in a new topic from a "good for the forum as a whole" perspective.
