My friend deposited 1K of mintcoin into cryptsy and it never showed up there.
After making an enquiry to cryptsy their reply was "the transaction ID does not show in either our wallet or the block explorer.
You will need to investigate the source of the transaction and ensure it was sent to the correct chain"

What on earth does this mean?
How can the coins vanish nowhere, when it was sent to the address that they provided?

According to NIST and ECRYPT II, the cryptographic algorithms used in Bitcoin are expected to be strong until at least 2030. (After that, it will not be too difficult to transition to different algorithms.)
