I have a bittrex account created few years ago. I just opened it yesterday after a year and I found out that I still have 0.014 btc there. I want to withdraw it but my account was disabled for some reason and it asks me to complete identity verification.

Now the problem is I didn't use my real name when I created that account and it's not allowed to change it. Will I succeed in identity verification if I submit an ID and selfie even if my profile info is not the same on the ID?

It's really a waste for a 0.014 btc or $150 just to be stuck on there.

Err. I'm not sure, but I think you're screwed. You submitting your personal identification would be pretty pointless if it doesn't match the data on your account in the first place. Your best bet would probably be admitting that you previously registered using a wrong name, and you probably could prove ownership by providing some information: like, date of first deposit, most recent transaction, and such. I doubt that you'll be able to convince them, but it wouldn't hurt to try I guess?

I don't think the alias you originally registered will be a problem. I believe a lot of users has done also that prior to the implementation of KYC. To be sure, it is still the best to contact their support team and state your case.

I've never seen a case like this, but asking them about it can't hurt; there's a chance they'll just let you change the name on the account and you'll then be able to submit KYC documents and get the money out. They might also just tell you to buzz off and you have to provide KYC documents via the name you registered under, but you have to try. 0.014BTC's a nice sum of money for most people. Seems like they only recently started picking up on KYC unfortunately, you might've gotten away with just withdrawing without any verification a few months ago.

I believe your best solution is to contact Bittrex and ask for their instructions. You can summit a ticket here: https://bittrex.zendesk.com/hc/en-us and wait for their response. This may take a few time. Or you can open a support live chat by following these steps: https://bittrex.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360007383231-Live-Chat-24-7-365-days-a-year.

That said, a no KYC withdrawal limit of 2 BTC on Binance is a gift.

You should not play with it. It is not worth. There are high charges for forging identity. Just forget about that account and move on.

You’ll need to open a ticket with their support and query the exact procedure and time it would take to clear your situation. Other people have undergone a similar situation using either fake or mismatched names with varying experience as can be seen here: Bittrex : Name Mismatch.

"Name Mismatch" is a very famous error happened to Bittrex's KYC in late 2017 and it's a totally different case. At that time, Bittrex was still among top exchanges and very picky with KYC. They even closed for new registration for some times. Every small difference, even a dot or a comma was deemed "Name Mismatch". But then when Binance showed up and attracted users for its low fee, Bittrex saw the threat and loosely approved all the undone KYCs. My account was a typical "Name Mismatch" victim but then approved without any of my effort.

it's not allowed to change it.

Not from the user end directly but it is still possible. When users set up their profile they have this message displayed once finished

Try your luck if you really need these $150. If you explain your mistake and show your interest to be verified, I'm sure they will correct the name, especially if you will provide an ID card, etc, they will be more likely to do so

Lol. If that's actually the case then that's just borderline scamming from bittrex. A comma or a dot? seriously? I know them and Poloniex were scammy, but were they that money hungry?

Having an account registered under the name of "Snus Sweden" before KYC was really a thing or required really does not constitute identity forging later on when KYC is required. That'd really be a reach.

OP, after you verified your account and got your money out, ask them to delete your KYC data. I've read that especially if you're from europe (EU), they probably will have to adhere your request (due to GPDR (?)).
Not that i'd verify the account for 150$ in the first place, because really, Bittrex and Poloniex are untrustworthy in my book.

Chance is YES. There is a procedure for that so contact Bittrex support. If I remember correctly, KYC is not that mandatory during the time you registered, therefore, there is a possibility that random names will be used on registration.

After reading the "procedure" they will provide you, you may now decide if you still want to push it or just forget it as there are chances that you might see the procedure as hassle way.

There is a big difference between a name mismatch because someone has misspelled their name by a letter or two, and a name mismatch because you have used a completely fabricated name that does not resemble your own name in any way. In the case of the latter, I'd be very surprised if Bittrex changed the name on the account for you, since there will be no proof the account actually belongs to you and hasn't be hacked or stolen from someone else. The only way to know is to contact their support.

Having said all that, is it worth it? Exchanges are notoriously poor at keeping KYC documents safe and secure. Even the biggest exchanges aren't trustworthy in this regard. Binance was hacked for thousands of users' KYC documents, and Coinbase were actively selling client data to third parties. You'll have to decide whether or not it is worth it for you, but I wouldn't be sending my documents to a faceless stranger at a company with unknown security practices for $150.

A little bit exaggerated but it's true that my account was firstly classified "Name Mismatch" and then "Verified" after a few months I hadn't logged in. I didn't do any try to re-verify my account during that time. My name wasn't purely in Latin letters and that's the reason Bittrex didn't give a try on verify my account. Like I said, Bittrex was still among top exchanges at that time and they had reasons to be picky. But later on Binance changed the game and Bittrex had to massively verify users' accounts. However, their late moves wasn't able to stop people from moving to Binance.

Is that even possible? Will they really delete my data? I live in the South East Asia.

You'll have to decide whether or not it is worth it for you, but I wouldn't be sending my documents to a faceless stranger at a company with unknown security practices for $150.

I'm really planning to complete identity verification because I really need some money now. But if they ask more documents other than what they want on verification procedure then I won't continue.

I'm actually not so sure about that anymore. I do think they should as per the new GPDR rules for people who live in Europe, but if this is actually the case is really hard to find out for some reason..

Although even if they honor your request, they probably still keep them a bit longer for regulatory purposes, or perhaps never delete them at all, or hand copies to authorities before actually deleting your data.

People do claim they have succesfully deleted their Coinbase account - https://www.reddit.com/r/CryptoCurrency/comments/ai1s6o/is_it_possible_to_request_kyc_data_be_deleted/eeklve0/ (Albeit the process was described as "sketchy" at best, and a failure at worst.)

I also find this quite unexplainable, but that's slightly offtopic. https://www.reddit.com/r/bitcoincashSV/comments/a9icd9/bittrexcom_may_be_illegally_selling_your_kyc/

Perhaps this would be a good thing to test out; which exchanges allow your KYC data to be "Deleted". I for one would be curious for the results.

If I remember right, first you had to give only your email you hold. That was first level. Then you were asked to put in your name and that was second level.   You were asked to put in your name. Not someones else or imaginary one. Your name.  If they did not wanted your real name they would not ask for it and would be happy with a email where they can contact you.

I might have mixed bittrex with poloniex. I had and have accounts on both exchanges and I remember on one I was asked to put name.

I'd be very surprised if simply deleting your account prompted Coinbase (or any other exchange) or actually delete all the data they stored about you, including everything from KYC documents to IP address, activity, and trades.

If you live in the EU, you could put in a request under GDPR for them to delete your data, but it's anyone's guess as to whether or not they actually complied. Given stories like Coinbase illegally selling clients' data to third parties or Bitfinex and BitMEX ignoring laws forbidding them from allowing to trade in certain US states, exchanges don't really seem to care much for laws which impact their profits.

The only guaranteed way to keep your documents safe is to not distribute them across the internet.

You should be upfront about what happened. They may or may not allow you to verify your account. However if you are misleading or dishonest, chances out they will figure it out and will set off additional red flags.

Have you tried to find the answer to your question in the reviews about Bittrex Exchange? For example, https://www.trustpilot.com/review/bittrex.com. Or here - https://revain.org/exchanges/bittrex. Or you can search for more others. Some authors leave very detailed answers and maybe you will find your answear among them. I hope you succeed.

Update about this issue.
Customer support doesn't answer my question directly about using an alias on my profile and verifying with it my real info for kyc. They just keep saying the same answer that I should submit a document they require for kyc and they will verify it. Already tried 3 different ID's and no one passed. I feel they will ask for more documents if I succeed on kyc because of using an alias when I created my account. I stopped talking to them and leave my btc there.
