Greed is a common part of our life. But do you know how greed could destroy our life? Even offline and online. I will suggest to read this post about hacked 100BTC (sorry for his loss). This is happen very recently. When you will read that topic you will realize how this guy got hacked. During reply on his thread wondered to share it with newbies. So it will a lesson for every single newbie.

Actually that guy was watching porno, and there was PopUps to claim 10 BCH. And he proceed everything how hacker asked. Download file and install it and eventually ended up with hacked blockchain wallet with 100BTC. Mail verification, 2FA and second password everything he provided to scammer, otherwise it wasn't possible to hack blockchain wallet. Most likely they hack the screen. And move all bitcoin when he login his account.

First mistake was, that guy shouldn't store thses large amount of bitcoin on a web wallet. He were should use hardware wallet.

Second thing is he should not be greedy for 10 BCH (nothing real there, it was just a trap) since he have lot of money. 100BTC not a small amount.

He should not click any popups that he don't know, and probably he were not use any strong antivirus.

So, I can say "greed is destroying our life", you have seen it how.

This is the common problem among the rich people (not all). when they think money is all that matter in this world until they will developed inside their heart a desease in which no doctor can treat and that is greed.
If we don't learn how to appreciate small things in our lif we may ended up like these people. even they already have millions in their hand, they think of themselves as needy like a poor person. so when they see some opportunity like that, they hasten to grab it without thinking the consequenses. in the end they lose everything  they have been saving all this time. we need to appreciate everything we have even though we only have small things because happiness is not found on money. happpiness can be found on our ownself and that's when we are contented.

Well keeping 100 BTC on a quick access device like that is not greed but short sightedness and stupidity Cheesy That's the moral: don't be dumb. A fool and his money are soon parted.

Actually, I think his story is a joke. 100BTC is a big money and anyone who is capable of earning 100 BTC must be very smart and knowledgeable about crypto. Of course, he will know how to protect his BTC stay away from hackers.

That is certainly not always the case. Despite me having doubts about that thread, and how genuine it actually is. Many early investors in Bitcoin may have simply mined a lot back in the day, and are now returning after seeing the price of Bitcoin. They might not necessarily have good security or even be knowledgeable in that field. Plus, the more mainstream, and accepted Bitcoin becomes the more people who are not going to be very strong in the security field.

I can almost guarantee that many users who are holding onto big amounts are poorly managing their Bitcoin, and probably getting complacent like in any walk of life.

I doubt he lost 100BTC, in that topic other users find some illogicalities that suggest that this is actually a fake story, blockchain.com is not supporting SegWit, and it would be really stupid to risk 100BTC for 10 BCH.

Actually that guy was watching porno, and there was PopUps to claim 10 BCH. And he proceed everything how hacker asked. Download file and install it and eventually ended up with hacked blockchain wallet with 100BTC. And move all bitcoin when he login his account.

First mistake was, that guy shouldn't store thses large amount of bitcoin on a web wallet. He were should use hardware wallet.

From the above it is clear that neither hardware wallet would help in this case, he would probably give his seed to the hacker if requested. Unfortunately, there is no protection against human stupidity, and whether this is true or not, it shows us how easy it is to be a thief these days. You sit in your cozy armchair and someone voluntarily hands you over 100BTC Roll Eyes

I cant agree in full here. Greed is one thing, but lack of security knowledge and lack of common sense is another.
Only greed wouldn't lead to that, its combined couple things that lead to loss of BTC100!

98.49413422 BTC to be exact and i dont know on whats up to his mind why he do fall in the trap of 10 BCH offer?
Greed? Yes, but he already had enough and basing on the current price its almost 800k usd.Hackers are just lurking
anywhere and just targeting out those dumb btc holders that do easily believe into some sort of things.
If i was that person who lost almost 1BTC then i do probably banging up my head on the wall.

Indeed it's not just greed but also the idiocracy of the person. Though others claim this to be a fake story, it is still such an idiotic move for a person to just believe in pop-up promos he saw in a website stating he can claim something. He should be knowledgeable enough to know how to secure that big amount. This scenario simply just taught us to be more cautious and to avoid such stupid thing to do.

His story is probably fake when considering that the people on that thread have already pointed out several inconsistencies in his story but assuming that his story is true then the reason that hes saying he lost Bitcoin was because he saw an offer to claim 10 Bitcoin cash which is a very small amount in the first place but when you start earning money and a substantial amount that can turn into a horrible mentality that you have to take every opportunity to make money which could lead to this story from happening. If his story lined up a little more and wasn't just a troll I would believe that someone could get so greedy and neglect security for free money and this is not the first time something like this has happened so I would say although the reason he lost Bitcoin was security related by downloading software which stole his Bitcoin the fundamental reason he installed the software was out of pure greed for claiming free money so the root cause of this would have been his own greed rather than just because of poor security.

I read the thread and also all replies from page 1-2 finally found xhomerx10 reply
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5189576.msg52669228#msg52669228

That's just a fabrication and not a true story, the most obvious discrepancy is how someone who has BTC100 but does not know how to secure such a large amount (it's stupid to keep large funds in a online wallet, even though there are many reviews that the wallet is safe still that's stupid).

For me a person who has a balance of BTC100 is not an ordinary person in crypto because the way he gets it requires the skills and knowledge of crypto, examples if he gets from mining how could a miner not know that saving funds in an online wallet is something stupid, or if he gets from buying surely he is not a fool about crypto who only buys based on people's advice.

But still, even though this is a fabrication there is a lesson we can take, that is, how not to be greedy who does stupid things just because the money is not even up to 1% of what he has.

No it doesn't, it just requires to have found out about bitcoin in ~2013 or earlier. I started in 2014 and I still remember sending 100+ BTC in a single transaction from blockchain.info wallet, no 2FA or anything back in the day. So even if this particular story is not true - the 100 BTC part is not unusual at all.

It doesn’t really feel real after reading through the referenced thread in the OP. The OP in that thread goes awol just after @ xhomerx10 calls his bluff as contradictory to what blockchain TX traces show.

It’s not that it is unfeasible, I mean with a world population of 7,7 billion people I’m pretty sure there are plenty dumb enough to encounter such situation, given the right circumstances and context. This specific case though lacks an explanation as to how he came across such a large amount to begin with, normally through mining or purchase, but distils no odor in his posts as to either of these capabilities, and rather more so of an after-though entertainment after a emptying a six-pack down his throat.

Whether the story is true or not, there are still valuable lessons to be learned here as enumerated by the OP. Beginners can read this thread and will be more mindful of what they click then download and what information they should not give.

Greed really isn't the only thing to blame here, the real reason that person got robbed (assuming the story is true) is a huge amount of stupidity and lack of basic knowledge about security, or even just simple reasoning. I think majority of people in the world wouldn't click on a popup that says "claim free $1,000 here", realizing that if something is too good to be true, it must be a scam. If someone has fallen for such a simple trick, they would be likely to lose their money to all the other attacks out there, many of which are more sophisticated than that.

A lot of people (especially the newbies) always gets fooled easily by this "get rich easily" type of schemes popping out of the internet. They always see the prize or pay that comes by doing it by they don't see the scam behind it since they get blinded by the easy payout in exchange for the easy steps they will do. At the end there only lesson is having these kinds of mistakes in order for them not to try it again and again, sadly others still try. Just like what they do in HYIPs sites, some really know that this is a scam and they are happy to bring down people with them just to get that referral commission they are looking for. Well for newbies reading this you don't want to be that person being part of the scam, you should just avoid it entirely. If us in the industry won't get fooled by scams and not be part of it these kinds of illicit activities will just die down eventually.
