curious that such relative minutiae would make it in

I'd be surprised if any other sub-units of any other currencies appears in the OED, this sort of thing is more phenomenological than literary, and so would have belonged in new encyclopedias until the internet killed that model

nice , the dictionary keeps the entries forever , unlike the online version Oxford's Online Dictionary
the latter has already included all of the words like bitcoin , cryptocurrency plus blockchain and miner :

https://www.lexico.com/en/definition/blockchain for example

p.s. if you are interested in how Oxford's dictionary was created, watch The Professor and the Madman movie

Very neat, I didn't realize they didn't retire words, must be a neat thing seeing your name literally in the dictionary in reference to your work. I guess it shows were really starting to get closer and closer to being mainstream.

The popularity and awareness about this issue is constantly increasing. Satoshi's validity for a language like English is a great improvement. The world is now learning Bitcoin and Satoshi, and it is officially registered.

I cannot avoid comparing Oxford English Dictionary to some narrow-minded countries, I mean their leaders. Here is a dictionary which is open-minded about new words that come out alongside the development of the times. It seems lexicographers are earlier to acknowledge the rise of cryptocurrency than leaders to admit that there is such a thing as Bitcoin and crypto which is used and supported by their very people.

By the way, cryptocurrency is already accepted by Oxford Dictionary, but when I made this post the words cryptocurrency and its shorter version crypto are still underlined with squiggly red.  Grin

Yes its very late but its better late than never. Having satoshi placed on Oxford Dictionary is one big accomplishment for bitcoin community. If we are going to explain bitcoin and someone asks us what is satoshi and what is bitcoin does it appear in the dictionary then we can simply reply check your dictionary. I do hope the wikipedia will add satoshi in their online dictionary since what they have is bitcoin, satoshi nakamoto but not satoshi.

I was moved by this news. I didn't imagine that even Satoshi could go this far and would be recognized even by the Oxford dictionary. At least people who are clueless about Bitcoin and its history would have brief information about it through dictionaries. It will surely bring a huge impact especially for those who are curious about it.

Satoshi in Oxford English dictionary is good news for the cryptocurrency community. By the way I am personally very surprised
to read this news, it seems I do not believe bitcoin is increasingly recognized by the world. Seeing that bitcoin is increasingly widely
known, it is increasingly emphasized that bitcoin will make a new history in the world of technology.I, as a bitcoin believer, are very
confident that this news makes a small step towards the glory of bitcoin, where in the future can be legal right in all countries.
I can't wait for that moment to happen.

It's not really that late but the timing is just right and it's about time, this is the time when people are asking and will ask what and who is Satoshi and  Oxford English Dictionary has to realize that, they should update their database, in the near future some of the common words in the community, will be included like HODL, there will be a lot of words coined in Cryptocurrency that will be included in  Oxford English Dictionary.

It is nice to add this word, I don't know if wrong terms like HODLING have been added, but it seems possible especially after the inclusion of cryptocurrency.
Maybe we'll see a section for cryptocurrencies terms soon.
I hope that it is limited to BTC and does not extend to many of the reforms related to some SCAM cryptocurrencies.

Which wikipedia you're using?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitcoin#Units

That will make people who don't know can learn that word from dictionary. Simple and yes that is will give some impact in the future, maybe for our child who don't know cryptocurrency is exist.

If you know about crypto, the chance your kids know about crypto is higher. Oh, btw, I don't think you'll see Oxford as a mainstream book that everybody read.

That aside, I'm seeing cryptotalk everywhere.

This is another achievement for bitcoin, though it will not make a huge impact in my opinion since there are only few people who loves to read and use dictionary these days, we always use google nowadays. It would be more effective if big social medias like Facebook, twitter, and youtube will pop an advertisement of bitcoin on everyone's news feed and videos in facebook, every videos in youtube, and tweets in twitter, for free (too good to be true, for now)

Maybe later they will add Mbtc on the dictionary and encyclopedia sometime soon it is sure in the Urban Dictionary for quite some time now but giving it a place on Dictionary surely is a big thing for cryptocurrency and Bitcoin, Although I guess there are not many people that are using the Dictionary now and just using Google instead because of its fast and responsive answer, We can surely say that a google is now a dictionary in this sense I guess the popularity of Bitcoin will not have enough impact even if Satoshi's name would be on the Dictionary.

I was moved by this news. I didn't imagine that even Satoshi could go this far and would be recognized even by the Oxford dictionary. At least people who are clueless about Bitcoin and its history would have brief information about it through dictionaries. It will surely bring a huge impact especially for those who are curious about it.
Indeed, it still an improvement that we need to be proud of! well since bitcoin is getting adopted and accepted by different countries, I know that there are some people wondering about anything about bitcoin particularly to its developer at least now they can easily search for it. They can easily have an idea about bitcoin like newbies who wants to explore bitcoins history and even for students who's currently studying economics, as far as I know there is a certain part where they have to explain digital currency like bitcoin and its history. Good to know that they can just use dictionary which is the most common app you can find on their mobile phones.

It feels very great to know this to be honest, it makes the word satoshi feels more standard I would say, now if anybody would ask what is satoshi, you can easily say look it up on the dictionary, very impressive to see how far btc have come.

It is nice to add this word, I don't know if wrong terms like HODLING have been added, but it seems possible especially after the inclusion of cryptocurrency.
Maybe we'll see a section for cryptocurrencies terms soon.
~
Hodling hasn't been added yet. maybe in the next five years.
It took satoshi a long time, the other crypto terms that we know now could take decades for OED to list them all  Grin

First was bitcoin
Second was cryptocurreny

Now they listed "satoshi" and defined it as:
a satoshi is the smallest monetary unit in the Bitcoin cryptocurrency, and is named after Satoshi Nakamoto, the—probably pseudonymous—developer(s) of Bitcoin.

I'm not sure if there would be any impact on bitcoin's popularity but it's good that the word has been acknowledged although I think it's a bit late.

What word will be next?

Related news: https://cointelegraph.com/news/oxford-english-dictionary-adds-satoshi-bitcoins-smallest-unit

By the way, a question was posted here before How long until "satoshis'" make in into the (oxford) dictionary?, we know the answer now  Grin

I think this is an important thing for Bitcoin to increase its recognition among people all over the world. Because we all use dictionaries to search for some information that we need. Also, Oxford English Dictionary is one of the most used dictionaries in the world.

I'm glad that they're starting to recognise cryptocurrency related words more. I don't care if it's late as long as it's there. Just like what the quote says, better late than never. We need a little more time and I'm sure crypto related words would increase in the Oxford dictionary. I see it as an achievement of crypto.

Just remember, when you mean the coins you don't use capital letter at the beginning of the word. If you say Bitcoin, you mean the whole thing, technology, network, etc, while bitcoin is the coin only. Same thing happens to satoshi, but in this case Satoshi is a person, while satoshi is a coin.

Unfortunately if the word is the first one starting a paragraph (such as this thread tittle), it always use the capital letter leading to confusion.

So the news is actually that satoshi, rather than Satoshi, got into the dictionary.

To avoid this confusion, OP should rephrase the thread title. Something like:

Word satoshi in Oxford English Dictionary

If you want to refer to the coin, which is the case here. Oh and notice how the dictionary entry correctly used small capitalization: "a satoshi", NOT a Satoshi.

^ Definitely right, OP got mislead on his thread title because the article talking about the smallest monetary unit in the Bitcoin and that "satoshi". Not a person but a tiny amount of Bitcoin. But it seems good news because we are now become the mainstream. Cryptocurrencies are now well knowing even in English dictionary. I smell something good near in the future when it comes to popularity will continuing spreading even in books and articles on websites.

Well, that is a good development for bitcoin and cryptocurrency community in general. It's good to see the Oxford dictionary is getting updated with new cryptocurrency terminologies which will also help people know more about and cryptocurrency. this is another step forward toward achieving mass adoption.

Based on the increased search only words will be added to the dictionary. Before a word gets added it'll be reviewed and further gets added. Here the explanation for the term perfectly matches with the meaning. Whether this will gain popularity, no and getting added to the Oxford English Dictionary itself a big recognition.

Popularity increaaing because Satoshi and Bitcoin are words defined in a dictionary? I guess the answer for that would be no since they are just defining a word and it doesn't really do anything besides that. What I appreciate though is something like Oxford has given recognition not only to the words Bitcoin and cryptocurrency but also the denomination for Bitcoin which for us is a delightful thing to see. But if we expect that the prices will go up because of rhis then think again this won't have any effect for the demand for BTC.

FINALLY! I have been waiting for this addition for ages. Now I can pride myself that "Satoshi" is a real sophisticated word haha
Now on a more serious note it is great to see that "Satoshi" it's becoming a real term recognised by a famous entity like Oxford. The question is now "in how much time are we going to make use of the newly added term on a daily basis?"

Time will tell us the answer, no doubt about that, but you can do your part to spread awareness about Bitcoin! Tell your inner circle about Bitcoin or organise meet-ups or make an app that introduces people to cryptocurrency. There are endless way to help the adoption of Bitcoin. You just need some will.

Dictionaries are one of the most used things by people. The listing of "satoshi" word in Oxford English Dictionary will definitely help Bitcoin's popularity increase too I think. There will be more people to learn about Bitcoin.

It's just an indication that people are starting to recognize and appreciate the importance of cryptocurrency that they're including the terms being used in the blockchain technology. I'm sure that there will be more crypto words to be added in the future which would be helpful especially for crypto beginners.

By the way, a question was posted here before How long until "satoshis'" make in into the (oxford) dictionary?, we know the answer now  Grin

It is unlikely that the appearance of the word in the dictionary will be able to popularize Bitcoin. Do you often look for new words in the dictionary to find yourself a new hobby? I think no. However, we can conclude that Bitcoin is gaining approval and respect.

Great news for Bitcoin. The addition of terms related to crypto and Bitcoins means that the crypto sphere has acquired sufficient importance for large institutions and influential people

I can't imagine it'll have any real impact. People don't look to dictionaries for deciding which investments to make.

It's a cool acknowledgement, though, and really shows how far we've come in terms of going mainstream. It's also a small victory for those hoping to see bitcoins become a legitimate unit of account.

nice , the dictionary keeps the entries forever , unlike the online version Oxford's Online Dictionary
the latter has already included all of the words like bitcoin , cryptocurrency plus blockchain and miner :

https://www.lexico.com/en/definition/blockchain for example

p.s. if you are interested in how Oxford's dictionary was created, watch The Professor and the Madman movie

Yes, the manuscript is much more valuable than the online version of the dictionary. This is a great honor for Bitcoin.

Thanks for the tip, I have not seen this movie

Of course it’s a welcoming sign, we would likely see more text book to include Satoshi and bitcoin into their syllabus, and school system would have no reason to question the reputation, and everything look positive.

It's nice, our children will have to get use to it at school, and this may provoke their thought and that of their teachers to want to learn about what is Satoshi and by doing so, they will find bitcoin. I hope I get a hard-copy of the Oxford edition.

How old are you, by the way? If by children you mean your future children, I guess they will encounter Bitcoin first before Satoshi. And for sure they will first bump into the word outside the dictionary. Most probably they won't even need the dictionary to know what Bitcoin or Satoshi is. The unborn and little children of today will certainly meet Bitcoin first not in the dictionary but in the outside world, and as a money, in their favorite ice cream shop, in the arcade, and so on. This Oxford English Dictionary listing will just be a piece of history for them.

It is nice to add this word, I don't know if wrong terms like HODLING have been added, but it seems possible especially after the inclusion of cryptocurrency.

i don't think terms such as "Hodling" could even be added to a "dictionary" since these words are more like slang rather than actual words that would be used. and dictionaries don't have slang in them as far as i know.

at least now we will have references for those who's asking about crypto related question specially about bitcoin.
now we can just let them search themselves for what is satoshi to connect into bitcoin.i dont know why it took this long before finally oxford decided to add Satoshi as a word.
Of course it’s a welcoming sign, we would likely see more text book to include Satoshi and bitcoin into their syllabus, and school system would have no reason to question the reputation, and everything look positive.
sooner mate because i heard that there are universities now that has blockchain subjects so it wont take long befoer bitcoin and cryptocurrencies will be tackled as well because it differs on that topic

First was bitcoin
Second was cryptocurrency

Now they listed "satoshi" and defined it as:
a satoshi is the smallest monetary unit in the Bitcoin cryptocurrency, and is named after Satoshi Nakamoto, the—probably pseudonymous—developer(s) of Bitcoin.

I'm not sure if there would be any impact on bitcoin's popularity but it's good that the word has been acknowledged although I think it's a bit late. What word will be next?

There is no visible and measurable impact at all especially with the current market. This can be a very good conversational piece but I don't think people are really that very interested with new words that make it to the Oxford dictionary but this is still good news to Bitcoin and Satoshi Nakamoto. Finally, the word 'satoshi" is an official word of the English language and this is actually worth some digital celebration. Now, I am adding "satoshi" to my hoard of personal dictionary in my LanguageToolPlus app. Yes, the recognition can be too late but is still better than never at all. I am not sure if HODL is already in the Oxford dictionary but in light of the popularity of Bitcoin it should be.

I don't know exactly who Satoshi Nakamoto is or where he is from or even if he is alive but I think this is a huge accomplishment to get his name published in an actual dictionary, it's sort of the same magnitude as a nobel price pretty much.

Sure the money he has made is great but in decades time his name will still be in the dictionaries while other
Millionaire fortunes might be forgotten.

Wonder what criteria they use to list these words? Is it based on some search terms? Because pretty soon we might see the words Hodl or MtGox in the dictionary.

if word such as "totes", "twerk", "Po-po" etc.. has been added to dictionary then it was only a matter of time before they put bitcoin in dictionary which is more than deserving than the three.

also it is not too late, bitcoin is still young and we may think it is popular but it is only in our community. bitcoin being put in dictionary will help it's popularity. the effect may not be immediate but
it will have an effect in the long run

Having it listed is not enough. They need to hear it often to trigger their curiosity to research more about bitcoin's background, satoshi and Satoshi Nakamoto, and evetually the whole crypto-space terms and ideology. But still, it's good to see that even them recognizes its existence and not just having bitcoin in their dictionaries. Soon, when popularity increases, traditional fiat money would decrease usage, and people would start looking to digital ways of payment, then comes the time more articles and online resources would enlist cryptocurrency-related terminologies.

nice , the dictionary keeps the entries forever , unlike the online version Oxford's Online Dictionary
the latter has already included all of the words like bitcoin , cryptocurrency plus blockchain and miner :

https://www.lexico.com/en/definition/blockchain for example

p.s. if you are interested in how Oxford's dictionary was created, watch The Professor and the Madman movie

That was one terrible movie in all sense

It is a predictable thing. Cryptocurrency has become a bit popular and recognizable, so it is naturally that defines of such things appear more and more. Mentioning about Satoshi, Bitcoin, cryptocurrency and so on I met in different dictionaries, not only in the Oxford Dictionary. And it is great, I think. It means that people are searching the information about this direction and such kind of definitions are demanded.
For example from some of online dictionaries, when you try to find some information about satoshi, this one appeares - "It was founded in 2008 by this anonymous programmer using a pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto".
May be not always the information or interpreting of information is precise, but some time ago it was hard to find even this in the Internet. To my mind very soon even more definitions will appear.

Fascinating to find an earlier iteration of the word "cryptocurrency" being cited in the OED notes ...

" 2009   @hxn 23 Sept. in twitter.com (O.E.D. Archive)    This is really interesting: bitcoin, the p2p cryptocurrency. "

See thread: Re: Who coined the word "cryptocurrency" ...

...

Am pretty sure it was Satoshi himself. There's a passage in Digital Gold by Nathaniel Popper where it's proposed in an exchange with that Finnish fella who helped him out with bitcoin.org at the start. I'll dig around.

Edit - It was an unknown stranger.

'While satoshi never discussed anything person in these emails, he would banter with Martti about little things.

In one email Satoshi pointed to a recent exchange on the Bitcoin email list in which a user referred to Bitcoin as a "cryptocurrency" referring to the cryptographic functions that made it run.

"Maybe it's a word we should use when describing Bitcoin. Do you like it?" Satoshi asked.

"It sounds good," Martti replied. "A peer to peer cryptocurrency could be the slogan."  '

...

No reference to "cryptocurrency" ...

To some extent, it actually has an impact on the community because they tend to be at peace more with something that is recognized worldwide, and something they can even make reference to when discussing with the people involved. Wherever satoshi is now, I am sure he will be so glad to know that his name is being made reference to already which I am also sure that very soon, institutions will also start teaching with the name in class and they will always refer to him as cryptocurrency guru.

The happiest moment will be the recognition he will get when the government eventually recognizes cryptocurrency and decide to give it a chance to be spent by the entire citizens of the world, so I see it as a good news to some certain extent really.

That's great! We're getting more and more better news and update about cryptocurrency and bitcoin. It's a good sign that we're getting more people's attention through time. And now, I'm looking forward for more crypto/bitcoin related words being defined by Oxford Dictionary in the future.
But I'm curious if does 'blockchain' already become a part of Oxford Dictionary?

This is normal because every year all reliable dictionaries and encyclopedias are always updating in which they will include all new words and discoveries to make their enterprise to become more salable in which this includes the Bitcoin and its related names because it is becoming more known and famous around the globe. Soon all the people in the world will know what is Bitcoin is.

Yes, Blockchain is listed already on lexico.com which is powered by oxford
Reference: https://www.lexico.com/en/definition/blockchain

But the thing is I can't search the satoshi on every dictionary. I don't know why. Even on many famous dictionaries like Meriam Webster dictionary.

edit: found the satoshi in oxford dictionary

I mean every year they have their process of updating their dictionary to include words that has caught the attention of the masses in the last year of so. So definitely adding 'satoshi', is already a big win for crypto enthusiast around the world.

We have been using that term for a long time, since bitcoin's inception and it's just about time that it is added in dictionaries, so that those who are not away of it will be familiarised and it could bring more people into the ecosystem because of this, who knows.

I think somewhere this step of Oxford will be very helpful for Bitcoin to increase its trust between new crypto community and those who are still not aware about cryptocurrency anyway it was late decision but at least they have done it and I appreciate it.

I think it would not affect a huge large of impact to bitcoin because we live on a technology now.  Unless the teacher would discuss something about bitcoin and it could have an impact to the future bitcoin.  There are some people who uses dictionary but they not read all the books at all and curious by some word of satoshi.

I agree that update of dictionaries are usual and they have to include new words to be actual and updated. This is not made especialy because of Satoshi or Bitcoin.

This is late but this is still good news. It may not affect bitcoin price but having been listed in Oxford dictionary means recognition. Expect the other dictionaries too follow soon. This is normal because bitcoin will slowly becoming mainstream. Many are saying it is a bubble and will die soon. Now bitcoin is once again at $9,000.

English language is really dynamic, new words keeps adding up to the old vocabularies we know already. Adding a common word like Satoshi which is usually used in discussions involving cryptocurrencies especially bitcoin is a great addition. I hope more words would be added to help promote cryptocurrencies across the globe.

When was this added? And does anyone have the exact dates of Bitcoin and crypto-currency when they where added. I'll bet 0.01 BTC that it was right after or during the meteoric rise to 20k.

It's interesting, showcases some form of adoption but the English dictionary accepts a bunch of words and popular slang has even been added to the dictonary.

Please stop saying this will affect prices, being listed in a dictionary isn't going to make people want to buy Bitcoin more, it's just a cool thing.
