A reported loss of 4 bitcoin on Lightning Network has been blamed on either user-negligence or FUD-spreading. Community members variously described the user as ‘an idiot’ and ‘in over his head’, if the loss really occurred at all.

It's all just gossip unless someone cares to share some actual evidence.  It's certainly possible to lose funds by spending from an outdated channel state, but, beyond that, there's not much point arguing over whether it did or didn't happen.  It's considered a feature that the information is seen only by the parties involved and it's not visible to prying eyes.

Do you think the whole thing was made up to spread FUD?

I am more inclined to believe that this was just made up with the attention of getting the limelight from the Bitcoin community in Reddit. And it is very easy to do it these days. Just pretend that you have a good story and attract the attention of some influential social media people and them boom you have a story having a life of its own. Otherwise, losing 4 Bitcoin that easily can be a sign of mental instability, I mean it is not normal that you carelessly do something that has risk of you losing very valuable digital asset.

I have read some of the posts from the Reddit link @Khaos77 has given and the actual poster himself admits that it is his fault and has some suggestions.

Basically it's caused by my own mistake, because of the server power fail... I though that with my file backups I'm really safe... already have some suggestions to improve the system:~snip

~I'm just a naive person to trust that technology so much, it's my own fault. Btw they are doing a great job, coding as much as they can.

At least he is still positive with regards to the technology, which is Bitcoin, and knowing that there are still bugs to fix in it.

The Bitcoin Expert - Luke Dashjr (based on the badge that he has) is actively replying to the post and he said that ZipoTim is trying to claim an old state on the network, making other coins to be his if I understood correctly, ended up the other way around losing all his coins with it.

In the end, at least that ZipoTim admitted his fault, probably has a lot of coins because of his calmness during that event. Still clinging into hope it seems.
