Hardware wallet for altcoins

Most of the hardware wallets out there have limited support for altcoins. Especially if you are looking for holding a shitcoin, you will have no hardware wallet to hold. Please, don't say without bitcoin, every coin is a shitcoin. I know what I'm talking about.
Which hardware wallet supports the most altcoins? I am aware of Ledger and Trezor. What are some other hardware wallets which I can check out?
On ledger, I can see certain cryptos are not supported on Ledger Live. What does that mean even?

"Ledger live" is what they call the official app (GUI) you have to install on your PC or phone so you can interact with your ledger device (manage accounts, sign messages, voting ...)
I think it only means that if you need to manage these cryptos you will have to use some 3rd party app ... (like myetherwallet).

As of others check also prokey or keepkey.

No, your private-keys will never leave the device, which is the entire point of a hardware wallet.

All that MyEtherWallet or other wallets will do is ask Ledger to sign a transaction, and then you can say yes or no. The unsigned tx will be sent to the device, signed and sent back to be broadcasted.

As long as you check the tx being signed, you should be able to use any wallet.

Yea, I mention those two just as FYI. In fact Ledger or Trezor is the best choice.

I have Ledger nano S.  The only thing that i was not expecting is limited capacity.
It means the device can handle max up to 3-4 coins simultaneously. If you want new coin you need to replace (reinstall) one of them.
Funds are safe but this reinstall takes time to synchronize, add accounts ... it's just annoying doing this often.
So if you plan to actively managing, spending more assets better go with the X version.

As TryNinja explained, the Private Key will remain in the Hardware Wallet even if it connected to a third-party application such as Electrum or MyEtherWallet. For example, when I connect Nano X and Trezor T to Electrum, the option to export the private key is disabled:

Probably because each coin has its own wallet and Ledger wallet has difficulties choosing the right one, you need probably check it one by one.

Concerning using 3rd party apps/websites with Ledger hardware wallets, you should be safe just like how other have mentioned. You just need to be wary of services of the more sort of "bizarre" coins. There have been cases where you'd make a transaction and send 100 XYZ token through the web GUI, but then look at the verification on your Ledger and see that the funds it's trying to send is 1,000 XYZ tokens, and to a different address that you're trying to send.

tldr; always check the amount/address verification on the device itself.

Those all just third-party applications; Ledger live, Myetherwallet, and Metamask (I mean HW isn't have limited). The hardware wallet (HW) only keeps your private key and your private key is just for sign the transaction. You can connect to another wallet application that supports the coin you want.

I've used my Ledger Nano S, connected to MEW, with tokens that (afaik) weren't listed on Ledger Live (I cannot stand that wallet and I avoid it). All I had to do was to enable tokens in the ETH app.
I don't know, at least the open source HW could be investigated by the coin developers and maybe try to implement themselves that apps/addons for their coins? (Is that possible?) It could be quite an advertising for the coins too...

With Ledger Nano S and Electrum I can easily sign a message. So the problem is not the HW.

Yes, I know about that. The problem is not with the Hardware Wallet. Ledger Nano can sign and verify messages on Electrum. But there is no feature to sign or verify a message in "Ledger Live". I slightly corrected this statement:

It’s pretty sad that they haven’t got to implement this for Ledger Live users, specially considering that you could do it with the prior software topology, and that there is a long standing petition on their github for its implementation:

In the above thread, Gre, who claims works at LedgerHQ, commented in 2019 that "We're definitely considering the feature. no ETA yet however."

Maybe that github thread should get flooded with loads of comments demanding the feature.

Most hardware wallets just list bunch of worthless tokens to pump their numbers for supported coins.
Ledger supports 1250+ coin, Trezor supports around 1631 coins, Bitbox supports 1500+, etc.

Ledger Live is native application made by Ledger but you can use those non-supported coins with other wallets, for example Monero works only with their wallets like Monero CLI, Monero GUI, Monerujo and Feather wallet.
You can even use Ledger wallet with Electrum wallet for Bitcoin, and not even use Ledger Live app at all.

That means all those apps are developed by cryptos developers but not Ledger team itself. The Ledger team responsivity for them is constrained to the  part of those apps that deals with their installation on Ledger HW. Those apps are able to communicate with dedicated software wallets rather with Ledger Live.

not on Ledger Live: the cryptocurrency project team only implemented Ledger hardware wallet support on their website/wallet software
