I am going to keep update the thread in next 2 months to see which sort of changes of merit distributions from merit sources (especially when bias-effects from the Art contest cool down - after the vote, after congratulations.
ABSTRACT- The forum users distributed 8659 merits more what they usually did in most of half previous weeks at 4521 (the median of weekly merits).
- There is nearly 292% increase in the total merits last week, compares to median of weekly merits (before 2019w46) at 4521.
We all know that theymos sent thousands of merits in his merit sprees. From my discussion with @fillippone, I ask myself that are there any significant effects from increased reallocation of merits to merit sources? In my Merit source observations, you can see despite of decrease in total merit sources (from 130 to 90 then increased to 98), the total merits per 30 days rose (from 20895 to 21671). . list id day month2 year date meritsource smerit, abb(30)

I scrap data from total merits theymos sent in the last week (only last week) in the 10th anniversary Art contest. He sent 9413 merits in total, from 18/11/2019 to 22/11/2019, forum time; but I stop counting his sent merits after November 22, 2019, 09:37:48 PM ( when he locked that thread). . list summerits date totalmerits, abb(30)

Those days fit well in the period of the last week, 2019w46, that has 14251 merits distributed in total (see in the 3 rd in column of weeklyrank. The 2019w46 is from 12/11/ to 18/11/2019,, in GMT time (not forum time). So there is a little lag (hours) between two datasets. A raw caculation from merits (with all possible effects from Art contest - excludes theymos' sent-merits, new merit sources, newly increased sMerits allocation, and the others), we have: Unbelievable! It means that the forum community were extremely active last week in the way they use their merits. They sent 8659 merits more than they usually did in previous weeks (at 4521, the weekly median).

All sources had their source Merit adjusted and thus reset to the full amount. I'm aiming to empty mine in 30 days, so long term I expect my monthly distribution to increase by about 400 now. |

All sources had their source Merit adjusted and thus reset to the full amount. I'm aiming to empty mine in 30 days, so long term I expect my monthly distribution to increase by about 400 now.
It makes sense, with each 175% increase of each source's merit allocation, in the long run, merit distribution weekly will do increase as well. Let's look at the past week, what happened? After excluding theymos' effects, we have 291% increase compares to the median of weekly merits (before 2019w46) at 4521. . di (14251-1071)/4521*100

As being said, after the bias-effects from theymos and the Art contest cool down, I expect the figure will be somewhere closely to the increases of merit allocation for each source (compares to 4521). Nevertheless, I have a big curious question for myself: Will luckily ranked-up users with generous supports from the Art contest perform well in coming months? From my observations, most of them stucked for months (with very very little earned merits - that somehow represents their post quality and contributions) and I believe their post quality will probably not change too much in coming months. I also hope that all merit sources will maintain their strict rules when giving merits away. The forum does not need a new-era shitposters who will destroy what merit system and our community built up well so far.

No, you misunderstood my opinion. What I mentioned is I hope merit sources will maintain their strict rules as same as before their reallocation of monthly merits. For the Art contest, yes, it is for fun, and I am fine with it. There is nothing wrong when you send 20 or 50 merits to the arts you like (even if you do it today). I knew there are some shady behavious and ones took advantage of the contest to do what they waited for around two years since merit sytem began. As I said, I am fine with it and just let it be what it be. Then, when the Art contest effects cool down, they will be stucked again (if they have not yet promoted to Legendaries). how long till the investigators are in tying up farms/rings of accounts..
As TMAN wrote, they will do stupid things again. Like what we saw when the enhanced merit system activated in September of 2018. They nearly got mad in the first week since the changes came. I think this is the challenge for the new MS (myself included). What we saw in this round is a massive reallocation from "inactive MS" to new "active" MS. Even if MS number was reduced and also global sMerit allowance was marginally inflated, overall, I do expect merits circulation will increase a lot. theymos made now clear that wants all the merit allowance to be depleted, and I think the future "rebalance" of sMerits allowance will consider the amount of sMerits spent. This pose a challenge for merit source, deplete their sMerit source monthly allowance (that should be the easy part) without promoting shitposting, or below par contributions (this is going to be the hard part). Attaining this double objective will allow each individual MS to increase her sMerit allowance in a future revision by theymos (who made clear that some sort of adjustment will be done in the future considering the sMerits sent in the recent months), and at the same time do what a good MS should do: trying to promote good posting on the forum. |

I'm not very good at stats analysis, so I would like to ask - how Merit distribution last week looks compared with first weeks after realease of Merit system (January 2018)? Because I can't remember when I saw such big number of merits distributed just in one week and I suppose these numbers are close (or even bigger) to most active weeks when merit system just been released.

ABSTRACT- It seems the effects from the Art contest has gradually cooled down.
- Compare to 4521 (the median of weekly merits on 2019w46), the percentages of last week merits (after excluding merits distributed by theymos) is 106.7%, while the figure two weeks ago is 291.5%.
- Good news is it seems the re-allocation of sMerits for merit sources still shown good effects.
- Total distributed merits: 17685 (see)
- Total merits sent by theymos: 8341 (= 9413-1072, see)
- Median of weekly merits before the 2019w46 (when theymos began to dump massive merits): 4521
A raw caculation from merits (with all possible effects from Art contest - excludes theymos' sent-merits, new merit sources, newly increased sMerits allocation, and the others), we have: What does it means, guys? It means that the forum community were extremely active last week in the way they use their merits. They sent 9344 merits more than they usually did in previous weeks (at 4521, the weekly median). I believe that the effects from the Art Contest cooled down within the last week (2019w47), even total's theymos dumped merits concentrated in the last week (8341/9413 ~ 88.6% - only in the 10th Art contest thread). I believe that there is a real cool down but there are some other reasons: such as merit sources overused their sMerits in the Art-related threads and now have still waited their sMerits to be filled again, whilst normal users have to earn new merits themselves in order to have more sMerits to give away. I believe that that is a solid proof of the disappearance of Art contest's effects (after 4 weeks). One of two purposes for the thread has been demonstrated.
The last purpose is observe the effects from reallocation of 30-days sMerits to merit sources. I am going to keep observing it next one month.

I am really surprised about this pull to the long term average.
I thought one of the most relevant effect of the new sources were the reallocation from inactive to active merit sources.
I timely depleted my allowance, maybe others with bigger ones actually struggled a little bit. I don’t know.

Merit sources probably overused their smerits within the art contest so they have to wait for their next sMerit allocations. 30 days to refresh for amount of sMerits they sent. I expect they will become reactively give sMerits away next one or two weeks. Normal users probably have faced nearly same problems, and they have to earn new merits to have newly free sMerits.
Next one month, we might have a better overview on growths of those 28 users (who earned hundreds of merits within the Art contest and jumped to the top recently merited users) Percentages of recent earned per total merits of artists in top-50-merited usersI am going to give you the update next three weeks. |

I think we need to wait at least until next Friday to get a proper reading of this. Merit Source redistribution and reassignment took place on the 14/11/2019 (perhaps a day before, but I captured my screen shot on the referenced date). 30 days later is when the Merit allowances get replenished (same rate as date-30 days sMerit expenditure), so that process is taking place now, and last week’s reading (as of Friday 13/12/2019) caught the allowances at the end of their cycle, without the replenishing effect taking place yet. Additionally, the coming xMas period may have some effect either way in the coming weeks (more time available or less time depending on how each one deals with out of routine time). |

It seems that we saw the effects from merit sources again when their sMerits refilled after 30 days but the 14.7% increase is not impressive, in my opinion, compared to the median of weekly merits 5 weeks ago, and compared to the percentage of increases in monthly sMerits for each merit sources.
I predict that there will be more increases for 2019w51 (with the coming Friday-data dump), when more sMerits refilled and effects from the Christmas and New year!
