Huge.

Going to get some media contacts aware of it soon, so hopefully we'll be seeing it all over the news here.

I don't see the value in deploying so many Bitcoin ATMs in one city unless there's a lot of demand for it. There's one close to where I live but they charge a hefty premium to convert fiat to bitcoin. I read somewhere that there was a guy standing near the ATM offering to sell bitcoins cheaper than the ATMs price.

Tons of migrant workers are in dubai. If they could use ATM to transfer money home then it can really work.

There needs to be an ATM on the other end.

This looks pretty awesome I think we should stick to Bitcoin atm though, maybe Litecoin, but certainly not Dogecoin, its just another one of those coins like the ones that popped up back in April.

I think this is pretty awesome news. There is a lot of untapped potential from the Middle East. In particular, Dubai has pockets of concentrated wealth intermingled with pockets of migrant workers so it's a great place to gain adoption. Plus, you gotta love a city with a mall that has it's own ski resort!

This is a great thing for Bitcoin.

Your post led me to try to find Arabic sites that mention bitcoin. Turns out that bitcoin has been featured on many of the large media outlets there. Also, I found that most of the Arabic forums that have people posting about bitcoin are Egyptian and Saudi. Mostly Egyptians though.

I've yet to see a single shred of evidence this is true aside from that tweet.

Searching for bitcoin dubai mostly brings up stuff about a pizza joint and that reddit post.

Check this out   http://www.bitcoinlayman.com/dubai-launch-400-bitcoin-atms-2-weeks/   Looks like somebody has more images than just the tweet.  The first dollar of oil money that goes into bitcoin is going to set spark to the mountains of debt used to fund the excess of fiat in the past 5000 years.  What I don't think will happen is an all out switch to settlement in btc.  OPEC could just as easily credit a coin that is a derivative of the oil reserves they have, collecting the present value bases in exchange for the backing of oil.  Snap just like that, new world reserve currency leveraging any and all other asset classes at will.  This news was sorta a shock when I saw it and still not quiet sure how I feel about this.

This is great, I hope they have one in each terminal at the airport. The last time I was there I had to pay to get USD out of the ATM and then pay to convert those USD to AED (helps to have cash to pay for a cab from Terminal 2 to Terminal 1).

I really hope this ATM can do Dogecoin. Would give a good push to Dogecoin. Dubai people are great Shibes and love DOGE.

If ATM can do no DOGE, I will start campaign to update firmware to support Dogecoin.

This is really important, everybody help. We can do more like: www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/03/18/dogecoin-donation_n_4987224.html

You guys do realize that dogs are not very popular in the Arab world right? The word "dog" is even used as a pejorative. Calling someone a dog is actually the most common way to make an insult in the Muslim world.

A good beginning.  Grin
The next steps will be:
- identification by the ATM only with Namecoin ID
- selling oil directly for Bitcoin and Namecoin

Oh gawd, I hope not. At least not yet.

Saddaam Hussein announced he'd accept currencies other than USD for his oil. Days later, the bombs started falling.

Moammar Quaddafi announced he'd accept currencies other than USD for his oil. Days later, the bombs started dropping.

Some day, perhaps. But crypto needs to become way more mainstream before invoking the real wrath of TPTB.

Anyone with a campaign ad in their signature -- for an organization with which they are not otherwise affiliated -- is automatically deducted credibility points.

I did not see this question addressed:

Will the ATMs buy & sell BTC anonymously?

For me that is the important question.

If so, then Dubai is about to become a very popular place to visit!

Nice gold market too.

***

No deals for 18 kt gold down here in Peru (on a visit), a (net) premium of about 35% over spot for simple gold jewelry, which is, of course, better than the USA, but I was hoping for a better deal.

Gold Eagles, then, when I get back!
