What is difference between 2 edit button?

I see two edit buttons after replying to a topic or creating a topic. What is the difference between these two buttons? Do they have any difference work? Or just one by fonts and another one by image?

The big one opens the normal edit/post page with the bbcode editor.
The bottom one shows the edit box on the same page.

The first button is intended for expanded editing, and the second for instant editing without leaving the page.
