For now they do not expire, but in the future they may, that's why you are adviced not to hoard them, but to give them out to other users, so that ranking up process never halts.

This is a quote to the message you see when you are about meriting a user, and this is exactly what theymos(admin)says about hoarding sendable merits and on if they can actually be decayed/expire.

Meaning that since January 25th, 2018, when the merit system was launched, no sMerit decayed so far. However, if theymos would come to the thought that too many sMerits are hoarded, he might (or might not) reduce their number.

Per se, there is no such policy to state an expiration date of sMerits.

You have seen the policy wrote by @Coyster above. But it seems still not implemented all this time. However, it may be implemented in the future as it is already stated by forum.

In my opinion, there is no policy that expendable eligibility expires. If you have as many qualifications as you qualify for, you can give it to others and it will increase its rank. It is difficult to say what will happen in the future.

As stated above, currently it does not expire, although things are not immutable, and since it was hinted that they may decade at some point, that could happen at some point down the road.

In any case, they would not affect recently generated sMerits (as yours are), and would have more chances of starting in any case by affecting unspent airdrop sMerits - those generated when the Merit System kicked-off, and that were assigned in accordance to the following formula (totalling 600k sMerits forum wide at the time):

So the most you could get is if you were a Legendary who maxed out your activity points in the last year, in which case you would get 1 * 0.4 * 1000 = 400 sMerit.

Note that I later made an adjustment giving 500 extra merit to some hero members, but no extra sMerit was given here.

Really don't think spendable merits will have an expiring date. It's not something you'll hoard for so long without meriting someone else. Hoard smerits won't upgrade your rank or make someone special, it's created to rank members for their contribution in the btt forum

Yes, admin might take action to decay sMerits at anytime he want. Please see the quote, take your notice at the red-painted part. You can see this by click on Merit button after logging in your account.

I think the probability to see the sMerit decay is very low, but it is not impossible.

You have received a total of 476 merit. This is what determines your forum rank. You typically cannot lose this merit. You have 16 sendable merit (sMerit) which you can send to other people. I think theymos have given accurate answers before. The OP question is almost the same as the question answered by theymos.

So I noticed it says unused Merit can be decayed at some point in the future - What's the point of this?  Is it just to keep people from stagnating their Merit and not using it?

There is currently no decay, but if hoarding seems to become a problem, I might add it.

This means that merit permanent and will increase if someone sends sMerit to the user posts which will be accumulated to the number of merit.
