Basically a project that "runs" on hype will go viral. But an even better method to make it viral is a negative PR. They will promote a project that one has never heard of in a sense as if the project owners/product are doing a bad thing. Because negative news draws more crowd than a positive news and functions as a perfect clickbait due to psychological factors they go viral way more. People will want to know more about it and there you have it, a unethical method/yellow journalism.

Personally no I havent seen any project go "viral" after that 2017 q4 pump during which some project did become big by riding the blockchain hype. But if some project is doing that then I would be sure to put a red flag on it.

Speaking of hype project I think BSV is one that and it is viral recently because it reached the top 5 ranking volume in CMC. But yeah, it has a negative PR. There are a lot of criticisms against them and even one of the biggest trading company delisted BSV, Binance to delist BSV.

What are crypto projects that went viral fast? Can you name some of them?
What do you think about Bitcoin? Isn't viral now in your place?
Everything in crypto that pumps up fast it is going to viral.

Centra Tech
OneCoin
Bitconnect
Pincoin

Those went viral pretty fast and then turned feral just as fast.
Going "viral" means a pump with no real support is taking place and some will buy overprices coins or tokens or shares or whatever.

Anyhow, why are you interested in those? You ant to copy their marketing strategies?  Roll Eyes

High chance! Grin (Just joking).

If we do talk about projects that comes viral or too much Hype then there were lots of them back in to those years before that 2017 bull run.
I do still remember that Onecoin scam or even that Bitconnect ponzi.Project that do only build up hype is just for temporal ones and we cant
deny that these shady projects are most preferred to be used by scammers.More hype= More money to scam but not good for long term prospects.

@OP, we are just curios why you've been asking for this matter?

And to be fair, it's benefited Bitcoin itself sometimes like discussions about BTCPayServer or Lightning coming up thanks in part to viral discussions about BitPay. Or when Schiff messed up his pin/password/ private keys and blamed his wallet. All good exposure for Bitcoin nevertheless.

The crypto projects already in the game also are beginning to get more newspaper savvy -- piggybacking on already viral themes. Amazon forest fires (them Elon Musks and others donating crypto to #teamtrees, even using the opportunity to promote BitPay alternatives when BitPay blocked payments), then Australian bushfires (Binance etc.) , Greta Thunberg (Justin Sun's the regular hype jumper), and now coronavirus (again Binance and co).

Tell you what, they don't even need to do PR about themselves anymore, just get on what's trending and insert themselves into the news. That's regular marketing, btw.

Since OP is asking for "crypto projects" in general let's not limit ourselves to only ICOs and Scamcoins since even crypto exchanges and scam cloudmining sites can also be counted as one. Last year we all have heard about QudrigaCX and their users' misfortune brought to by the death of their owner who took the keys for the exchange's cold wallet with him, the news about him and their exchange went viral pretty quickly since we are talking about millions of dollars which is unrecoverable. Cloudmining sites that also made an exit scam made it into the headlines like how Hashocean suddenly disappeared without a trace, they stole a lot of money from their users as well. When we are talking about them going viral I agree to what others have said, you'll create more noise doing bad rather than good publicity for their project.

Speaking of hype project I think BSV is one that and it is viral recently because it reached the top 5 ranking volume in CMC.
Reaching top five rank is not something means legitimacy which everyone should know. It is the result of their black PR methods and shills on different social media to misguide people. Even in this century people still have faith in someone who had no credibility instead of doing their own research. If not enough evidence is present about legitimacy then following a no-touch policy is still difficult for greedy people.

Quote
But yeah, it has a negative PR. There are a lot of criticisms against them and even one of the biggest trading company delisted BSV, Binance to delist BSV.
That is bad for the shills but what I mean by negative PR is a clickbait to make people think that something bad is going to happen so they get interested in reading it but the article is actually shilling about the project and nothing bad actually happens. This type of articles and videos on youtube have a good click:view ratio.

basically any shitcoin that has gotten pumped in the past has also gone viral fast too. but that should never be your goal because such hype is never going to last as it is evident from the cryptocurrency market history. they all get dumped just as fast too with the exception of gigantic shitcoins like ethereum that dump a lot slower.
if you want a real successful project then look how successful projects went viral and stayed big. for example take a look at why bitcoin keeps on rising (hint: it has real utilities).

Great that you remembered hashocean, I wanted to write it. This was the most popular cloud mining website in 2016 and they stole millions of dollars, as I remember their scam leave affected bitcoin's price.
I want to include another very interesting and old projects:
1. Bitcoin Savings and Trust <-- it was ponzi scheme operated by Trendon Shavers.
2. Btc-E (Hack at first and then you know what happened finally).
3. Bitmixer <-- yeah, this website was super money making machine and quickly become viral but owner had to shut down it (no one was scammed).

On another hand viral projects are Bitpay, Binance and all of current widely used bitcoin related websites. But it was mentioned correctly, more noise is caused by hacks, scams and etc.
You can see projects that went viral and then got hacked/scam there: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=83794.0

On top of my head during the ICO boom in 2017, with hundreds of millions of dollars being raised in short amount of time.

  • Bancor
  • Tezos
  • Filecoin

I think Binance launch in 2017 went viral as well, I remember that they have to suspend accepting members because they have been overwhelm by so many crypto traders who want to get a piece of the action. Those projects really know to market their services thru social media, click bait articles, shills, anything under the sun that will put their name of top of the discussions that time.[/list]

Enjin Coin at the moment if you are into gaming. They have ALOT teams promoting them.

Binance have ALOT teams promoting them AND promoters to earn fees.
