Request an option to cancel a report.

If I have reported 20 posts and one of them I see I've reported it twice, it would be nice to have an option to cancel this report.
This saves the time of the mods to go trough and spears you a "bad report" ( no, i don't care so much about the bad reports).
It can be even with a cool down time of like 30 sec., It's enough if you make a mistake to correct it.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, happens to the best of us. In some cases I have PMed the mod of the board after making an erroneous report that could waste a significant amount of mod's time (e.g. on plagiarism), or if I reported something completely ridiculous due to getting lost in my tabs - so that they didn't think I'm completely off my rocker . I don't think this is a major issue needing a new feature.

I think it's been requested before and would be a good idea. I don't usually mark dupe reports as bad unless it's something they do all the time and mistakes and double sending do happen. I think there should be a field to give an explanation to certain reports as well. Some people won't know why something was marked as bad, especially if it was a dupe and one was good and the other not. I don't know how much theymos want to do on this current forum but it's something I hope is on the new one.

that would definitely be a great feature.
maybe the wish will be heard and at the latest with the new software there is something like that... so far i try to answer all questions/confirmations/remarks about reports via pn. of course it would be great for all involved if this could be handled directly in the portal of the repots.

basically a good idea and that would be a relief for everyone. maybe not so much effort to implement it with the additional "cancel" button.
but i think there are many other topics on the list with little features that it's hopeless.

Do not worry about your accuracy too much; one accurate report is worth many inaccurate reports.

I always get this as back up whenever I reported so I worry not at all about it.

Even so, I think it is a good idea since we can make mistakes too. But how about if it has been already seen by a mod but hasn't been marked yet? I think it will be good too if you'd see your report history and in there you'll see if it has been seen already or not (the cancel button should still be there if it hasn't been seen yet by a mod) if it has been seen then let it slip then the mods will take care of the status of it. Though I don't think it's possible on the current forum I think this might be a nice feature on epochtalk forum.

It has already happened like around 3 times already that instead of giving 1 merit to certain posts, for some reason my drunk brain instead makes me click on the report button and type the "1" there instead.

I'm not saying I'm in the "best of us" category, but that's definitely happened to me before (multiple times) and I recall wishing each time exactly what OP is suggesting, a way to cancel reports.  While it's not critical, it would be a good feature to have especially if it wouldn't take much effort to implement--and I don't know exactly what it would take, but I'm assuming it wouldn't be a big deal for Theymos to do.

I am not sure how difficult it would be to implement, but I do accidentally report posts from time to time. This could be useful.

A very good idea, but I think there is no point in cool down time (especially in such a short).
At the moment I have 6 unhandled reports, I know that their cause has already been eliminated (they were made more than six months ago). I would like to remove them, but it seems that they will hang now forever.

Wouldn't it be better if the "Report to moderator" button becomes disabled after you've reported the post once, and it should have a disabled text saying "Reported" ?
That would make it more convenient and it should be easier to implement than creating a whole page for the reports a user have submitted and options to remove them etc.

that would be one possibility.
with the "cancel" option you could also react to reports that are no longer necessary.
i.e. if someone edits his post and then doesn't need to be reported anymore.

This is actually how it's goona be on the new platform (Epochtalk) you can test everything on Coinbistro no option to cancel or edit a report but any ideas/suggestions are welcome.

There have been quite a few occasions where I have reported a post or new topic for being low value, spam, off topic, wrong board, etc., and then became suspicious of the content and the user posting it. After a short investigation, I've then ended up reporting those posts a second time for plagiarism. Similarly, I've reported a post for plagiarism, and then gone back and reported it a second time after finding stronger evidence of plagiarism.

Disabling the "Report to moderator" function would prevent me (and others) from doing this, so I would prefer a "recall" function instead.

Alternatively, a notification somewhere on the post that I have already reported it would be nice, much like merits are displayed. This would also help when I have a few days worth of reports waiting to be handled and have to be careful not to report the same posts again.

Yeb that would be nice but for now its you just see 1 month back on your reports history!
Maybe also an good thing would be that once or every half year unhandled reports would be canceld as nobody knows to deal with it,
and the most of them are not relevant anymore .
If so you can report it again in a better way when you report it .

Yep.

Someone should invent a breathalyser that pugs into the USB that you have to pass before you boot up your browser... or maybe put your credit card details into a site. Might stop a lot of drunken impulse purchases or embarrassing emails to your exes at 2AM  .

Maybe the button can be 'semi-disabled', ie it gives you a prompt like you have already reported this, are you sure you want to report it again?.

Reports are pruned after a short while anyway. I don't know how long unhandled reports stay in the queue but I don't think it's more than a couple of months.

What we need is a pop-up message or a highlighted phrases - Red (like we have when try to reply in threads that have last posts made more than 120 days ago) to warn that we already report that post.

"You already report this post. Please don't not report it twice. Thank you!"

With it, we won't report one post more than one time and won't have to re-check our report history, then cancel double-reports. If there is solution, it should be appear at the beginning of report process.

I think you should still have the option to report the post even if you have reported it before, and there's currently a open report. I remember a few times that I've reported in the past, I had come across new information which provided a better explanation to why I was reporting. Although, I'll admit this isn't something which props up often, I think a non obstructive notification should appear if you've already reported it, but you should be able to ignore that if you wish.

Normally, when i report i often use the script from suchmoon and it helps a lot to control what you report but some on cases when the i don't have the script around me, i start opening tabs (often spam is packes in grops of 5 or more on a page, sometimes the whole psge is full of it) but sometimes instead of spam you have non-English posts, you have to remember exactly which tab is the different one, or just send the repor at once. Most of my bad reports are exactly because of thst...

I guess it is better to have a "Show pending reports" webpage under the "Show recent posts" and etc, in which it would contain all reports that is not yet had any attention nor given an action by a moderator or an administrator. Then a feature in it that those pending can still either be deleted and/or edited by the user.

I think it would be better as it is a simple feature yet would help those active reporters to somehow have a fault management due to unexpected actions that can be caused by whatever the reason a user has (most commonly drunk )

All this could be just directly implemented in the new forum, which is still into the wilderness/hibernation mode. Its a little too baffling that the product has still not been delivered, its been what, 6 years? And millions has been spent only for it to be delayed for so long years?

Small issues like this will keep pilling up, cause apparently SMF is very hard to customize and work with, so yeah there is that.

I understand your points. With my suggested pop-up message, users will be still allowable to make double-reports. The message plays its role to remind they already report that post and if they don't have additional reference (of broken-rules, ie.) to report on the same post, they should not make double-report. It's my point when I thought of the message.

The idea of the popup is good. In fact, I've seen that on another forum which basically prohibits the user from reporting the same post again while allowing reports from others.

It is not good if completely prohibit re-report on the same post.

After reporting one post for the first time, there should be chances for us to find more details of that case and we need to re-report it with more details/ references.

As of now, the forum does not give us option to edit our reports and automatically resend/ reallocate re-edit reports to the same moderators who previously receive our first report on the same post.

Due to this, allow re-report a same post (by a same reporter) is good but it need support tool like a pop-up message.

Once you have made 300 good reports, the page https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=reportlist;mine shows a list of your last month worth of reports, including whether they have been marked good, bad, or remain unhandled. You could implement a system to be able to edit the unhandled reports. The issue with this is that if I report something with a borderline reason, mods view it but leave it unhandled, and I then edit it, it would need to move back to the top of the mod queue or risk not being seen.

It also doesn't solve the problem of accidental duplicate reports. The majority of my bad reports are because I've reported the same post twice without meaning to. When you spend time actively reporting, you read so much spammy nonsense that it all blends in to one and you can easily forget which exact permutations of "bitcoin is going to fly to the moon" you've read and reported before. This is especially true if it takes a few days for my reports to be dealt with, and the same spam posts are hanging around for a few days. A pop up or other notification would be preferable, I think.
