I also think that putting it in the darknet is pretty strange, wouldn't that limit the demographic you want to get in your site, unless it is a funding projects for something which is not conforming the social norms.

That was intended for more freedom and harder shutdown.
You know what else is pretty strange? Registering domain name for $5/year with fake reg info (nobody gonna check it anyway), getting TLS certificate for free from LetEncrypt and expecting people to trust you more.
