An anonymous person in Netherlands is bombing letters just to ask Bitcoin for him to stop what he's doing. This mailbomber wants Bitcoin and he won't stop unless he gets the Bitcoin payment he wants.

First bombing happens in Amsterdam when a worker tosses a package when he heard a hissing sound while arranging the mail. Fortunately no one got injured with the explosion. The second bombing happens less than an hour after the first bombing in Kerkrade. Although no one also got injured, there's a note asking for bitcoin to prevent further bombings.

With the investigation of the police, they said that both bombings are connected yet they have no link about the person who's exploding things up. They also haven't revealed the amount of Bitcoin the bomber was asking, but they're still doing further investigation.

This is also not the first time someone asked for Bitcoin in Netherlands. Almost the same incident happened last 2015, both were bombing things and asking for bitcoin.

It's a little alarming that they would really go that far just to ask for bitcoin. I don't think it's a big explosion but they can still hurt other people and they're damaging the image of Bitcoin and cryptocurrency as well. I don't know why would they do that because obviously, the police won't just send them Bitcoin so the explosion would stop. Because if they will do that, then everyone might just do the same in order to receive bitcoin so they'll just keep on investigating until they caught the suspect.

Much as I see it as a trap the government or the police shouldn't pay such dubious individual all in the name of bombing in exchange. This would generate mixed reactions towards Bitcoin and cryptocurrency in general. Maybe they are cooking some attacks through news media against Bitcoin if they went ahead to pay in bitcoin to the bomber.

Let the police swiftly go into investigation and fetch them out from their hidden, who knows, it might even be bitcoin hatters that want the ransom. Bitcoin is not for illegal activities even though choice belongs to individuals involve spending the coin.

Definitely not off-topic and I'm glad you made this thread since I wouldn't have found out about this otherwise.

What is this guy thinking?  I get why he's asking for bitcoin, as it's anonymous and he probably thinks the cops or government are just going to send it to his wallet and he can disappear with his digital riches--but there's no way the authorities would ever go for such a deal.  They never have, never will.  If they did, there would be no stopping anybody from pulling the same bullshit.

The only thing accomplished here is to give bitcoin a black eye, because I'm sure there are some news sites/shows/whatever that are playing up that angle of the story.  It's not even relevant what form of payment this dick is asking for; the unwashed, unthinking, uncritical masses will have yet more proof of how evil bitcoin is.  Ugh.

Damn!
This person is crazy, they really are going too far and doesn't care even if they harm people. This isn't the purpose of bitcoin, for blackmailing, not it's not for that.
I thought that it's just email blasting or email spamming but this is for real, a real bomb, small or not as long as it's hurting people this is truly wrong. He will be caught soon, I hope.

There have been criminals sending bombing mails and demanding Bitcoin for them before. If this Netherlands situation is seen as a negative thing for Bitcoin and people start to FUD it again through "it's widely used in illegal activities and by criminals"-like statements, that's a plain stupid move. Almost anything valuable is and can be used in illicit activity. Bitcoin is only better because they can simply send an address without anyone knowing its source/owner, rather than demanding fiat payment.

I've watched this week around 10 episodes of live pd, every ten minutes I was asking myself the same question, what were those idiots thinking!
Maybe he is out of options, wanting to make it big or at least get free food and cable for the next 10 years or he is simply insane.

Anyhow, if he goes on he will be tracked, if those things are really dangerous, taking into account the size of the letters he isn't using stuff you can buy at Aldi or Tesco. If not there those won't be that dangerous.
We're talking about letters, not parcels here.

It's a little alarming that they would really go that far just to ask for bitcoin.

It's not really about Bitcoin per se. On a fundamental level, they are just trying to extort money. Extortionists have engaged in countless similar schemes intent on extorting cash, like this one. Cases like this just prove the point that bitcoins are increasingly seen as real money now.

He's asking for Bitcoin because its an easy way of getting a ransom. What are the alternatives?

A cash dump? You have to retrieve it somewhere and risk being caught or at least photographed. The police usually put tracking devices in the money or paint bombs.
Using a fake bank account? Very hard to do and how will you take the money out? Using an ATM? There are cameras on every corner.
Bitcoin is a logical choice here but I'd choose one of the anonymous altcoins. Maybe he just wants something he used in the past and he's never traded altcoins before?

Maybe is this interpreted on a wrong way. The goal of attacker wasn't to get Bitcoin, he wanted financial gain but the reason why he asked for Bitcoin was anonimity or better to say relative anonimity compared to fiat currencies.
This is similar to online extortions, ransomware and similar where perpetrators ask Bitcoin to stop performing their criminal activities.
No matter that Bitcoin has lost a great deal of anonimity it's still much harder to trace it than fiat.

I think criminals choose Bitcoin to increase their chances of receiving money, buying Bitcoin is already a barrier itself, but buying Monero (for example) is even harder for a layperson, they'd have to get their hands on Bitcoin first and then trade it for Monero on some small exchange that still lists privacycoins. And if a criminal knows their stuff, they will mix their coins multiple times, then buy some privacycoin without doing KYC, then sell it for Bitcoin somewhere else, and only then cash out.

To be honest this kind of stuff is not surprising and what I am thinking is why the hell that crazy asshole will ask for bitcoin? I dont think Government will pay for this just to stop this nonsense chaos he is barking.

Maybe is this interpreted on a wrong way. The goal of attacker wasn't to get Bitcoin, he wanted financial gain but the reason why he asked for Bitcoin was anonimity or better to say relative anonimity compared to fiat currencies.
So what you mean here is the attacker is just simply gaining attention to avoid the usage of bitcoin? Is that so? Or trying to explain that bitcoin is no longer anonimity and can be trace now easily. Of course it is, cause its transparent blokchain method. Anyway your statement is quite vague but IMO, attacker wants to have a chaos that link bitcoin to news so there will be a huge fud or something to pull back its price.

No matter that Bitcoin has lost a great deal of anonimity it's still much harder to trace it than fiat.

It depends on how you do your transaction. Even if you use a mixer if it's designed with a lot of flaws somebody can still trace the tx. Fiat, and by that I mean cash, is way more difficult to trace.

This bombing is rather odd. The perpetrator must have a lot of materials to make the bomb and he can use it 'freely'. Especially when there's no guarantee he will get the bitcoin.

That's pretty stupid way to ransom. A sure way to get caught.
He can use his expertise to sell his work rather than risking his freedom. Though unethical, there are many people in Europe that are looking for explosives.  They might be buying them as a hobby or just for fun. The person could sell them those explosives rather than mailing it himself/herself.

PS: I'm gonna delete this if it was off-topic

This is a very desperate move if in case the bombing are connected to the person who are asking for bitcoin just to stop their actions.

Only terrorist can pull this kind of action or an opposition of the government behind this incident and they are using some black hat hackers to deliver the message. What is worst is that they are using bitcoin as a means of payment which can hardly damage the image of bitcoin.

There's a possibility that the bomber last 2015 and the bomber right now are linked to each other. Or the bomber now wants to copy the bomber in 2015 to get bitcoin?

I want to know if the bomber in 2015 was caught? And want to know if the bomber in 2015 gains some bitcoin in this kind of act?

This is a very desperate move if in case the bombing are connected to the person who are asking for bitcoin just to stop their actions.

Only terrorist can pull this kind of action or an opposition of the government behind this incident and they are using some black hat hackers to deliver the message. What is worst is that they are using bitcoin as a means of payment which can hardly damage the image of bitcoin.

But if this attack is from the terrorist they will admit it.

Let the police swiftly go into investigation and fetch them out from their hidden, who knows, it might even be bitcoin hatters that want the ransom. Bitcoin is not for illegal activities even though choice belongs to individuals involve spending the coin.

Exactly. A fiat "hater" could easily do thesame thing and demand for cash. I guess an attacker could also use this to justify cashless transactions if a Country is still cash based.

There are available ideas that can be used to deal with crime money without violating Bitcoin core values/features. Values like censorship resistant, privacy/anonymity, immutablity, trustless/permissionless transactions, transparency etc are very important. I think you don't deny people this important rights or values if they aren't guilty of any/serious crime.

This is how desperate this person is because he would go as far as bombings just to get the bitcoin he wanted. This type of action will only give a bad impression regarding bitcoins in the sense that other people would think bitcoin can make people crazy and do stupid things. I just wish he’ll get arrested, if he truly wants bitcoin he need to work for it and not disturb other people just for him to get one.

Almost the same incident happened last 2015, both were bombing things and asking for bitcoin.

https://cointelegraph.com/news/a-mailbomber-in-the-netherlands-wants-a-btc-payment-to-stop-blowing-things-up

PS: I'm gonna delete this if it was off-topic

This can give a bad impression for bitcoin indeed. I am upset that there are people that was desperate enough to commit that kind of unlawful behaviour. There are a lot of ways to earn bitcoin we just need to work for it.
Also, does the bomber last 2015 succesfully get bitcoins? Does he get caugt?

What is happening? They are that desperate to earn or get bitcoin? It is good that bitcoin is getting all over social media but I am not expecting that it will be this bad, even worse. As far as I know, there are no reports in the country that died because of that but someone was hospitalized because of the inhalation of the smoke on site. Take care, you guys.

There will always be things like that in the business world, especially businesses that do have good prospects like bitcoin, not a surprise if they have bad actions just to get a few bitcoins this actually makes the name bitcoin can be bad for some people who are indeed new to bitcoin.

I thought the "bombing letter" was like the SMS type where people bombing text messages to other people.
That is how I understand the title. Maybe you should change it. But I think it is not off topic since bitcoin is being stained here once again.

It is the safest method without much of a trace. That dude whoever do this is a coward.
I just hope people are already aware of what bitcoin is really is and not just a tool for receiving money using evil deeds.
Sorry, bitcoin.

Damn!
This person is crazy, they really are going too far and doesn't care even if they harm people.
What can you expect with people these days? they are capable on doing anything for the sake of money and they don't care on how it will affect someone's life. I won't be surprise if that person end up suffering the consequences of his actions because he let his greediness be a foundation of his decisions and actions. I don't understand why people will stoop down that low for bitcoin, let's say that bitcoin can make him rich but does he realize the trauma he can possibly give to people? the fear of being in danger? Maybe their conscience don't let them sleep at night so they will realize their mistakes, anyway be careful and stay safe everyone.

This is the main reason why the government is having a problem accepting bitcoin as a legitimate cryptocurrency that people can use for their commercials. Because some people are taking advantage of the anonymity the Bitcoin was offering. Probably in this part we should agree that AML and KYC are really needed. It is clear that a larger percentage of bitcoin users do not use Bitcoin for their crimes and evasion from the government such as taxes. But considering the small percentage of the people who use it for crimes is quite alarming enough for the authorities to prevent. That guy who does mail bombing is really stupid. Probably we should teach him how to earn money in a hard way. After him being convicted to jail.

What the hell, why would anyone do this? This is a criminal activity.

Doesn't he know that most people he asks for ransom from have no idea what bitcoin is? Sounds like the guy is mentally unstable because he would continue doing these things as victims exchange their money for bitcoin.

It is not good when bitcoin gets this kind of attention, all this leads to is hastily made decisions by politicians that lead to incorrect regulation and rules that slow down growth and adoption.

And I hope they won't. It will be a mistake if they try to lay that regulations since the people here are the wrong ones and not the bitcoin that is just being used for terrorizing people. Though it is really possible for bitcoin to be regulated more strictly by the government is this stretched out.

very alarming, actually quite a lot of criminal cases committed by persons with the use of a bitcoin background. My personal view on cases like this is stupid, because the consequences and what the criminals might get is not comparable (that's if they get the bitcoin). and even if these cases continue, the impact on the market demand will decrease.

This is also not the first time someone asked for Bitcoin in Netherlands. Almost the same incident happened last 2015, both were bombing things and asking for bitcoin.

Does the First incident last 2015 succeed?i mean the Bomber got what he wants?or whats the outcome of that case?mind to extend the News and trivia mate?

for this Recent case i think Police can have idea and lead about this suspect because nowadays?the process of finding criminals are very high tech and this can be track down at any chances if he continues to Send and explode Bombs.

most likely the culprit is someone from the bitcoin haters group because by committing crimes like this and linking bitcoin in it, I think this is a good opportunity for bitcoin haters to make bad news about bitcoin and they hope that the government will prohibit people from using bitcoin in the country them to avoid various other crimes.

I don't think so.He doesn't care about Bitcoin at all.He is just a sociopath,who wants easy money.
I think he is really stupid and insane, because nobody would pay him anything, because that doesn't guarantee that he will stop with this terrorist tactic. The authorities don't negotiate with terrorists and they don't pay them ransoms.By the way,I think it can be really easy to catch him. Those paper mails can contain his fingerprints,so the police could identify him.

Yeah yeah, there is always someone who is a bitcoin hater doing so
Everyone that scams via bitcoin must be a bitcoin hater, is the evil gubbermint who tries to stop bitcoin, from Karpeless to Ross Ulbricht everyone was a CIA agent trying to paint bitcoin in a negative way.

Wake up, bitcoin is not some pure virgin princess that can't be used for bad things. It can and in most cases, it's far easier for criminals to deal with this than with cash. That's reality, deal with it! Nothing changes!

After reading this post I am just thinking why the attacker/bomber is doing such a criminal acts.
It's either;
  • He lose too much in Gambling,
  • or, He lose huge in Trading.

A depressed individual will do such thing like these. The guy is too desperate to get some bitcoins. How sad it turns out to be like this. It's hard to speculate things, but I do hope authorities may have a trace already to know who that person. It will make such a huge problem if the bomb will gonna happen again and many person will get injured ( i hope not). He used bitcoin in a wrong way that is why it also ruined his life.

Yes, that's what would be the impact to the people that doesn't really understand bitcoin. And it will affect the polices too and might think of bitcoin is truly like that and made for that purpose.
Very disappointing people, they should've done this act if they only want to have bitcoin. They need to earn it honestly.

Possibly they want to get some Bitcoin from the people and give a bad name to Bitcoin at the end. Even at that point that nobody died, requesting for Bitcoin was my first concerns because they eventually get into it and use Bitcoin as a ransom for every of their demands. Let the  world knows that Bitcoin is not use for illegal activities even though some individuals thought of it to be. To them: Bitcoin can be acquire through buying and trading, I mean let them earn it legitimately and not through crocks.

An anonymous person in Netherlands is bombing letters just to ask Bitcoin for him to stop what he's doing. This mailbomber wants Bitcoin and he won't stop unless he gets the Bitcoin payment he wants.
I am expecting the authorities to grab this asshole as soon as possible, since this is a mail bomb the source of these will be known by the authorities and it is a matter of time that they nab the criminal.

Criminals will always find a way to carry on these stupid schemes and now they are targeting bitcoin thinking that it is a safe option to get free money, glad to hear that no one is hurt till now and wish that the criminal will be behind bars soon.

PS: I'm gonna delete this if it was off-topic

Though I don’t know who this person is but if I had to take a guess then I would suspect him to be a jobless youth who’s decided to take the easy way out, but I’m truly disappointed in the path that’s he’s chosen to earn bitcoins. Further this won’t effect bitcoin but it’ll definitely create panic around local residents, and which in turn may impact their tourism if this guy is not caught fast.

interesting news  . its my first time to read such news that a bomber ask for bitcoins  . at first thought i think you are talking about mail ( email bombing or spam ) but after i open and read the thread i saw that it was a real life bomb  . thats scary but why would they risk thier life when they can just give out what the bomber ask just for the safety of the people  . money is only money and can easily be find but if the life is lost ,it cant be return anymore  . also
, they can easily caught the criminal once they lend out the money  .
Theres no such thing about caring peoples lives on criminals mind as long they do able to make or extract money then they wouldnt really care.
Also, it isnt easy for someone to be caught specially he do ask out Bitcoin ransom which means its hard to traced it up thats why the only way
to caught this criminal on act while placing those bombs. This is just an another day on these kind of news which will give another negativity
towards cryptocurrency. Its just sad to hear it out.

You may not like what I say, but the current situation is one of the facts that confirm that certain control over the cryptocurrency market and the provision of passport data by cryptocurrency users can have certain benefits not only for the state in order to receive its taxes, but also for society,  to prevent criminal activity using cryptocurrency.  The fact is that every police officer or detective will tell you that any criminal who forces you to pay a ransom for a hostage or for another crime very often gets caught when transferring or using this money.  And if you use bitcoins or another cryptocurrency for this, then no one can practically catch the criminal.

Didn't expect that some people would really go this low just to ask for free bitcoins. I know some people would do anything just for money but asking them Bitcoin, I don't see any reason for the police government to give him what he wants. But if I were him, I won't do that kind of act because it's useless. If he keeps on bombing mails then he'll just end up getting caught.

Lol. The title could also be interpreted in other ways. But you're right, thankfully not what you're expecting.

I don't understand if they are pro-Bitcoin or anti-Bitcoin.

They are destroying the image Bitcoin has, not just Bitcoin but all of the cryptocurrencies as a whole. This is worse than being scammed out of your money or cryptocurrencies. The people will hate it and the government will obviously make a policy or limitations about Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies for sure, I hope no one gets hurt from this.

this is one proof that Bitcoin is really taking place in the scene and no wonder even Bomber are now getting into it.
we are near to see more of this kind to tell the world what is Bitcoin and how important this is for the whole world.

Because if even terrorist/bomber wants to accumulate this then why not simple people like them?

It's a little alarming that they would really go that far just to ask for bitcoin.

It's not really about Bitcoin per se. On a fundamental level, they are just trying to extort money. Extortionists have engaged in countless similar schemes intent on extorting cash, like this one. Cases like this just prove the point that bitcoins are increasingly seen as real money now.

You actually have a point there. Bitcoin is increasingly being adopted at an amazing rate since 2017 and some criminals are now seeing the potential of Bitcoin in this kind of scenarios, though it isn't his lucky day because there's no way that the authorities will give to this demand. Just look how crazy what his doing is. What a crazy time we are in right now. I bet they are a group of notorious bombers and the same group who did the bombing in 2015 but different members.

I see what's happening here. Nothing has changed but the ransom.
Earlier, people used to do the same kind of crimes and ask for cash and gold and other luxuries and now it's bitcoin.
Criminals have got smart to ask for bitcoin as ransom since they know it's hard to track.
It's the duty of the cops to investigate the crime and look for the criminal. Paying the ransom will just invite other criminals to do the same.

He must be punished. Is someone already working on this case? The FBI or someone else?

It was in the Netherlands. The FBI is not a European organization.
If there's a bomb threat usually it's taken over by counter terrorists and all countries have units experienced in these matters. If he keeps sending these bombs he's going to get caught.

Unfortunately these things get drafted hastily and look good as wins to a majority of people who don't know or care about bitcoin, they aren't going to be more informed and with all the negative press it is easy for a politician to demonize it and get a victory.
Any updates about this? What I want to know here is that what is his motive in this bombings. Is he planning to take down bitcoin and crypto currencies so that people would think negatively of it or he wants the government to totally ban it or make a strict regulation in using it? It is just annoying that a lot of people are trying their best to introduce bitcoin to the people and it is being destroyed just by this incident.

Long time since the last time i see this kind of attack. I didn't think it was a serious attack because the mails can be filtered, so, this kind of attack should be fixed from the server-side.

It would be nice to know how much the hacker asks for this attack.

Despite the fact that they have mentioned bitcoin or fiat individually, they seem to be a bit of a slime slime ball. I believe that this person has been imprisoned for quite some time and has been left behind in prisons, thousands of young people like to check the mail, and some dickheads in need of more bitcoin can actually hurt a touching child.

Totally agree, such actions can destroy BTC and Crypto market's image for a lot of people.

Desperate people can do anything just to Gain money even how bad it can go,there are some news in past that a robbery forced entering a House of person who has Bitcoin and hitting Him just to get His private keys.
and there is also many cases connected to bitcoin crime .
but this Mail bombing is unique because this was properly planned as the sender surely Knows the Victim.
If i were to receive this kind of mail?maybe i will sent Him Bitcoin than ruining my family.

The government should not give them bitcoin because if they do, others will do the same thing just to get bitcoin, there are so many cases happen something like that but they are asking for the real money, strangely those criminals are asking for bitcoin, it seems like they are really familiar on bitcoin but what if those crimes happen on a country that bitcoin is not really familiar, then ransom won't happen, I think the country that these crimes happen is a country that bitcoin is really known and familiar.

Good thing is that the government did not let the criminals receive bitcoin because that us the good thing to do.
Well, it happens most of the time especially for those unfortunate people they tend to do some bad things just to get money and doing crimes is the easiest but dangerous thing to do to get money.

Bitcoin is the easiest money the criminal or terrorist will demand as once it's in the wallet, no one can take that anymore, I would not be surprise if there is a kidnapping and the kidnappers would just ask a ransom in the form of crypto or bitcoin.

Long time since the last time i see this kind of attack. I didn't think it was a serious attack because the mails can be filtered, so, this kind of attack should be fixed from the server-side.

Seriously? Et tu, Brute?
It was a real mail, a physical package, a real bomb, not a hack!!!!!!

but this Mail bombing is unique because this was properly planned as the sender surely Knows the Victim.

Another one!
The victims were a bank and an electronic store, the bomber has said that it will send random packets till they pay up.
Bottom line, two months have passed, nobody was arrested, no bombs were mailed from February, so probably we will not hear anything about this from the officials so better to lock it up.
