You need to have at least TWO copies stored in physically in separate locations. If the guy is smart, he might still have another one hidden somewhere.

Also, to write a 12 words in a paper with your own hands doesn't really need A4, actually more like A6 or so. Do NOT handle private keys directly ever, do not use the old style paper wallets, if you have one move all the funds to a proper seed word phrase wallet.

If the money is truly lost, well at least those burned coins should benefit Bitcoin as a whole by the slight added scarcity.
