Don't hold some good but random altcoins for a long time. If you still want to hold then don't leave their telegram group or other social accounts, check updates on a regular basis. Because if you just hold and keep it in a wallet for 2 years then who knows after 2 years your coin's value may turn into zero value, because of the swap!

I lost many coins because of swap things! Recently Insolar is swapping their token, I did not know about it, because I have been holding for two years but did not care enough as the price was very low! Today I was checking the Coinmarketap android app and saw Insolar coin increased by 530% but their ticker is XNS when I knew it was INS! So, I joined their telegram and get the updates about the swap! Unfortunately, If I fail to swap on time then all of the value of my holding coins will be zero! So, except Bitcoin, Ethereum, don't trust any coin for just buy and hold for a long time, rather keep updating yourself!

Of course knowing the update of the coin is very important for holders of long-term investments. I experience the same thing when I don't swap coins that I hold. and finally the coins I could not use. Following the project update is strongly recommended for holders.

Taking profits at the right time is good,  but I think for some quality altcoins with use-case are good to hold in the long-term.

If you invest in a coin it's your responsibility to follow how the coin develop, or you have just wasted your money without knowing if your losses or gain a profit, you should also know when to sell your coins at the right time if the developers are trusted and they have a solid roadmap, then it's ok to hold long term.

This is very common especially most recent projects. Sometimes they are forced to swap their previously issued token for the sustainability of the project and sometime it might be due to further implementation of some features that are never part of the initial plan and the need for scalability and more efficient blockchain platform than the previously adopted one. Gymreward has done that also. They migrated from the Ethereum blockchain to the EOS and up till today, some people could not swap there token

In summary, don't be a victim of pump and dump coins.

Newbies usually get the wrong idea when the coins are pumping. They're having the FOMO and that's why they buy at the top of those coins. The action they'll take is when they see the coin doing well but if it's not, no actions will be taken.

It's how they respond to the markets sudden change of movement.

Shitcoins tend to swap because their value to the dollar is so low.

I watched that shitcoin BTK being swapped and even if you held it and did everything right you'd still lose value because the new coin after the swap was worth much less proportionally to the pre-swap version. It's like they're trying to make it tradeable again but it's still not enough in most cases.

You see a coin undergo a swap? Stay away from it.

In my case, I do'n't have no other choice but to hold because the price of some of my alts holding are low, having no trade volume and some are showing signs of recoveries in which I think holding for a little longer would be more beneficial than selling at this point especially to those alts which are included to the 'mainstream' ones. I am hoping still that the prices would go higher upon the halving, so I decided to wait for a little longer.
Taking profits at the right time is good,  but I think for some quality altcoins with use-case are good to hold in the long-term.
I do believe that what could happen to Bitcoin's market value after the halving could reflect to the market price of some altcoins that I am holding which boosts my patience to not sell at this point despite of some redmarks we are seeing. There could be chances that the market prices can still climb their way up which could generate more profit. And for those that won't, i would probably hold them than to lose money from selling at this low point.

Well obviously you need to keep a track on the projects and not hold too many token projects on your wallet. If i see a swap coming and i don't have time to deal with it, i just leave my coins on exchange if it's trusted enough. They are usually handling the swaps and i am not that paranoid when it comes to good exchanges.

I have faced this personally and i know the pain of being deprived of our rightful portfolio just because we were not active in their telegram channel and i think even if swap is necessary or cannot be prevented all old coins or tokens or coins should be auto swapped with new one and im sure smart contracts can perform this task easily, so i feel it is an illegal and unethical practice to deprive someone of his holdings through complicated swap processes.

I have experience this kind of problem way back, it was a bounty token and I left the official telegram group. When I once checked my alts one by one, following ever inch of their shadows if the they are still alive or dead already, I saw something that was worth but a different token already, they swap the coin and now it is too late for me. It was worth a sell but how would I know, if this post were somehow earlier or I am pack with advanced knowledge about swapping tokens.

That's why we need to care more about "what we do" and "what we choose". Get used to all done with a full plan, do not forget to record and check periodically through an official account, turn on notifications for channels and telegram groups of projects that you follow to get the latest information.

That is, cryptocurrency is sometimes full of surprises, the price can pump many times over before it was worthless and we ignored it. So don't underestimate anything here, hopefully, what the OP is sharing can be a lesson for us all.

I was also a victim myself, I have altcoins that I hold for a long time but my mistake is that I didn't check the telegram group until its too late. Good thing is that its not that big amount though, probably around 100$.

Lesson learnt for me, currently, I also have small amounts of token that I have been holding for 2 years. But I do keep regular checks now if there are updates or whats not. So that I won't lose them in case there are some changes like swap or something.

Anybody holding altcoins from ICOs is probably completely wrecked by now. Most of these really didn't hold their value, particularly if they completed in the early half of 2018.

I think people should just set alerts for all their coins using something like tradingview, rather than checking all the time, otherwise that just caused unwanted anxiety.

It must be really hard though, I mean once you got your token from bounty, then the next thing is to check whether it was listed or not. Then after that you have to check the price regularly, but the swap thingy is very different though as it might really good everyone off guard.

And if you let it sit in your wallet for a long time, then this is one of the dangers. Haven't experience this one though, but I understand the OP's rant, I mean you are holding that token that long and probably work hard for it and one day to your surprise it worth nothing.

Yeah swapping can be really damaging for passive investor or hodler who is not much active or online because he can simply miss the claiming or swapping deadline and then the only thing he can do is sit and watch his original coins that have become useless and worthless after the swap, i have one suggestion for serious project teams that have to undergo swaps and that is keep the claiming or swapping process open for lifetime so that anyone can come and claim new tokens by sending the old tokens to teams wallet, i think this is the only logical solution to this problem.

I will stick to your subject line.

It is not healthy to just hold your altcoins, you need to do follow up, set up a bot alert on telegram to notify you of every pinned posts.

Set up a trade alert to keep you abreast on price flows.

Likewise, you need to follow your portfolios projects on twitter, most especially because altcoins especially are funny.

Token swap can occur any time, and only the right setup can keep you informed.

Recently, cyfm, hubrisone, and even One (Harmony) tokens just did a token swap.

What shall it profit an hodler, to hold for a long time without a follow up??

Is it good to hodl tokens for long term?? If your research and details is correct and sure YES.

But ALWAYS FOLLOW UP your portfolio

I agree partially on this, why to just hold when you can hold and stake?! In that way your amount will grow and you will benefit from
that holding in two ways, price can increase and you will have more coins.
But some alt-coins don't have staking option, many of them don't. I still decided to hold them for a long time because I believe their
value will rise over time. Chances for them to go to zero value exist, but I am ready to accept that risk and to hope for the best.

Your topic makes me wonder if there is an app that notifies you about important updates such as swaps of coins you are interested in. It would make our life easier rather than having to follow TG channels, tweets...
If anyone knows about such an app, please share it with us.
