Boasting about beautiful girlfriend and fat pay checks is not a right thing to do, especially when you live in a lawless country like Nigeria! You can't hide your beautiful girlfriend but you can definitely hide your finances! $10,000 USD in Nigeria is worth 3.6 million Naira, so you can understand how big that amount is for an average Nigerian. So the holder should have kept quite about it! But unfortunate death is always a Sad news! May his soul rest in peace!

Wow 3 million of their hyperinflated fiat money that you need to carry in bags to buy something as trivial as a used car.
Even if he was killed for 10k it would still be such a stupid thing to die for. No money is worth defending with your life and taking someone's life for stupid 10k USD makes me doubt in humanity. You have to be worse than an animal to murder someone for a few dollars.

It is sad to read this kind of story.  I believe whether it is in paper money or digital currency, we should be silent about how much we are holding. We never knew what is the intention of people around us, just like what the article is assuming about the victim's friend plotting all of those bad things just to have access to the cryptocurrency that the victim is holding in his mobile phone.  If the victim did not tell anyone about his holdings, that incident won't have happened.  So the lesson learned from this sad incident is to stay quiet about our crypto or cash holdings whether it is big or small.
We have to understand that we can't trust anything or anyone, especially when money is involved because even the person you consider as friend can betray you for the sake of money. It is the reason why we should be attentive on every actions that we are making because people can used it as an opportunity to exploit our funds. This kind of story can enlighten people, particularly those who tend to share everything with their friends or workmates, it can make them realize how it can affect their lives.

Infact really lawless country!
Right now as we speak we donot know if,the president (Muhammed BUhari )is the rightful person in Govt house or an impostor (by name Jubril).

***There have been series of capture photo on web where the 80 year's man  appear's to be under 65 year after his last visit to UK.

Well, i'm sorry for the victim. May his soul rest in peace.

Final note : when it comes to keeping my bitcoin i, prefer computer/notebook to tablet/smartphone. Alternatively, i can split & only transfer a small portion to any wallet associated to my smartphone.

Thanks

I guess this whole incident just further shows that people should be extremely careful and be mindful about the kind of people they discuss anything relating to crypto with,
Not everyone who ask or enquires about crypto has good intentions after all, people have to be extra careful indeed, this is very sad news.

Well, that is very sad news and this can make us as warned and must be careful sometime. Because robbery now and theft are everywhere waiting someone to be the next victim. Bitcoin is valuable stuff we should extremely be careful about it like holding our own wallet.
I imagine now in my self and asking, that is not a good idea if you kill people just because of money.
Indeed, this awareness is very important to us.

Human imagination and greed know no bounds. It's very sad what happened to this man. No matter how much money he had, nothing like this should happen at all. Unfortunately there are places in the world that people can kill for a watch, a pair of shoes or even branded sunglasses.

When it comes to disclosing the money we have, it doesn't matter whether we're talking about crypto or other currencies or valuables. We should always be careful who we tell about it, and preferably not tell anyone.

General rule, dont tell them your stash. You dou dont know who to trust, this can be the example for networkers that flex their balances on social media.
They are exposing their privacy and eventually loss their own security.

Jumping on someone to get him to give you the seeds/private keys/passwords is the most stupid thing someone could do. If they were hackers, it must have been their last resort to accomplish the task. Roll Eyes

The most ridiculous thing to happen to any cryptocurrency Holder, although this was unfortunate for the victim to be killed just because of $400. He should have let it go and give it out to save his life, life is  more precious than the $10,000 if it was there in the victim wallet.  We shouldn't trust anyone beside ourself. Knowing fully  well that these miscreants will not get jail when caught, would have signal the victim in releasing the fund. May his soul rest in peace Brother.

Of course, in the middle of the act, there was a revelation that Mr. Iroro Wisdom Ovie's cell phone had $10,000, but I don't believe the group's initial intention was $10,000.
Are you claiming that it was not a robbery and it was politically motivated and if that is the case it is a different story altogether but the reports coming out are different and i wont be believing everything what the news says as i have first hand experience about what a newspaper says and the reality of things but here in this case the news that is coming out says that one his friend knew about his BTCitcoins stored in his phone and while they entered his house to rob him he was able to identify the buglers and hence they shot him.

Right, moving forward every crypto person should be quiet, there might be instance that you talk to someone in public and the term 'BTC' come up, but that's it, don't tell you have this x amount in the mobile phone in the wallet you carrying right now. Otherwise, this person will rob you in gun-point, specially if you resides in a country wherein there is a high crime rate such as robbery.

Unfortunately, there are still people like him who even lies and boost there balance even if it wasn't the real amount of money on the crypto wallets. And that put him into danger. So, it wasn't $10,000 but $400.

This can be a lesson learned for everyone here. Do not ever reveal your crypto wallet balances even with your closest friend. This is something private and we can't even tell what's on their mind.

Nigerian Man Shot Dead by robbers to access his mobile phone with crypto

Quote
“Investigations so far have also revealed that the bosom friend of the victim arrested had hinted one of the suspects of the discovery of $10, 000 in the victim’s Bitcoin wallet and then contacted the other suspects for the robbery operation. “From the confessional statements of the suspects, their intentions for carrying out the operation was to dispossess Iroro of the $10, 000 in his Bitcoin wallet but were disappointed to find out that what was left when they struck was $400.

Read more at: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/02/4-arrested-over-killing-of-delta-pdp-member/

I don't want to bring this news, but I guess everyone in crypto should understand the dangers whether online and offline. And another sad thing is that the man doesn't have $10k, but rather $400.

Also, we need not to tell anyone of our bitcoin stash, otherwise others might be tempted to robbed us as what happen here.

This kind of news is really sad to hear but this will be a big lesson for everyone not to tell how much worth of Crypto Currencies they posses because some people might get jealous and do bad things to you even if it is your own friend or anyone you know. Everyone should be vigilant these days because of those ill-minded people that not just lurk around the internet but also in the real world. The good thing in here, the robbers got arrested and will be brought to justice for what they do.

The world is getting darker and darker with so many bad people in our communities. One thing that I can say is that we should never show off our assets and our properties. There is always someone bad there watching every step of ours to know whether it will be worth taking our properties or assets from us. Whatever happens, please give to armed robbers whatever you have on you because once you have life you have the strength and brain to make money.

This is one of the reasons I stopped attending gathering that'll disclose my involvement in the cryptocurrency industry. Individuals who're involved in cryptocurrency are presume to be wealthy or living a comfortable life and at risked of getting harassed like the man who was shot dead was. May his soul RIP.

We're battling so many issues in my country, while others (enthusiast in other countries) can boldly present themselves as cryptocurrency enthusiast, you'll have to apply caution if you're a Nigeria as it'll definitely draw attention both from the law enforcement agencies and criminals (kidnappers and arm robbers).

We just have to be careful and avoid issues like this by playing it safe, keep a low key as well as keep your private safe. My condolences to the family of the deceased.

It is strange that this is getting media attention, because people are getting robbed every day and it is not getting special attention.  Roll Eyes I guess the fact that they thought that this guy is having $10 000 worth of Crypto currencies on his phone, makes this news worthy.  Tongue

A lot of us are walking around with mobile phones, linked to Banking Apps that gives robbers access to all our money in our Bank accounts. So it is not just Bitcoiners that are vulnerable, because the money in your Bank accounts are just the same.

These criminals will cut off your finger to get your password and there are not a lot you can do about that. To prevent large losses, rather keep a high percentage of your coins in cold storage and do not talk about it.

You're a legendary member. So surely you know the difference between robbing someone from their banking app and bitcoin are not "just the same"

That is sad news.

It is a lesson for us to be more careful to secure our wallet. We don't need to carry the wallet on the mobile phone with us, especially if we are not at home because that can attract bad people to try to steal the funds. As long as we don't tell other people about what is inside our mobile phone, and we don't tell them that we have crypto, we can feel safe.

Right now, the robbers or thief or whatever the name are smart, they know and read what is going on in real life and internet because they can search for anything they want. So we need to be wise in anything and still trying to protect what we have.

It's sad because the thief should understand that only he can unlock all the cryptocurrency assets, whereas now he as the owner of the wallet died because he was shot, it will be a treasure that can never be opened by anyone.

the thief should be able to think long enough to at least give time and be a little more forceful so as to make him despair and give access to his wallet.

This is the main reason why I don't want to share my involvement in crypto to anybody around me even with my family.

In our country, incidences like that isn't happening right now but as more and more people will learn it the more chances that robbers and scammers will emerge and that can be a big risk to our life. Securing wallet? Not sharing Private keys? These are useless if you are boasting your Bitcoin to other people like you are a rich kid in the street. Just don't share your involvement in crypto at all in order for you to be safe. I know that sharing information about Bitcoin is good but there is a risk in your life if you are doing it.

The truth is sad that for money they do not mind destroying friendship and any ties that may have been generated, I think it is delicate to be saying that you have Bitcoin or Crypto, they are things that can never be aired, you should almost have anonymity, for security personal and even family many times.

In wallets from phones it is good to have it, but not with so much money, I think that you have to store large amounts in a wallet from the PC or Trezor, this way you avoid many problems.
