Internet has always been the most valuable commodity in the world, it will continue to be so because it allows us to connect with each other all around the world. But lets not forget that all other things you are paying for every month is also equally important and also even provides for your internet as well in some cases.

Electricity, water, gas, phones, these are all important stuff that you have to keep paying for, without water you can't take a shower or to go bathroom, without gas you can't get hotter and during winters it might result with some people dying, without phones you will not be able to check whatsapp every five minutes to see if there is a new message (okay maybe I might be too harsh on phones). So, yes internet is very important and maybe more than some others but others are also very important as well.

I didn’t check WhatsApp every five minutes. Everyday I wake up at morning, and looking at the dire world that we lived on, and sip a little water, and a little grub food, and fall into sleep again, that’s what a time to be living, wake up and go back to sleep, I think it’s best to integrate sleep bed, pc and toilet into one unit, so we can’t be separated.

Internet companies are the ones that are really going to benefit at this time because everyone is at home and most people are spending their time on TikTok, Triller, and Instagram and other social platforms. Whenever I open my Instagram I'm always seeing Triller and TikTok videos, like so many of them everyday. That shows that a lot of people are bored and they are looking for ways that they can keep themselves busy and not get bored.

Another set of people are the internet/network providers, they are other companies that are going to profit, but I'm hoping that they cut their charges and make things easy for people.

They will definitely benefit a lot, the underlying cost of internet itself is negligible, it’s lower cost than water pipe network, railway network, and yes we don’t argue with the initial cost invested into developing 5G, or even the previous 4G, 3G too incurred high RnD cost, by now internet company are ripping profit from their investment, it wouldn’t take very long for them to become most valuable company, and little doubt about internet become a commodity that’s cost an arm and a leg.

I think you are wrong regarding how much the Internet will cost to us, regular people. As others pointed out in this thread, technologies are evolving, and the price of advanced devices becomes lower, not higher, with time. That's a fact.

I for one, think that Google search will become not free one day, but it doesn't mean it will become expensive for regular users. Let me explain. There are 3.5 billion google searches per day currently. If everyone of us was paying $0.00001 per search, it would be amounting to $0.01 per day, max, pretty affordable, while for Google it would be a good profit, namely, $35,000. But it doesn't matter how much Google makes. What matters how much we pay for the service.

I personally don't mind Google employees were getting good salaries for their job. Do you?

The internet is nothing special really, just a network. If we will end up in some sick cyberpunk future where the internet will cost a lot for some reason -- people will just use thier own networks via long-range wifi bridges.

There will be an alternative. Cratoon thanks for pointing that out. I didn't think about this matter, I thought internet will be
cheaper and faster, it's the trend in last 15 years, the time I using the internet and paying for that.

I fully admit that the Internet will become more expensive in the near future. But to be honest, I’m not afraid of this, since the Internet is a very good tool for studying information from various fields. This is one of the few places where you can openly convey the truth to people.
This is really the reality for now. Internet has become very in demand since all works today are already controlled by the internet, and without internet connection, those works will not be totally done. So we should not be surprised if one day internet would become the  most expensive commodity because everybody is relying on it for our own business and personal transactions.

the longer the internet becomes a basic need of every human being, where by using the internet they can simplify their work. especially now that there are many job opportunities that use basic internet. especially for the coming year, of course there will be more and more jobs

A commodity must be limited (or scarce) to become more expensive. Meanwhile, if you want to limit the bandwidth, you must use all resources, so no more new fiber optics, towers, switch and routing, etc., constructed.

The internet is like the car's speed; the only thing holding it back is the human's imagination.

Recently, social platforms like Tiktok and Triller has been what’s trending. Anytime I login to Instagram what I see is just videos of people dancing on Tiktok or Triller and uploading it to their Instagram page. And when I try to use the social media platforms I notice that they are consume data so much. I have stayed away from them and don’t want to be using them much.

I spend most of my time sleeping everyday lol, or watching some CDs I have purchased and downloaded in the past. The network providers in my country have not reduced the rate we pay for data, despite the current situation. Really bad Shocked.

Internet is already part of our lives and there's a huge business that lies in it. Imagine a two decades ago or more, people thought of the internet as something crazy technology that we don't even think how it will touch everyone's lives.

We are in a reality where technology is really advancing from time to time and most of the things digitally ran by an internet. Internet makes our life easier when we work, study, make research and etc., it has many uses and the information that we can get there is unlimited. It also connects us using our social media accounts, it is amazing how people make this kind of innovation and discoveries. The information and contents that are enclosed in internet is very reliable and informative to people who really needs that information.

Up to the point that it became a need for every business, enterprise, and household. We may get some free data but I doubt it that we'll get free internet access. Businessmen understand the trends and that's how they make money from things that we need and use despite regulations or laws that will be passed to give us free access.

If it becomes a business, it will be the most expensive because we can't live without an internet, like what I've said, it make things easier. It helped a lot of people, it manipulates people because it is so powerful that no one can imagine. There is also money in the internet, Youtubers get money from youtube and Youtube is enabled by the use of internet. Even our cellphones need to be connected to the internet in order to have an access to our accounts in social media. It is surely required in any business, communications and connections are important in a certain business to easily approach other people. Some enterprises are easily manipulated by an internet and that's the advantage of internet in some businessman.

The Internet will become cheaper and faster, centralized or not. There's always a competition between major search engines and Internet providers. People will switch to your competitor if you'll go nuts with fees, ads etc., so it's better to keep the fees and ads at low. Every businessman knows it, so we have nothing to worry about.

Even today I keep using Yahoo! search engine from time to time, because they don't block sites that stream new movies in my area. And this option is impossible to eliminate, so the giants will be doing what suits for the most of us, or they will go bankrupt otherwise.

I would like to research what most internet bandwidth being ulitilises on, I’m not interest in the demographic distribution of internet users over the world. To my surprise most internet bandwidth are being consume in the form of entertainments, streaming, videos, gaming, anime, only a tiny slice of bandwidth are attributed into productivity: financial transactions, educations, tech support, legal support, govt support.

I think internet data compression is one crucial component of internet, many data are compressed into many algorithms to save data bandwidth, no matter how powerful the network cabling technology, without decent compression, we would never have enough SPEED, more speed, need for more speed, the compression algorithm is what fascinated me, I think it can compress data that’s typically infeasible in the ratio of 1/10, over the air to your pc.

As much as free internet is desirable someone must pay for it. Some leaders campaign with free internet as a very attractive promise especially for young men but the cheaper its get the more we need it. IMO I consider internet to be getting cheaper than in past years and it is also having more and better uses. Cases like crytocurrency pose internet to be indispensable, now the pandemic forces more use of internet for those working from home.

Getting cheaper? I used to pay for only broadband in the past. Today we pay for mobile data, broadband data, VPN data, anti virus, cloud computing, cloud storage, subscriptions, yyy, oh and you tell me you are paying lesser on the internet? Ironic!

Have to disagree. I first started using internet in 2004. It has been 16 years and I have seen a lot during this duration. Back then, I was having a 32 KBps connection and it would take ages to open a web page. Now I am using a 2MBps connection. Back then, I used to pay around $25 per month for this 32 KBPS connection, and there was an upper limit of 500 MB of data transfer per month (yes.. you heard it right. I can use a maximum of 500 MB data, that is less than 0.5 GB). Now I am paying around $3 per month for my 4G connection, which is having a speed of 2MBPS and data limit of 1.5 GB per day.

And in 2004, I was using Norton antivirus, which cost me $10 for one year. Now I am using Kasper anti-virus, which costs me $20 for three years (i.e $6.7 per year). I have free VPN (provided by Kasper) up to 300 MB data per day. And I have free cloud storage from Google Drive.

Now please educate me on how the stuff got costlier.

Yes I know and realize about something that might be free but at the same time I am also aware and the promises are just a strategy for them to attract more enthusiasts so I will not expect about everything they promised, because we also cannot live with something that is constantly free because if that happens we don't have the struggle to improve financially and also the country requires a lot of costs for a lot of development in many sectors.

Ikr, everybody trying to race to the bottom, how about this, many years ago I used local area network, and I can download the entire library of data’s (videos, mp3, games, pictures, ebook) over the locally connected devices within the campus, it’s free, I didn’t even pay one dollars for it, and also I used adhoc connection it’s free, I can game on it over local area network with friends, and again it’s FREE, no cash needed. Local network and internet are not the same, it didn’t serve the purpose you want it to do, you go to internet because you want something that’s precious, you can’t get it on without spending a fortune, I don’t blame the free vpn or free cloud computing, they all serve the very distinctive demand, and they’re free, not without any constrains, because free items are prone to abuse, google will delete your data without prior notice, free vpn can’t access some communist country, cheap internet can’t have strong connection, latency, uptime, privacy, blah.
In a summary, you want quality content, pay for it, and pay decently, no exception to internet, I pay a bomb to learn the lesson.

Internet parabolic growth would come to an end, it’s not infinite, internet can’t be faster than light.
Dude, I used car speed as a metaphor because it's still a long way to reach the speed of light. If we talk about bandwidth, you can simply double your cable to get twice bandwidth, and if the scientist can't discover a new type of cable, they can make it smaller and add more quantity just like transistors in a chip.

In a summary, you want quality content, pay for it, and pay decently, no exception to internet, I pay a bomb to learn the lesson.
I disagree about free internet as well, but I'm not gonna say internet will be expensive af so nobody will use it. Remember the law of supply and demand...

Do you?

Having a price on internet itself is already silly, we are paying for a connection that’s only existed virtually, Internet  has no intrinsic value, for instance gold has intrinsic value, bitcoin has intrinsic value, bitcoin mining cost is the intrinsic value, gold mining cost is the intrinsic value, what’s internet intrinsic value? You don’t mine internet, you just connect internet over the air with a little electric energy converted into radio wave and broadcast into the air to the space to the satellite and reflect it into the satellite disc receivers on the earth ground and decode the data and read it on the computer, the intrinsic value might be just a fraction of dollar, but we pay hundreds dollar for it. Not gonna call it cheap anytime sooner.

The internet undergoes a massive evolution over the past decade, I don’t have the documentary to record the entire timeline, but the evolution is very huge, you can’t go past it and unnoticed it’s changes, it’s very simple in its infancy, it’s now a very complex, a military complex, a political complex, societal complex, cultural complex, a international wide complex, from surface web to deep ground zero web Area 51, I didn’t even know what I’m talking about.

I stand corrected, we are actually sending EM waves, EM waves can travel much longer distance and much faster much noise resistance.
