Question...

Can you use the mobile application with both the Nano S and Nano X to simply view your balances?  I know you can only send/receive via the mobile app with the Nano X.
Yes. I only have the Nano S and I use iOS, so there is a limitation by Apple that doesn't let people use the device plugged through the lightning port (and only the Nano X has Bluetooth), so I just use it to view my balances.

To do that, in Ledger Live, go to Settings, Accounts and select "Export accounts". Then, go to your mobile app and scan the QR code that keeps changing. This will create a watch-only version of your wallet in the mobile app. This means that you can also receive coins in your wallet (but without the proper security, since the app can be tampered somehow), so you should be careful with that.

If you are using Android OS 7+, then for over a year you can also use Nano S + Ledger Live mobile to send transactions, not only to check balances. That restriction has existed for a while, and although some have seen it as a dirty move from Ledger (to sell more Nano X), however, it was only a technical problem that took some time to resolve.

Ledger is thrilled to announce that the Ledger Live Mobile app has gone into full production today. Android 7+ users can now use their Ledger Nano S with their smartphone to not only check the balances of their crypto assets, but transact with them as well.
Due to technical limitations, iOS users can only use their Ledger Live Mobile app in consultation mode, meaning that keeping an eye on one’s balances is still possible.

I had exactly the opposite experience than most of you. I have returned my Nano X twice due to faulty battery. Both devices were discharging at nearly 1% per 1 second which is definitely not a normal behaviour. At least, the support handled the return quite fast. Despite that, the device felt pretty solid and I would use it more often if I didn't have a Trezor T which is more convenient to use.

I mean, it's over a month already + the quarantine where I didn't use the device up until now. I was surprised that it's up by 94% battery remaining.
Wouldn't you kind of expect that?  Not that I know much about the Nano X's battery, but I have a variety of power banks for emergencies, and they don't tend to lose much charge even after a few months.

Anyway, I'm hoping to own a Nano X one of these days, but as I've said in other threads I can't seem to justify the purchase when the S is working just fine for my needs.  I'm not that into altcoins and I don't think an X would offer much advantage to me--but glad you're liking it, OP.

Huh.  I'm kind of happy that the S doesn't have a battery that can go dead.

I did kind of expect that but I kind of forgot that feature. I mean most batteries that I have experienced maybe could stay around 80% but I don't know.

Thanks. If you are into traveling with your Ledger and just have your phone, you could transact using that. I can't really say for your use case but I think you could take advantage of that.

Oh dang. That's just sad. Is it up to you to ship them the device? What does it say on the warranty?

They provided me with a prepaid DHL shipping label so I only had to schedule a pickup. They didn't send me any details about the problem; they just shipped a new device. Before receiving the label, I recorded a video which clearly showed the issue.

Unlike BitCryptex, battery on my Nano X shows no such problems. But the battery is only needed when using the device in combination with Bluetooth, which is only possible with the mobile version of Ledger Live. In any other situation, an ordinary cable can be used to connect to a PC or OTG cable for wire connection, and the battery does not play any role in that case.

However, problems like this should not happen, and it is to be assumed that Ledger installed a certain percentage of defective batteries in the model X. If we know that most of the components are made in China (the body of the device), then the battery is probably "made in China" also.

Even without any defects or issues the lifespan of the Nano X's battery is probably 5, maybe 7 years tops.  I don't know if Ledger plans on having a service available to replace the battery, or everybody might be better off if they just offer a discount to those who's battery has served it's purpose.  Like Lucius alluded, however, the device can still be used long after the battery dies, just by plugging into a computer or a power source.

Thanks for sharing at least they handled it. I was actually curious about what companies will do when they have shipped a defective device. Probably they are doing some routine failure analysis on the shipped device or something. I haven't tried any Trezor device yet.

However, problems like this should not happen, and it is to be assumed that Ledger installed a certain percentage of defective batteries in the model X. If we know that most of the components are made in China (the body of the device), then the battery is probably "made in China" also.
Because it's cheaper to let it be assembled there. I don't know about these days though with all that's happening. Probably a lot of manufacturing delays or something.

Probably a discount would be favorable or probably send in a new device just pay for the shipping, lol.
