I am also one of those buy the premiums to put your character name on the top.
That was way back in 2005 where MMORPGs are booming. I didn't calculate everything I spent until the game went to an end.
It was devastating for me since I spend too much money for it.

Yes, it could have been smarter if it was put into an investment. But, at that time there are not many options and you will need a broker to help you invest.
All you could do is save money in the piggy bank. (banks have sophisticated rules)
Now, there is bitcoin. You just need the internet and you could save your money without the hassle of going to banks.

My total spent with the game I talking about estimates at $3000 - $3500. (game cards, computer rent, bot rent)

Very good!!
In reality you did a coaching gesture and the closest thing to a personal coach. The best thing that a user* that is dedicated to any type of betting activity, games (and in general any activity should have some supervision) can do is to have a third party evaluate you, and that it gives you sincere results.

In general, many are dedicated to just playing, playing, playing or entertaining, entertainment, but they do not comment with someone on their losses, their game methods, etc.

A forum or simply a chat as in your case, can help users to change their bad habits. The reflection that I have left of your OP is that you always have to be vigilant, because we do not know who can give us good information but above all good advice.

_____
User* When they justify their losses or bad investments as entertainment, it is the beginning of the road to disaster. Small justifiable expenses of $ 20- $ 40- $ 50 can turn into serious losses in the long term.

I have recently started playing a game called, "Forge of Empires" because the lockdown gave me loads of time to even play some online games. So, I joined a guild and I started talking to some of the older and more experienced players in the game and one thing lead to another and we started to talk about Bitcoin.

The player made the statement that "Bitcoin is worthless" because it is not something physical like Cash or Gold, which according to him had worth. Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Sometimes you just have to confront people with the things that are right before their eyes.  Wink  No need for you to go into arguments or to force people to buy anything, you just show them the truth and then wait for the light to come on.  Grin

Since I started playing the game, I spend ZERO money on Diamonds  Cheesy
That was a great move! I've never spent any money on online games items, but I do understand why people might feel the urge to do that. If they do, they have no reason to say Bitcoin's worthless because:
1. They can always sell it back to fiat, sometimes with losses but other times with profit.
2. They can buy real goods and services with Bitcoin, even though the options can be limited.
3. Bitcoin has a 10-year-old history which speaks largely in its favor of being valuable and even more so with time, whereas the games most likely don't.
As for questions about Bitcoin being an investment vs money, I think in the context of the parallel with in-game currency it's quite clear that Bitcoin should be seen as a currency as well.

The guys wouldn't know about his bad spend choice/habit if you had engaged him hardly or approached him wrongly. Good thing he is seeing the bright side now and I hope he reduce the amount he's spending on entertainment and maybe change other of his gaming friends perspective on spending on entertainment because I'm very sure he isn't the only one doing that.

As for questions about Bitcoin being an investment vs money, I think in the context of the parallel with in-game currency it's quite clear that Bitcoin should be seen as a currency as well.

I just want to make it clear again (This was not mentioned in my opening post) Bitcoin can be a Commodity/Investment option, but it was developed to be a Currency. So, if you buy Bitcoin for an investment, you would be taking a risk, because all investments come with risk.

The main message that I wanted to give here was this, :

1. People judge Bitcoin based on misinformation.
2. People spend their money on something that are mostly worthless (like in-game items & tokens) and then they critisize Bitcoin for being worthless.
3. There are better ways to spend your money and time. (or some of it)
4. Aggressive arguments and fighting will not influence people to buy bitcoins.

Now, let's also make something very clear, I am not saying it is wrong to spend some of your money on entertainment, because we should enjoy life with the things that interest you.

I also wasted 1000's of hours on gaming (Starcraft / Mud games / Counter-strike / Dune etc.... ) but at one stage you will have to measure your inputs into these games (money & time) and decide if that is the best way to do it.

Can you spend a little bit less time and money on those things (start small with say 20% less) and use that time to research new technologies and experimenting with that to increase your knowledge and also to possibly invest in your future. (You might find a job in Crypto currencies or your coins might increase in value)  Wink

You can turn to be an influencer right now tbh. Damn that logic got me so hard. It may have made him an investor instead of a user, but nonetheless, it's a step forward imo. I mean, most of us probably started with BTC as an investment instead of a cryptocurrency. Maybe that's just me but still, cause of learning investment, I basically learned about what BTC is not as an investment, which in turn made me support it right now.

Probably change the idea of wasted to spent instead since imo, no time is wasted. Just like how the guy from your friend learned about BTC while playing, there are a lot of things you can learn from playing games. Whether it be to your mind, to your social circle, to your skills, it isn't a waste. It would be a waste if you consider it as one, since your basically killing off what can be described as one of your strengths.

The actual funny thing is, the way that this guy is "investing" is not the right way to do it, but rather the lazy way to do it. You never just dump X amount of money into bitcoin on a set schedule. He would be better off setting aside the money weekly and then buying when the price goes down. (The old saying, buy the dip and sell on the high)

I did give him this advice, but he says he does not have the dicipline to hoard the cash. If it gets too much, he will spend it. In anyways, it is not about the investing, but rather the shift in his believe of the technology that counts.  Wink

People just need to realize that there are better things to invest in, they think a small amount of cash won't mean anything, spending everyday for things not that important habitually.
Saving a dollar a day is definitely worth it.
This will be a reminder to all.

I hope those people I talked about it are like that. They think, they accept that mistakes and make something out of it but in my case, no. I could say that most of the people I talked about bitcoin are egotistical that if they don't want to, they don't want to. They don't want to accept that they have their mistakes where they should have a profit but they don't. If they think it is a scam, they'll die thinking like that, that kind of people. Some changed but they never even talked about it to me, I just found it in an exchange where they are sending btcs to other people, most of them stayed the same.

Always remember, it is not our duty to force people to adopt this technology. We show them where they might be mistaken about something and we plant the seed for something more to happen.

People do not like to be told what is good or bad for them, they want to brag to their friends that they discovered something by themselves. We plant the seed and water it and if the ground is good, the plant will grow.  Wink

Some people plant weed (misinformation) and we remove and destroy those weeds with the truth.  Grin

That is just nice. Well, I am not actually forcing them to use or adapt the technology, it is just that we end up in that conversation and they went to say that bitcoin is a scam, it is something being controlled by a group that will take the money of the users, something like that. I just can't stop being quiet and we end up in this debate and they can't just accept they are wrong, apparently, they are bad in debating too.

As I have said before, there is no reason to force the issue. Once you force the issue or you want to push a new technology down someones throat, you already lost the debate. Look at their concerns and digest it and then find a way to switch on the light, so that they can see Bitcoin from a new angle.

Someone once told me Bitcoin is a Ponzi scheme and I asked him what he understands under the concept of a Ponzi scheme and then I realized that he did not understand what it was all about. I then explained to him how a Ponzi scheme worked (because I have had previous experience of Ponzi schemes) and then explained why Bitcoin was not a Ponzi scheme, based on those facts.

You win people's confidence with your knowledge about the technology and how you present it, not by forcing the issue.  Wink

That was a nice decision for him when he actually cut his game expenses to 50% and the other half will go to Bitcoin. since the money is for entertainment, he doesn't feel the pressure of checking the price of bitcoin in the market every day. If people think like him, I'm sure every extravagance will come to something useful when they convert it to bitcoin than buying things that they don't really need in their lives. Some people have cut his alcohol expenses and others have stopped smoking for some sensible reasons. What if they consider buying bitcoin like this man did?

I have recently started playing a game called, "Forge of Empires" because the lockdown gave me loads of time to even play some online games. So, I joined a guild and I started talking to some of the older and more experienced players in the game and one thing lead to another and we started to talk about Bitcoin.

The player made the statement that "Bitcoin is worthless" because it is not something physical like Cash or Gold, which according to him had worth. Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

I then proceeded to debate this issue by asking him a couple of questions. My first question was... "How much money do you spend on the diamonds that you use within this game" - His answer : About $20 per week.  Shocked

I followed that question with my second question, "How long have you been playing this game and spending that money on Diamonds? - His answer : "Hmmmm well, since about 2015"

I quickly made some rough calculations :   $20/week x 4 weeks x 12 months = $960 per year x 5 years =  $4800 spend on buying Diamonds for that game.

He never made that calculation, because he said it was from his entertainment budget, but he was amazed that it was that much. I then asked him.. Do you think those Diamonds are worth anything? (Would anyone buy your Diamonds or account for $4800?) - His answer : Definitely not.  Tongue

I then said... Well, do you think if you spend that money on buying bitcoins that it would have been worth anything now? His answer : Yea.. I think I get what you are saying now.

This guy are now buying $10 worth of bitcoins weekly and still spending $10 on his Diamonds for the game. He send me a screenshot of his bitcoin balance and he is very proud of this investment.

It is difficult for us to determine the fixed value of bitcoin in the cryptocurrency market. It can be considered as a non-profit currency. Its value changes rapidly depending on the market and investors. If you are lucky, when you buy bitcoin at a low price until you sell it can be 10 times more than the original. In a game there is always chance. That is also interesting.

That was a nice realization you made to him,

Instead of wasting his money on a game without gaining or expecting any return after a couple of years, investing the money to bitcoin is really the best option. We can't determine its value in the future but the good thing is, he can save more than enough for his own needs in the future.

I was actually amazed at that part where he said he has been buying 10 dollars worth of bitcoins everytime he has the chance to do it. I mean that is one good strategy to get bitcoins and that is to invest and buy at low volume. I actually wonder and was curious where he can buy 10 dollars worth of bitcoin. Do exchanges do that now? My impression is you needs large amounts like 100 dollars or 1000 dollars to be able to buy bitcoin. Can someone help me out where to buy in low volumes or low amounts?
