I was hoping to get some advice as I am brand new to crypto and trading. So if I have bought an Altcoin or bitcoin at a higher price than it is now should I sell and buy the dip or does crypto not work like that? I am trying to find the best way to start making small profits.

It depends on some of factors.

1. Are you actually day trading? or making a short term trade?
2. Why did you buy that coin in the first place?
3. If you bought a certain coin at a higher price and the price lowers then you sell, well, that's automatically a loss. Sure, you can buy when it dips, but what if it dips lower? The point is, we can't guarantee where the prices will go.

Ultimately, if you're new to trading, prepare to initially have LOTS of losses. If you're not willing to do a lot of reading and research and if you're not willing to risk your money at the start of your trading journey as it's almost guarantee for you to lose money in the beginning, then maybe think twice with your plans.

Not to discourage you though, just to keep things realistic, and so you wouldn't be surprised if you aren't doing well at the start.

I initially started trading in late 2018 and put a couple hundred into Bitoin and some Alts. I then let the chips fall where they may and didn't look back into Crypto up until a few months ago. I currently still hold some Neo and Bitcoin. I chose Neo because I like their roadmap and think they can be something in the future. Even though I am not BRAND new, there is still a lot for me to learn regarding day trading which I have only attempted a few times and, as you say, have lost plenty so I highly prefer short term trading. I don't have too much left in crypto so I am very comfortable trading at this point as even if I lose it all it's not a huge deal for me.

its the basics. if you bought an altcoin for 0.00001BTC it has to be more than 0.00001BTC when you sell this altcoin otherwise youre not accumulating BTC. same applies for USD price. buying the coin for $1 and selling it for more than $1.  

you will only have to learn when to buy because it doesn't look that easy as it may sound. some of us will teaches you the bottom or at every dip. but how to learn which is the bottom and the dip. RSI is actually a good indicator to use for this.

NEO is a good project to invest. profitable for long term because it gives GAS if you stake NEO.



there is a chance for the coin to drop to $7 if it retrace back to retracement line 75 and its RSI says the price is over bought which is could go down to $7.
don't think of it as a real analysis from a pro, this is base to my analysis alone. but once the RSI reaches to its lowest like the green line i draw, that would be the bottom of it and that means a good time to buy more NEO.

always buy in deep but make sure you choose a good coins before buying , not all coins has ability to recover back the lost they get from the dump so make sure you always check the coins before buying.

It can work like that buy lower and sell high but the problem is you don't know when its time to buy or it is the last deep of the coins  that's why you need to have available balance that you can use to buy every time there is another deep happen.

Based on how you currently described your situation my guess is what you are trying to say is if averaging down with cryptocurrency is possible? If that is what you are asking the question is it depends on you. Are you willing to take a paper loss and still continue to buy the same asset for a better margin of safety? If you are you can average down right now and hold Bitcoin at a loss temporarily. Keep in mind that this is really not a common method since people tend to the what is best which is shorting the crypto asset which aside from giving you some profit you will also buy them at a cheaper price with a bigger capital from your gain. If you have the ability to short crypto assets right now I would recommend you on doing that.

Thanks so much for showing me this! I honestly had no idea what RSI was before now lol! This really helps to determine when to sell. I'm going to take some time to make sure that I properly understand how the chart works as well. CryptoCompare seems to have a good one.

It will be difficult in your case to understand easily the crypto trading dude. Actually, its too easy to apply to buy and to sell, but it doesn't mean you can easily earn crypto as well. Of course not, That's why in trading it needs analysis before you take action for us to earn good in the end. One of the simplest ways to trade in my opinion is to reserve some funds in stablecoin for buying dips.
Let say you start with total of $200 on a safe exchange, you buy some bitcoin with $50 and leave the remaining $150 in a stablecoin for buying more bitcoins whenever the price dips substantially, then gradually sell off what you bought (if you want) as price goes up... buy again if price goes down substantially.

Obviously the long term trading is the best suit for beginners coz they got need some time to learn how to cope with this volatile market, it is good to keep coins while learning so they will know what to do when their coin needs to evacuate. Then slowly try to change strategy and tradings style. For day trading I'd recommend the future trading, the risk is high but the reward is higher especially when putting it on high leverage. Trading might come short to beginner, they will surely lose at first (mostly) but that's the hard way of learning and it is good.

What are you comparing to? The stock exchange? It's basically the same, it's just the asset that is different. Anyway, there's a strategy called DCA (Dollar Cost Averaging). You could take advantage of that but you need more capital.

If you bought 1 bitcoin at around $10000 and the current price is $9800, you are already down by -2%. That means the entry price that you have is $10000.

If you bought it again at $9800. The average entry price would be $9900. Averaging the two entry points

Then let's say the price went $9500 and you bought again, the average entry price is 9766.67.

And when the price of Bitcoin comes back at $9800, you would be in profit already. That's just one of the strategies that you could do. Making it automatic is better. In addition, the best way to make profits in trading is to be the Market Maker. It trades continuously and you could make money out of the trading rebates. Well if you are prepared to ride it out based from your findings you gave in the OP I'm afraid that's a bad way of analyzing price predicting, you are more speculating rather than do any kind of analyzing itself. Just like how people predicted that Bitcoin will FOMO just because of the halving, and we all have witness that nothing spectacular has happened. This is just one example of one kind of event doesn't lead into some price action that's why you should not always stick one event and assume it will benefit the price.

Buy low Sell high - a simple term but difficult to execute. Basically, this will be your purpose if you are aiming for profits either for the long or short term.

This will be your task so you really need to make up your own strategy. For reference, you can watch trading tutorials as a start. You need to feed your mind first with some basics. As you proceed, you will now finally think up of your own way then test it by applying in actual trade.

I can't tell you exactly what approach you need to do as we have different ways to deal with the market. That's why as I mentioned, watch trading basics first to somehow get a preview of what will you encounter along the way.

Well, the reason I am sticking with it is because I trust in Neo. I did sell some earlier today which was a good move and I am currently waiting on a dip. I have been trying to get better on reading the charts too though but I don't know how helpful they can really be as Bitcoin itself and obviously Altcoins are so volatile. I've been trying to find trends using charts and graphs but have been unsuccessful

There is no an instant way to understood something new especially bitcoin or crypto currency as a whole. You may need a long time to know it. So I hope you will always active on this forum and read some thread thay you need to know also you can google because there are a lot of article already about crypto currency.

In your case, I don't know your intention to buy bitcoin before you know how it works and know the culture of its price. Because in my strategy I won't be tempted to buy everything before I know the ins and out against stuff that I will buy, so I can make a plan and considering the risk thag will be faced.

There are different techniques on selling an asset when you're about to lose a trade, I understand your point on the advice you give but it's hard to understand if you give a value of a loss without giving what the base capital is.

For OP who buy an asset at a bad time and price, You should estimate the possibilities on what will happen next, This is why trading experience is important because you should know how to analyze the charts and to know when to buy and sell. Before buying you should make up your mind on what capital loss can you handle when a dip happens so that you won't be pressured when the situation you now happen again.

Better you hold for a while because that doesn't mean you will see the price will be down for more. Sometimes, the price can move like that, but after that, the price will be increased. But that depends on how big the supply and demand at the market.

You need to avoid from go all-in in trading so if you face that moment, and you still have money to buy bitcoin at another low price. That will be related to money management that you will use in trading. When you see the price is down, you can prepare to buy more amount, but at the other time, you can prepare to sell if the price can increase in the next few hours.

Before starting trading, keep learning and use demo trades for some time. Learn some strategy and then make out the plan as how much amount you will invest, trade etc. Also diversify you trades in different coins rather than just be concentrating on one coin.

Trading only become risky if we do not have knowledge about how it works, for newbies who mostly want to start trading; it is better on doing some virtual trade first. I know there is a thread before on virtual trade where you  can practice using virtual money. Trading is a process so expect that you cannot learn all of information in just weeks. There are a lot of things that you need to learn especially the core of the technical analysis which is identifying the trend and reading the chart.

Welcome to forum first. As you are new in trading you should not go for lose at the beginning so that you may lost mentality of trading here. If you buy a token that price down, you should wait for sometime for market up and in the mean time you can make research market for another coin. For newbies, I think you should only use the smallest capital possible and should focus on the experience. Many new traders now want to make quick money and their results are losing a lot of money and becoming desperate. During the first 2 years, should use only small capital and learn more. Youtube and Google are your best friends to find and learn more about the basics of cryptocurrency trading. However, the information that you'll find in some videos aren't that complete from A to Z.

They might be helpful for us, but their information is not so deep at all. They have a landing page where they offer trading courses and trading for you either on a one-off or monthly subscription. However, most of these cryptocurrency trading "gurus" have overpriced courses.

You need to look for complete and affordable crypto trading online course platforms such as NewsCrypto, Udemy, TraderCobb or Trading Heroes to start your journey to become a skilled trader.

Thank you all for your great advice here. I have a lot to learn about trading and what to do to start making profit but I think it will be fun to educate myself on these topics. Hope to be able to come back on here to talk about my success in the future. 

Before starting trading, keep learning and use demo trades for some time. Learn some strategy and then make out the plan as how much amount you will invest, trade etc. Also diversify you trades in different coins rather than just be concentrating on one coin.

What I like with exchanges right now is that they are acquiring the demo trading feature on their platform, not for us that is already familiar of the market though but for those who want to test drive the cryptocurrency trading. Way back then, there are only several trading platforms that has demo trade feature that is maybe why lot of people tend to lose when they first enter the market without practice. Diversify the trade? what do you mean by this, I only know diversification of assets, it sounds like really risky for me.

If you have high level of belief in it then go with your gut. Its better to be mentally stable about one coin than try to change to other coins. However you have to learn to do that and change assets because it is what makes a good trader, they have to be emotionally cold.

I did sell some earlier today which was a good move and I am currently waiting on a dip. I have been trying to get better on reading the charts too though but I don't know how helpful they can really be as Bitcoin itself and obviously Altcoins are so volatile. I've been trying to find trends using charts and graphs but have been unsuccessful

See the past charts and how it goes down and goes back up. Compare this with the market capitalization, how much money is being pumped into the market and how much is begin pulled out. Bitcoin charts can also indicate the upcoming changes in altcoin because they seem to follow bitcoin wherever it goes. Check out some books on stock market analysis too, those who have a background of stock market trading have a better outcome here too.

I will reiterate that putting your coins in altcoins is actually a bad choice for a long term valuation. Bitcoin obviously shines here. Gradually you will also understand.

It won't help if you sell it now. Bitcoin price will soon to rise back, a little patient can do to rescue. I suggest you not to pay attention the declining sentiment of the market price, it only seduces you to sell. If you have some back-up money in your pocket, make it reserve for the next drop. I can agree with you 100%. Always try to diversify your portfolio and never go all-in in 1 coin. Only invest money that you are willing to loose.
Have some cash available when there is a drop, I always put a limit order in.

Are you new to crypto trading or trading itself? Because, you sound like you are complete newbie for entire trading field. If I am correct, please take time to educate yourself and then try to trade cryptos. If you are a busy person then you may buy bitcoins alone and keep holding it for next 12 to 18 months to get some bigger profits. Do not try trading altcoins without sufficient knowledge about predicting the market directions; else you may get trapped by market fluctuations.

The term never goes all in is kind of wrong but rather it should be only trade what you can trade. Don't use all of your assets. Always remember that what you've traded can already be considered as lost money, so only trade the amount that would not compromise your everyday life in any way. Not going all in still means to invest as much as possible, only leaving money for emergency after all.

I agree with trading always takes course over a few years. I remember seeing an article about a trader about to get it into the names of one of the few millionaires in the world by having a small investment into trading which he made into millions in eight years. That's a long time but in trading, that's still around the short end imo.

There are only two ways that will help you in trading.
1. Reading&Watching trading tutorials, strategies and techniques. Don't depend on signals because most of them are not really helpful.
2. Experience, you can learn in experience because everything that you failed before can be a lesson to your life. If you lose 2k dollars in trading, I think you will think of a good move for your next trades.

If your plan is to make a small profit daily then you will have to be going into day trading; it seems like you're into investment and investment takes some time. I am not saying that investment is not good, they are all good, and what you have to do is to plan yourself and know when to start investing. And once you invest in cryptocurrency, you have to have patience and wait till the right time for the price to increase and you will make profit.

As for day trading, it is not like that, you can be making profit daily. Day trading is the most difficult and I wouldn't recommend it to someone that's still new. You may skip day trading completely for all your life time like many people are already doing. Day trading is good only when you got whale like capital to manipulate the market direction.

users who says buy the dip are the ones who accumulate coins every time the price dips. rule of thumb is to sell your coins for a higher price. higher from the price where you bought it for you to profit which is why most are just waiting for price pumps before selling. you can also do the same, it keeps you waiting but usually it won't take weeks for prices to spike or dip for more than 2%.

Well it's quite simple here. You don't have too many options.

The only options to earn a profit are

1. Sell quickly and buy back at further lower price so that you can sell it back at a higher price to make a profit
2. wait until the coin's price goes higher than your buying price so that you make a profit

If you want to cut your losses you can sell quickly so that you don't suffer huge loss.

If you are looking for making short term profits in small amount then first thing you need to do is learn about technical analysis, without it is impossible to identify or get an idea about the market movement then pick an exchange where the fee is less, basically binance will be a good option for every coin then start buying coins with your bitcoin and sell them on that day itself so you can make 2-3% per day.

Normally when you are trading when the price plummets, like seriously almost 30-50% drops on the price, that is the exact time you should buy. The price drops from 12k to 6k? Buy it, even if it continues to drop to $3k after that, keep buying it, buy as much as you can afford.

Eventually it will go to $7-9k range once again and you will profit. This doesn't happen all the time, it happens maybe once or twice a year and that's it, so you are not going to suddenly become rich and do not expect to anyway, this is not a get rich quick scheme. That is probably the only method that has very low risk but also a good return of profit as well.

Mate, if you sell your coins that you bought at a higher price than what it is now, I do not think you need anyone to tell you are losing with such trade. Where is the profit when you're selling a product below its cost price? There is nothing there and you will be losing.

It is best for you to just leave it there since you have already lost money, just leave it till things gets better. If you sell now the price might end up increasing and you will miss out on the opportunity to make profit. So, relax and wait. The OP should always remind himself about the simple rule of trading - buy low, sell high.
So even if you are new in trading, that rule is very simple and straightforward.
If you buy for example btc at $8k, of course you need to sell it above $8k to gain profit.
And not sell it below $8k even if there will be panic selling in the market.
You should follow your instincts and not be emotionally affected by others.
As long as you are following that simple rule, I don't think you will incur big losses in trading.
