For bitcoin there is Bitcoin Core which downloads the whole blockchain a few hundred gigabytes then you can use the wallet.

For Ethereum, there used to be a wallet. I have done a backup of the key stores but now I am trying to download that classic wallet but I can't find a download link.

The only nearest thing I found was MyEtherWallet (MEW) but then there is no Download button anywhere on their website, and even whien i try the software version it says Not recommended:
https://www.myetherwallet.com/access-my-wallet

Any help how to get access to a wallet using the backup keystores from the "old"/"classic" wallet?

You can use MetaMask, for access to your wallet you would need private key or backup and your password. But I do not think that there is a classic fullnode wallet like we know it from BTC.

I found several articles about full Ether nodes and wallet
https://github.com/ethereum/mist/releases
https://docs.ethhub.io/using-ethereum/running-an-ethereum-node/
I do not really understand the classic node wallet ethereum, but please examine the link above. I'm just giving an idea, danger or not, maybe you are more aware because I haven't tried it myself. Sorry if i wrong about that.

Bitcoin core is not an official wallet of bitcoin, it just most trusted wallet which need full node to run an application so for ethereum also you can download the trusted wallets like MEW or hardware wallets.

think that OP has a very good question here about ethereum wallets , is it something you need to stake ethereum when ethereum 2.0 is coming out or can you stake ethereum also with any online wallet like metamask and etherscan? , never had an official wallet for ethereum

There are numerous Ethereum wallwts available bith on mobile and desktop. Metamask is one of the best but I use Imtoken more. There is also Trust wallet and Eidoo wallet. These are wallets that are compatible with all tokens issued on Ethereum not just Ether alone.

You can use metamask add-on for an internet browser app like chrome, just download metamask in your add on then you can export your own wallet using private key, json file. Or if you want to download mobile eth wallet app, you can use imtoken.

visit mycrypto.com and download it. it's a desktop wallet that will make you able to access your wallet use the vintage version while MEW has already removed this feature due to the security problem.

I guess that will make able to use your old keystore.

Thanks I downloaded the MyCrypto Desktop app and it restored my wallet from the keystore.

So how come MyCrypto can do it similar to the old Mist wallet but MEW winges about Software and like you said it claims it has been dicontinued because it is not secure?

Mycrypto is nothing but an app created by the members who separated themselves from MEW in the recent days.So its more like a similar to MEW and got some added features which is not available yet in MEW.But there is nothing called an official wallet for electrum.

Well, mew have android version of their app but I don't know if iphone is also supported. Sad thing is you can only add eth wallet using only recovery phrase. There are other eth wallet like trustwallet. Same as bitcoin you can download electrum also support mobile phones version.

Sadly, there is no decent desktop wallet for etehreum.
You have to use those shitful and insecure  wallets such as MEW and Metamask. Those browser wallets are terrible IMO, as they are much more susceptible to attacks than desktop wallets such as electrum.

I always though how come a blockchain that doesn't even have a desktop wallet can be successful...

To me, going through myetherwallet iaba rather tedious way, and for newbies with little knowledge you could enter the wrong webpage unknowingly

The bets Way to download an etherum wallet is to get either trust or imtoken 2.0 wallet.
It is available on both android and ios applications store

There are many options for us to have an account wallet for Ethereum, one of these is Trust Wallet, Metamask, Coinomi, or myetherwallet. But most commonly useful to me are Trust and myetherwallet. I had been using these two for a couple of years now. Then, the rest that I had mentioned at the above was also good to use too.

if the purpose for the wallet transaction you mentioned is good enough I also use Metamask, myetherwallet and Trust Wallet, but not for Coinomi because there are many cases in Coinomi wallet that I know of, but if the purpose of saving in the long term is better to use wallet hardware, like nano, trezor and other ledger

I have been using myetherwallet for 2 and a half years now but to tell you honestly, I don't know how to access it without my private key, as I see other options to access it and wait, I have been trying to send tokens or ETH to other wallets using the site but I guess it is not working now. Currently, I am using metamask and it is easy to use too. Does anyone got the same problem? or it is only working using app? as far as I know there is an app for MEW

I'm using Ledger for storing my Ethereums so if I understood it correctly, you want a wallet that downloads the whole Ethereum blockchain.

Look into this.

Any help how to get access to a wallet using the backup keystores from the "old"/"classic" wallet?
Do you mean the vintage one? I also use vintage MEW. But now, Vintage MEW has migrated to MEW (new MEW) since 20 October 2019
First, do you still have the private key? Or only saving the Keystore?

From what I have read on the https://kb.myetherwallet.com/en/migration/importing-vintagemew-to-mew/
Quote
Here you are able to access the same wallet you used on the Vintage version of our site, through the same method.
There you can also find the completed information about Vintage MEW migration to the new one.

Go to "https://www.myetherwallet.com/access-my-wallet"
here, you need to find this menu and there are some options to choose to access your wallet.

To use the keystores, it is said "Not Recommended" because:

Quote
NOT RECOMMENDED

This is not a recommended way to access your wallet. Due to the sensitivity of the information involved, these options should only be used in offline settings by experienced users.

However, as I remind is that in the vintage MEW, it is also not recommended to use PK, Keywstores, or other software in accessing the MEW. They more suggest us to use the "Offline wallet" or other three options above.

Not recommended doesn't mean that you cannot access the wallet. You can still access it, but it is on your risk because it may be risky of hack or other. But so far, I personally use this way to access my MEW, access by software (mostly using Private Key or "Keystore+password")

The way to access even your vintage wallet is by importing your Keystore and then continued by entering your "Password". After accessing your wallet, I will suggest you import the "Private Key". For, this can be easily used to access your ERC20 wallet from other platforms such as Metamask and others. Here, save your PK securely.

But, if you want to access your wallet more securely, you can use the other ways as I attached above, it can be using MEWconnect Protocol, Access by Hardware, and Access via MetaMask. I think that Access via MetaMask is the easiest way so far I do, of course I have the private key to access on Metamask easier.

Actually, there is also a MEW application on Google Store and App Store so that you can also use this.

MyCrypto desktop app is not "remembering" my wall.

1. I click on the MytCrypto shortcut on the desktop
2. I get a screen "How would you like to access your wallet?"
3. I select Keystore File
4. I click Select Wallet and I choose the keystore file I have backed up from the old Mist
5. I enter the password and I see my Account address and balance.

I exit the app.

I start it again, same thing I have to load the wallet every time. In the old Mist it rememebred the wallet, am I doing anything wrong?
