Have you ever thought about playing a mmorpg with cryptocurrency/Bitcoin involved?

I was a hardcore mmorpg during my teenage years, and played several role playing games. Lately, I was thinking about how would an online game (not a blockchain based game built on Eth or other pure cryptocurrency based MMO's) would be different from the usual trades of in game currency to adding digital money like Bitcoin.

I found one interesting mmorpg posted on steemit called Dragons Tale which literally has everything when we're talking about Bitcoin engagement inside the game. But, one thing I dislike about choosing a game is the graphic and movement, skills animations. I always prefer, mixed martial art and sword slashing games like 9Dragons, SilkRoad Online, Cabal Online, and etc.

I'm imagining about placing real Bitcoin bets in an individual/group duel, or even Siege wars or guild wars.
Selling/Buying rare items in a market place where you can opt to purchase or sell the item in Bitcoin, with this initiative, players will have the opportunity to actually buy the item in a cheaper price in number when Bitcoin pumps, or sell in a higher number when Bitcoin dips.

Share your thoughts, specially If you're a mmorpg gamer.

P.s I was once a gamer, but since I started working, I stopped playing and It's been almost 6 years already. Though, I always loved to play again, I just dont have enough playing time because of the priorities at work and family.

I have saw some projects/basing up on mmorpg making game but didnt able to succeed.Even other blockchain based games in ETH platform
doesnt really get that much of attention thats why they do failed up mid-way.Im also a player of 9dragon/cabal online wayback- it would be nice
if there would be someone who do consider on making up some integration with crypto to a mmo game.

Most of the types of game I played, MMORPG is the best for me, which I already played the most of my time.
For me, it's kinda difficult to combine gambling with the use of Bitcoin inside the game especially if it's MMORPG.
Because as you are the game developer or owner, you will consider some gamers that will play your game. Not all of them want to gamble, they just want to play the game.
That's why there is some sportsbook there that acts as a third party for people who want to gamble by playing games, just like eSports nowadays which is already popular. But here, you are relying on someone skills, not yours, I think it is the only big difference there.

I was once also an MMORPG gamer but lost passion due to the new genre of games that came out and having a busy life. I think that idea you have brought is only possible if one or a group of passionate developers with a decent budget to make this kind of economy in-game.

I'm also looking for that kind of game and after looking at the graphics of Dragon's Tale, I now understand why you're disappointed with them and I've read that they have stopped. But at least, there's already a game that started it. A community that will agree to support something like this is possible if there's unity.

I have seen before game projects that relate to blockchain and have their in-game currency in the token type but didn't succeed. The interest might not be great as of now but, we don't know within the next few years.

^ I find it really interesting, playing an online game with bitcoin betting then I can no longer consider it as an online game instead it is already online gambling because for me any games that bring entertainment to the player and of something that has value will be at stakes like money or bitcoin then it is gambling. The idea of using bitcoin in purchasing something in an online game is not bad at all for it it can expand the range of usage of bitcoin and more people will realize and embrace it that will sort out for global adoption. I, too, am a fan of MMORPGs, and have not played in them for quite some time. Unfortunately, most of these games have their own internal currency, like chips in a casino.
In my opinion, the easiest solution would be to introduce the ability to buy in-game currency using cryptocurrencies, such as bitcoin.
However, in this case, we are faced with possible fraud in money laundering by criminals.

Simple, why should it be? Game developers will not profit for adding Bitcoin as a game currency. The purpose is to buy in-game currency that can be used to buy in-game items and equipment. That's where the game's revenue will come.

What we should hope is that more MMORPG should add Bitcoin to its payment method. Looking at how it progress these days, there are lots of ways now to top-up game credits via Bitcoin.

And most of the gamers were really want only playing the games because its fun and excited, went you compare it with some playing game who only focuses on the bet and their service. The games always kinda crappy without a good graphic makes me so boring went playing the games. Instance, playing MMORPG with a craphy and ugly interface better to do a tournament from favorite MMORPG by using bitcoin as the fee tournament.

I was also an avid MMORPG gamer back in the day. Specifically Runescape and Warcraft, but I have grown out of it now. Or maybe life beat it out of me, who knows.

I would definitely love to see a game that genuinely incorporates cryptocurrencies as the in-game currency and allows people to trade between one another, either for in-game items or real ones. However, I doubt any major game studio wants to open that can of worms, due to the crazy amounts of money laundering that could occur.

That said, would be nice to play some games of gwent in the Witcher with a few friends, while playing for real money (Bitcoin) of course

If bitcoin will be used in an online game as a wager then I think I would be the first bettor because I already imagine that years ago for these online games are really entertaining and a lot of people are getting obsessed on these games if betting with bitcoin will be allowed then it is an additional thrill.

In fact, there are tournaments being held for these online games and to think of it there is still a prize that is at stakes and to some before they can even join they need to pay an ample amount as registration fee so that being said it is also like gambling among the players. Bitcoin betting on the players is not a bad idea if gamblers can bet to their favorite player or team in a sport then it can also be applied in an online game.

I've also been a game addict before which I mostly played MMORPG and MOBA games. My teen days where almost all about games, I spend time most of the time on playing games which don't really pay off because I didn't achieve anything but experience.

Actually, because of the game Dota, I learned how to bet, I use the dota2lounge before which is one of the most reliable betting sites on the Dota 2 platform, Being addicted to betting take a part of me being a gambling addict. I think there's a use of bitcoin on dota2 because some players are trading their item into equal bitcoin value, My friend is a middle man on Dota 2 transaction and he said that he got his experience with cryptocurrency because of the transaction he process.

One of the main problems on where the game developer/owner would really experience when in talks of possible money laundering via means on gaming medium yet most likely this would really be possible.

There were quite a few games that tried this formula though in the recent shape of the scene today, I don't think MMORPG with real-money and bet elements would simply go undetected by the government. It has to procure several licenses since what you have in mind can be a vehicle for money laundering and fraud which the government hate so much. Also, this would be a pretty obvious pay-to-win game due to the structure and involvement of real-world money on the events and other thing inside the game.

It's a cool idea since I myself am still a hardcore MMORPG player, though I don't think it will pan out that well nor will be appealing to people. Not everyone is into MMO as well, so that's another area to think about.

Interesting question - I've seen (but haven't played) some First Person assault rifle shoot 'em ups where you and you team play against others - along the way you find and open caches which may contain coins weapons or ammo.  The "coins" were your reward and could only be used to either upgrade weapons, armour etc (you can even on sell the weapons found on an in-house auction site for "coins" - I'd heard these coins we actually on an in-house block chain, so there's no reason any MERP / NetHack / Rogue multiplayer game site couldn't be adapted to accept crypto.

As with the above, you might find it's easier to buy in to an in house crypto for game play so that you can leave game coins there and not have to keep topping up or cashing out all the time.

Yeah, I haven't thought It would become a ground for money laundering  , but yeah that made sense and the probability is really high.
It could also become a pay to win kind of structure like most of the games in mobile versions, and other players have switched to MOBA and Battle Royal type of game already, unlike before where everyone was playing Mmorpg.
This concept seems "almost" impossible like everybody in this thread are agreeing to. However, It would really gives us a kind of excitement when we're talking about real money bets in duels and guild wars right? Usually we are using in game currency like golds, silver or copper to raise a wager to battle different clan/guild in a tournament.

But, the difference is, they are raising bets outside the gaming platform. However, this is a good way of enjoying the tournament for you to give your full potential, because there's a money involved  .

So you're basically wanting a game where a currency that is controlled by the real world is used as is, without an in-game currency being used? You can try and see how Albion online adopted their own in game currency that is being controlled by the players themselves. Ofc, at the beginning, the system may have added some support to it to accommodate the low amount of players there is, but right now the market of gold (the in-game currency I was talking about) is pretty good now and pretty balanced.

This shouldn't happen, what a broken game that would be. They basically failed to incorporate the volatility of the market they used and not to mention, this could be a third party interference to the BTC market where intentional manipulation could plenty much happen. That is if enough users are met to mess with the system.

I'm afraid the operator will need some license if the game involves real money and gambling.

Anyway, I like the concept where users can do in-game transactions with crypto similar to the steam marketplace; even better users can pay money for services like joining a guild and help fighting bosses.

During the past years a lot of games that were integrated in ETH blockchain took place.
However, I cannot see any of them being still viable or being in the light.
It will be a huge step for crypto integration but I don't think that people are ready to adopt it. Payments and bets in games still happen easier with fiat.

I think similar games mixed with betting already exists in Crypto world. I have seen couple of posts here on the forum promoting them. I am not sure if i have come across the violent ones or I probably don't remember due to my lack of interest in them. I am more interested in those I can apply in real life, like competition on farming, city construction, cryptocurrency trading, safe survival games etc.
I honestly don't want to waste alot of time playing and betting on games that won't benefit me in real life. If I fail to win a bet, the information/knowledge acquired from the game will still be very useful for me in real life.  I prefer not to gamble with my money and time... I personally love MMORPGs in my earlier years but what always put me off is the hundreds of cheats or bots,,, plus how they all eventually become pay to win games. Essentially they stop writing good stories and then force everyone to pay to keep up with everyone else. Not a good way to waste hours of my life.

Putting in Bitcoin as a way to earn might actually encourage the scammers/cheaters/bots,,, that is my feeling.

I am not yet aware of this Dragon Tale but if their sole option for payments is only bitcoin then I don't think the game will not earn profits faster than the usual. Because they just depend on the recent adopters only. Gamers which are unaware of bitcoin would either find a hard time to cope with this new tech or most probably just choose to ignore and never buy because of hassle. Imagine the opportunities being wasted. So I guess much better if they also include fiat options .

Hhmm, buying and selling in-game items with the use of bitcoin is cool. You are right! I'm sure that all the players will become bounty hunters seaching for the rarest items in exchange of bitcoin lol . But on the other hand, I don't think using it for betting is a good idea. If ever implemented, it seems that the game devs are encouraging the teenagers or even kids to enagage with gambling (when there's a money related, it is now called gambling IMO). That's a bad example.

You missed some ideas with the concept that op discussed. It's still an online game because there's economy but the game currency can be sort of crypto and it could be bitcoin or any accepted altcoin.

The idea of betting is just when you're entering through a PvP zone room or area. And this is usual in MMORPG games. So the essence of the game being a game isn't gone, the feature of betting through your opponent is an added feature which isn't bad.

It's impossible to see that some game developers will consider bitcoin as the game's main currency in an MMORPG game with the same level as some of the known MMORPG games today. It's like saying, implementing fiat as main currency on the game. In-game currency should always be control by the game devs since they are controlling the economy there to prevent further increase or decrease of some items or materials. And aside from that, that's where the game gets their profit or revenue to support maintenance and other spendings as mostly, in-game currencies can be bought by real money.

For other cryptos, I see lots of projects already attempt to implement crypto on the game but unfortunately, most of them failed. Rather than implementing crypto in a game itself, these games should accept bitcoin and other cryptos for top-up purchases. In that way, gamers have lots of options to buy game credits. This was actually already implemented on some crypto local exchanges like here e.g Razer PIN, using bitcoin to top-up load and used it on Codashop, etc.

or balance so that players wont really see that much for it to be p2w game.Im not aware with that Wow gold but i do agree into the point that you do had mentioned
about game owners would surely make use of their own shit coin rather than accepting bitcoin primarily.

You can search up bro yet there were still numbers of them where games integrate out their own coin but expect this would be mostly

I agree, it's kinda hard to implement these concept inside the game where there is a real money involved. Just like the other members said, It would only make the game a "pay to win" kind of game. But, the main idea I have is to have Bitcoin as special currency aside from the in-game currency to place a bet during pvp. I always though It will be very exciting  .
Anyway, I have tried using the Razer pins as an in-game purchase in a mobile game called MU origins, but I only used fiat. That's a good suggestion btw.

Yes, you can always trade Bitcoin to an in game items outside the game platform, and I'm pretty sure someone is doing it in a while now.
Wow is a popular game. Any popular game you play will automatically gives you an opportunity to trade your rare and precious items including in-game currency to Bitcoin outside the game platform as well.

When I was very active playing MMORPGs there's not that much feature or side bets like this when you're in guild wars, club wars or even a player vs. player match. I remember that there were players before that's thinking of this but there's no such platform that exists to guarantee the bet.

Because, if someone loses, he can simply go away and won't pay the winner. Unless, these players know each other and the betting would be p2p.

I've heard about that game but unfortunately it doesn't support multiple platform like android. The game is ok for me as you can earn satoshi while leveling up. Animation is also good it reminds me of classic 2D games like RF Online.
My only concern is, it should be available in cross platform to play and put other features like gambling inside the game to make it more realistic.

But most of MMORPG game really strict about "Real Money Trading", some of them even banned every people who selling an item, gold or anything to the real money. The developer wants to prevent all players to become an PAID PLAYER, went the new user will be greatly wrecked against the paid player. But even with that's rules we still have some player who doing an RMT on MMORPG game.

RMT always makes a bad situation to the game, which could be makes the games died faster XD. The old days when I playing Dragonest at LV 50 when everyone needs to grinding to the dungeon, nest, and anything to get good equipment and item. Even without good stats most of party always kicked me out then I'm using my brain to become the party leader so I can in into the party. But this game already closed, the last login on this game at LV 90 when on every all chats/channel always selling a gold, paid actor who helping you at a dungeon

You probably misunderstood.

I wanted to say it would get ugly when making money becomes the motivation of the players. I didn't mean the game company.

When it happens you'll have to work a lot harder to defend the game against cheaters/exploiters/scammers/hackers etc.

Every new patch will bring a potential exploit and hackers will ruin the game for everybody. When this starts to happen a lot, honest players will leave and then greedy players will leave too because there won't be anybody left to scam anymore.

Instead of playing catch game with the item/account sellers and paid players, it's better to create a system that accommodates them.
A system that doesn't incentivize multi-account since users play with their money at stake (not the casino one, lol).
