What is a shard? A database shard is a horizontal partition of data in a database or search engine. Each individual partition is referred to as a shard or database shard. Each shard is held on a separate file system to spread the load. Tagion’s database, DART, supports sharding on a single DART where the DART is divided between nodes in the network. This means that only a fraction of the data is stored in a node’s local file system. One of the examples is having a sub-DART for a video game, so that in-game transactions don’t stall the main network - and ensures the data as it is only the owner of the data that can modify or erase it. This is not the case for a torrent file system. Some data within a database remains present in all shards, but some appear only in a single shard. Each shard (or server) acts as the single source for this subset of data. A node always has a copy of the data to secure data in case a node is lost. It also improves the load speed because you can load data from several nodes at once. It also reduces distributed denial-of-service (DDoS). Practical differences between a DAG and a DLT typically include greater scalability and lower transaction fees for a DAG. They offer much higher validation speeds. In fact, whereas #Bitcoin-style blockchain slows down as traffic increases. A blockchain is a long list of blocks, so in order to find the last transaction, you need to search backward through the whole block (this is time-consuming). To minimize this issue, a #database searches for the unspent output from bitcoin transactions (UTXO) instead. There is no #mining on DAGs and therefore no need to incentivize miners through mining reward systems and thus, no need to charge users high transaction fees. No mining also means no mining equipment, the sort that you’ve undoubtedly heard uses more energy than entire nations. With little or no transaction fees, DAGs can be used in situations where blockchain would not be feasible. A prime example is micro or nano-transactions between devices and sensors. DAGs however often contain a fee to reduce spam and to control the supply of money. Question is what is more secure DAG or other DLTs? Low volume of transactions will make it vulnerable to attacks, or they are often heavily centralized. Decentralization has not be achieved with DAG so far. Also none of the DAG projects so far had any significant traction and attention in the world.

@noteblox1 To be honest the comparison might be a bit off. DAG is a graph structure, DLTs is a more general term for several technologies put together. Most blockchains use a DAG structure, including Bitcoin. Bitcoin then uses a collection of transactions in a block to do a "clearing" of the transactions. But transactions can still be on the same as a DAY. Example: IOTA uses a DAG structure directly without a blockchain for clearing. This means that you need to connect to the server that has your transactions in its database for you to view your coins. This has meant that IOTA uses a centralized server to solve this problem... This should help against blockchain bloat for sure and will make it much less ressource intensive to run a full node i guess. Do you have an estimate how big shards will become with time?

In the Tagion network, users do not have one or more wallets in the system. Instead, each user owns one or more private spend keys that can unlock their Tagions on the network for use. Now, for shards - in Tagion, we call a Shard a Sub-DART, as this is technically more correct, as there is more to it than what you have going for traditional database shards. So, I'll be using the term Sub-DART in the following. And now, let's get to it: As a rule, all Tagions exist in the Main DART. When - for various reasons - it makes sense to have some Tagions assigned to a particular Sub-DART (an example could be Alice's wallet assigning 10 Tagions to Sub-DART A that covers a certain geographical region, optimizing this for transaction speed), the 10 Tagions in the Main DART are locked and then assigned to the Sub-DART. Now, when Alice, through her wallet pays 5 Tagions to Bob, her own 10 Tagions are destroyed, 5 new are made for herself, 5 new are made for Bob, and Sub-DART ledger entries (anonymous) are updated accordingly. Only once Alice or Bob, or anyone else that may have received Tagions out of Alice's original 10, have their wallet (or software), making a transaction out of Sub-DART A, the Main DART is updated. This - rather complex setup - helps optimizing transaction speed and reduces the number of required transactions to move funds around, to a minimum. The transactions that take place and the split of the Tagions in the Sub-DART are all secured by the use of cryptographic signatures, and the Sub-DART ledger makes sure that the locked Tagions in the Main DART ends up in the right place, once transactions happen through it. Luckily, the above is invisible to the end-user. The user experience will be that you, through your wallet or other software, request to make a payment or transfer of Tagions to another, and then this happens within a few seconds. This is - btw - also the same pattern that is used for our DEX (decentralized exchange). There is not a function that allows for sharing a high transaction workload with other Shards. As the above explains, it will take a transaction out of the Sub-DART, to move Tagions. And then, why not just use the transaction to finalize what needs to be done? Another thing is that it would be a very positive situation, if we have a "Sub-DART tx overload" situation, as each Sub-DART will be capable of handling thousands of transactions per second and have a transaction fully processed within a few seconds. @criptix When can we expect the start of the alpha network and will normal users also be allowed to play around with the alpha network?We do our best not to promise releases before we have tested them thoroughly and are satisfied with them our selves. We have an internal date that we will make public at a later stage Thousands of tx per second would be incredible and several magnitudes higher compared to BTC and ETH...It is.
