Interesting discussion and I asked Google to find some information.

Quote
The longest difference between successive blocks is 463160 seconds (5 days, 8 hours, 39 minutes, 20 seconds) between blocks 0 and 1.
Quote
The second-longest is 90532 seconds (1 day 1 hour 8 minutes 52 seconds) between blocks 15323 and 15324.
Reference: https://themoneymongers.com/block-time/#:~:text=Longest%20Bitcoin%20Block%20Time,between%20blocks%2015323%20and%2015324.

I am  surprised though.

Same question!

Quote
The longest difference between successive blocks is 463160 seconds (5 days, 8 hours, 39 minutes, 20 seconds) between blocks 0 and 1
This is the Genesis block that was broadcasted in the bitcoin network at the timestamp of January 3, 2009. According to bitcoin wiki, there is some speculation that satoshi did not bother mining it until January 9 or satoshi spent the entire 6 days mining due to low hashrate.

Although the average time between Bitcoin blocks is 10 minutes, the timestamp of the next block is a full 6 days after the genesis block. One interpretation is that Satoshi was working on bitcoin for some time beforehand and the The Times front page prompted him to release it to the public. He then mined the genesis block with a timestamp in the past to match the headline. It is also possible that, since the block's hash is so low, he may have spent 6 days mining it with the same timestamp before proceeding to block

I was also surprised!

It’s OK to join discussion in existing threads, I’m trying not to be rude but you ask a lot of dumb questions that can be answered by googling. I see your name up in lights, starting thread after thread after thread.

I never understood the reason of why people hate others for posting very frequently. Okay, so I created 10 threads, what's the problem? They will soon go to the bitcointalk's deep bottom.

In here, hundreds of topics are created everyday. How am I the black sheep?

Making threads are fine but some people don't like it (me included) if you create a new thread when the answer to your topic is easy to find on the internet. It would be a different case if you create 10 interesting topics.

Interesting. I would never have guessed it would have taken over a day. My assumption was that in the early days prior to first halving, anyone could jump in and mine a block if he thought it was taking too long. But it does make sense if 1 day+ was the 2nd longest block if only a few people mined. 1 guy taking a break for a weekend would take away a huge portion of hash power.

Read somewhere that the longest consecutive difficulty downward adjustment was sometime in 2011 (7 or 8 back to back IIRC), this could also have been a period to look for longest time difference between blocks.

Actually I find it interesting to find out that it took more than a day still in the 15000 block "range".

So at least this IS an interesting topic, that many readers would not have googled by themselves.

Anyone know what is the longest gap in the recent few years?

The point of a thread isn't only solving the question of OP. I personally make threads so we can discuss too.

Interesting, I never knew that the gap was 1 day between two blocks. What was the reason? Can someone explore more into this?

I don't say all of his threads are good. But this one is interesting. Moreover, creatung threads bring a lot of information which can be helpful to others and can be new information too. I was not aware of this, just learnt that we had long delayed between two blocks. So, it's worthy to create discussion in my opinion.

You're free to think that way, but the issue is whether the answer can be found easily via google search or not. If yes, then for some people it's not that interesting. Anyway, feel free to continue the discussion if you want to. Just make sure to reread previous post that sometimes already answer your question.

~
~ he may have spent 6 days mining it with the same timestamp before proceeding to block

this part can not be correct simply because even if Satoshi used the worst (slowest) code he would have still found a block in less than an hour.
not to mention that if we assume it took 6 days to mine block 1 then it should have taken the same amount of time to mine block 2, 3, ... since they all have the same exact difficulty which is the minimum difficulty. but clearly that is not true since every block is being mined within reasonable time.

Do we? Is it like 3 hours or something similar? Did it happen recently?
Excellent question for an archaeologist Wink

This is the top 50 for biggest gap between blocks in the entire history of bitcoin up to block 633517:

Code:
Block 1 mined on 09/01/2009 03:54:25, followed 5 days, 8:39:20 after previous mined block on 03/01/2009 19:15:05.
Block 15324 mined on 23/05/2009 16:43:58, followed 1 day, 1:08:52 after previous mined block on 22/05/2009 15:35:06.
Block 16564 mined on 06/06/2009 09:50:02, followed 1 day, 1:06:30 after previous mined block on 05/06/2009 08:43:32.
Block 15 mined on 10/01/2009 05:45:46, followed 1 day, 0:12:37 after previous mined block on 09/01/2009 05:33:09.

So we have a total of three +1 day gaps in 2009, not counting the difference between genesis block and block 1.

I could do a breakdown by year, so top 50 in 2010, top 50 in 2011. Let me know (OP or others interested) if you would also like these results.

Sooner or later you're going to realize, just as I did, that there's a difference between knowing the path and walking the path

Anyone know what is the longest gap in the recent few years?

Code:
2016:
Block 425380 mined on 16/08/2016 00:02:33, followed 1:48:02 after previous mined block on 15/08/2016 22:14:31.

2017:
Block 451858 mined on 06/02/2017 22:10:52, followed 1:39:14 after previous mined block on 06/02/2017 20:31:38.

2018:
Block 554323 mined on 18/12/2018 09:06:20, followed 1:38:48 after previous mined block on 18/12/2018 07:27:32.

2019:
Block 597273 mined on 30/09/2019 19:07:42, followed 1:58:57 after previous mined block on 30/09/2019 17:08:45.

2020:
Block 621701 mined on 15/03/2020 09:39:25, followed 1:53:10 after previous mined block on 15/03/2020 07:46:15.

These are the longest gaps in a year for the years 2016-2020 up until now.

Sooner or later you're going to realize, just as I did, that there's a difference between knowing the path and walking the path

I have data on this, see Bitcoin block data available in CSV format Smiley
Block times aren't very accurate though.

How many threads do you create a week bro?
I noticed that too, but he actually had "a quiet week" with new topics. Most of his topics can be answered by a simple search.
