We are all aware that cryptocurrency is a vast subject and it is obviously difficult to grasp all the terminologies and concept embedded from the works of an unknown creator "Satoshi" only at a short period of time. Cryptocurrency specifically bitcoin is a multifaceted asset whereas some people considered it as a speculative tool to become rich in terms of economic aspect, some treat it as a revolutionary invention that combines the use of distributed system and cryptography, others uses bitcoin to attain financial sovereignty in respect to politics. Hence, educating oneself apropos to these matters are overwhelming in which a neverending study awaits you.

I understand that choosing a particular subject in cryptocurrency that suits your interest is a must, but, What are the proper practice in order to understand the subject in a chronological order? What are the different approach to make sure that the knowledge is intact in the long run? How do you study the subject in a time efficient manner? Any opinions or tips?

  Understanding bitcoin can be a mundane task if you go faster than what is meant for your stage/level. like is it a norms in other tutorial or education, Bitcoin should be approached with step by step learning, -you don't skip to MINING without understanding what TRANSACTION is- this step can help

I understand that choosing a particular subject in cryptocurrency that suits your interest is a must, but, What are the proper practice in order to understand the subject in a chronological order?

My order;
• Bitcoins whitepaper hints at it being a peer to peer transaction tool, so understanding about how bitcoins are made and transferred would be at the top of my table of contents.
• Security is another key factor. Using Bitcoin means being your own bank and you have to know the best safety practices to adopt.

The above topics would lead to discussions on addresses [private and public], block ledger technology, mining, nodes, wallets etc].

I am of the opinion that one should first of all understand the fundamentals of Bitcoin and how it works, sort of like an overview. When introducing someone to Bitcoin, I aim for them to be able to securely hold and transact using it as a first step. This way they're less likely to get scammed, or make mistakes.
You should note that each section gets broader as you delve into it. But the blockchain is a process and understanding the link between each aspect is vital.


From this point, one does not need to go in any particular order, you can expand on the knowledge you have or study a new niche area.

Since there is no teacher and no reference that you trust in the information presented with it, it is best to follow feynman technique to obtain knowledge.

In short, you will do the following:

 - Choose a concept you want to learn about: you do not know anything, do a random search in the forum, you will find a topic that attracts you, for example, bitcoin halving.
 - Do a search about it: You can search for many sources from books, educational videos, or Google. You will find many topics here^[1].
 - Review and simplify: Gather the information, arrange it, and try to understand all things.
 - Explain it to those around you: explain it to the people around you, or write about it in this forum and ask everyone to rate it.

What are the proper practice in order to understand the subject in a chronological order?

Not saying that this is the best, but it's how I mostly study stuff.

1. Research about the broad topic. (e.g. what is bitcoin)
2. Research about the terminologies I might not understand (e.g. what is decentralization, blockchain, cryptography, etc).
3. Once I get a good grasp on the basic stuff, I then move on the the sort of "supplementary" topics, like the economics of bitcoin and such.
4. Repeat step 2 for the economics of bitcoin, for the technical economics terminologies.
5. etc
6. Read around forums and Reddit and such, and check out some beginner question topics to see if I have enough knowledge to answer most if not all of them in a precise and accurate manner.

Obviously the steps are oversimplified, but you get what I mean.

What are the different approach to make sure that the knowledge is intact in the long run?

It's really common for me to forget stuff especially for the more technical stuff. You could either have some notes on a .txt file, or just simply re-research the stuff you forget.

How do you study the subject in a time efficient manner?

Ehh. I don't like rushing things really, it's not like I'm going to have an exam next week or something. I like taking things slow and steady.

If you like learning faster though, not only concerning bitcoin but learning in general, put your phone away and close all your social media tabs on your browser. Seriously. They take up A LOT of time.

Any opinions or tips?

People are going to have different ways of learning things. What works for me, might not work for you, and vice versa. Just do trial and error and stick with what works best for you.

it depends on what subject you want to learn and how deep you are planning on going. for example things listed by @mk4 such as decentralization, economy,... i consider to be basics that could be learned in an afternoon. but the technical subjects are more complicated than that.

for example you could learn about bitcoin scripts, how they work,... in about 10 to 15 minutes if you stick to the basics and only want to have a general idea of the mechanics. but if you want to learn the details (eg. FindAndDelete for OP_CHECK(MULTI)SIG(VERIFY), OP_CODESEPARATOR, conditionals,... ) then it could take a couple of days and a lot of effort at digging these information out of the source code since they are not properly documented anywhere.

that's why i always tell people who want to learn about bitcoin to first decide how much they want to learn. the basics could be found on bitcoin wiki (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/) with a little more advanced topics and in depth learning could be found on Mastering Bitcoin by A.A. (https://github.com/bitcoinbook/bitcoinbook), and in depth learning can only be achieved by a combination of all the above + dev docs (https://developer.bitcoin.org/reference/) and reference implementation (https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/)

For example, let's assume I am going to study Fluid Mechanics. The first thing I will do is to know the meaning of it, its significance and applications, also a little bit of history then after I finished it that's the time that I will go on memorizing the fundamental formulas. And then after that, I apply all of it on next topics like Buoyancy, Pressure Vessel etc.

That's my technique, I stick on mastering the basics because they are all applicable even how complicated the next topic is. Like on trading, I always mind the "Buy low, Sell high" rule. With this basic knowledge I have, I am no longer afraid and will not struggle to learn sophisticated ones such as alt daytrading or even stock market. Just don't forget the basics because that's your tool on creating path to understand advance topics.

Knowledge Is power while its application is powerful because of the result it'll generate.

I was advised to start from the bible of bitcoin ie bitcoin white paper. So I got to understand the fundamental principle behind bitcoin.

Then I move over to Wikipedia to study crypto and blockchian then I went on to terminologies of crypto.

I've grown in knowledge since then..
