Hi Rassah,

Yes, we did receive the 9.18BTC; thank you so much! That's very generous of you and Bitcoin100.

We've had close to a dozen requests to accept BTC for patients on Watsi, and it's something we want to do once we have the time to develop it.

Again, thank you for your donation. We're looking forward to better BTC integration soon!

Best,
Jesse

It is a common myth that Bitcoin is ruled by a majority of miners. This is not true. Bitcoin miners "vote" on the ordering of transactions, but that's all they do. They can't vote to change the network rules.

Regarding http://harvestlots.org, June 7th wasn't that long ago. It could be that fr33aid convinced them to start accepting Bitcoin, and took some time to contact us once they got the Bitcoin option working. I can ask Teresa how well she knows the charity and if she can vouch for them.

I don't remember if I posted this before:

Hello Rassah,
This is a great project that you have in spreading the word and use of Bitcoin!

We believe Bitcoin is an excellent alternative to the existing monetary/banking system.  Which is why our non-profit Harvest Lots has partnered with Bitpay to start receiving Bitcoin donations.

Our mission is to help communities transform their vacant lots into productive community gardens.  We have started with our first garden here in Concord, CA.  We have over 150 flourishing fruits and vegetables many of which will be donated to local charities to get them in the hands of those who need it most.

We would be most appreciative if Bitcoin100 could donate Bitcoins to us to help us expand this garden and expand our operation to other vacant lots.

We would surely reciprocate the gesture as far as doing our best to promote Bitcoin100 to our network of community garden charities and to those who are involved in this industry!

Please let me know if you have any other questions or the status of our request.

Thank you!

Hopefully, there's some way we can make it up to them, for what I've seen, August puts in one helluva lotta effort into his cause.

Phin, I'm glad you're investigating. I'm afraid I have to agree with you that Harvest Lots doesn't qualify... but not for the reasons you've given. What August does on his personal time shouldn't disqualify any organization he happens to be a part of. I saw no indication that Harvest Lots will be a vehicle to carry out any political agenda he may have.

However, Harvest Lots is not a registered non-profit charitable organization yet.

dear Bitcoin100!

We would like to thank you and your donors for the generous support! This donation will be used to fund our work towards helping socially disadvantaged children in Berlin. We do that by finding people who dedicate their time to active mentoring, to giving children attention, recognition and emotional support -- the most important resourses for the development of young personalities.

Being able to receive donations in bitcoins enables us to tap into this wonderful culture of sharing and support of good social causes. We are very greatful to you for your work and are happy to take part in the further development of the bitcoin culture.

Hi Bruno,

I only just now saw the great work you've been doing with Bitcoin 100. Amazing. I have an idea for a great charity that might provide a lot of press coverage in the Netherlands for Bitcoin and Bitcoin 100. Every year, a big radio and television station work together with the Red Cross to collect money for a noble but 'forgotten' cause. Three DJ's live in a glass house on a marketsquare for 6 days and encourage people to bring in money with their own actions.

It is by far the biggest collective action we have in the Netherlands and it's already spread to Belgium, Sweden and Switzerland. It's amazing how many people are moved to help. Last year €12.2 million euro's were collected to help prevent infant death. That's quite a lot for a country with only 16 million people.. Over 75 percent of all Dutchmen watch or listen to the program. Wouldn't it be great to ask them to accept Bitcoin?

This year it's about people dying from diarrhea. The action starts at the end of the year but donating via their website is possible the whole year. I think it would very much contribute to the credibility of Bitcoin as a legitimate currency in the Netherlands if it'd be an option to give in that way. The press coverage here is increasing but getting a big player like Serious Request to use Bitcoin might increase the awareness a great deal. Hopefully they're willing to consider it.

If you want, I can help by translating any e-mails you'd like to send them or providing you with information. The website (in Dutch): http://seriousrequest.3fm.nl/. Please let me know what you think.

Thanks and good luck with Bitcoin 100, the work you do is greatly appreciated.

I confirm that the above was sent to me first and informed its author to forward the PM to Rassah and edd.

Maybe BFL will donate a Little Single to have auctioned off. Now that would be exposure! (not meant as a double entendre)

With the reach them DJs have, it would be great to have a Bitcoin donation button affixed on their site for all to see.

I'm pretty sure there's a neat glass house analogy that'll help forward the cause.

to me
It seems donating to groups that are already "on board" still has some benefit to you in that we would promote Bitcoin100's mission as fr33aid did.

Do you have any ideas on who we could reach out to for BTC donations in that we have yet to receive any.

I let him know that his charity didn't qualify, but he would still appreciate some help.

Hi Rassah,

Thank you for accepting spices.org.my as one of your beneficiaries.

We have mentioned bitcoin100.org with a link to your charities page in our updated Donations page. We have also removed Paypal from the page.

Paypal has disabled our account from receiving donations because we could not provide a tax-exempt certificate. Although we are a registered non-profit organization providing much needed services to children with learning disabilities (who are mainly neglected in the public school system in Malaysia), we have not been able to obtain a tax-exempt status yet due to politics & bureaucracy. Very few organizations in Malaysia have this status.

This is where Bitcoin shines. If there are willing donors, nobody can stop us from receiving.

We look forward to receiving the much needed donation.

Thanks

Sorry, but you were not accepted. There were numerous concerns about spices being too much of a religious organization from our donors, and also apparently that this organization has been accepting Bitcoin donations for a very long time already, while the goal of Bitcoin100 is to convince new charities to start accepting bitcoins, not just to donate in general. You can follow the discussion here https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=52543.1360 , and it's also best to post all concerns discussions there as well. I am only a representative of this organization, and an charities have to be discussed with our members publicly, so it's best to address them directly.

Hi Rassah,

I was writing to you from your contact's page of Bitcoin100.org as a follow up because SPICES EIP was listed in the charities page with Status="Accepted" and Donation="Pending" as in the screen shot below. Just wanted to let you know what we've done in response to some of the comments in this forum and what else we may need to do to receive the donation.

I am surprised to hear that spices has not been accepted because of "numerous concerns about spices being too much of a religious organization from our donors". Going by the public discussions on this board, all comments have been positive:-

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=52543.msg2515997#msg2515997
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=52543.msg2537776#msg2537776

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=52543.msg2550271#msg2550271

I assume that the numerous objections might have come through private messages. I fully respect the donors' concern and am not pushing the case, just to clarify any misunderstandings.

In addition, I'm sorry to suggest this charity as I was not aware that your donation drive was to convince new charities to start accepting Bitcoins because the clarification was posted on your website and on this forum only after the spices case was discussed.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=52543.msg2550271#msg2550271

When I saw the positive comments and the publishing of the "Accepted" status on your website, I jumped the gun and alerted the committee that their FIRST Bitcoin donation since 2011 (besides a test transaction) was on the way! I was hoping that this might convince the committee that Bitcoin donations actually worked after all these years of waiting.

So I'd just like to clarify the whole situation and move on from here as I'm aware your hands are full pursuing this noble cause. If this decision is final, kindly update your Charities page accordingly.

Thanks.

Pouncer, since I'm responsible for updating the website, I should assume some of the responsibility for this. Going solely on Rassah's last public statements concerning SPICES EIP (quoted below), I changed the status for them on the charities page to what you saw. I've happily deferred to Rassah's judgement in these matters since he has been more active with Bitcoin100 than I have since almost the very beginning but I wasn't aware of any new circumstances that might have resulted in a denial.

That being said, I'm on the fence about this one. If I had done a bit more research before posting my own endorsement of sending them the official Bitcoin100 donation, I might have realized they were a religious organization and voted against it. Since I didn't, however, and they don't seem overtly religious or to be pursuing an aggressive recruitment agenda, I was willing to overlook my misgivings and attempt to be more diligent in my due diligence in the future. Now that the matter has been brought out into the open, I'll just share my feelings but remain open to whatever Rassah and the majority of Bitcoin100 donators decide.

I've updated the page again to show the status as "Under Discussion" and linked to this page.

#4 has been accepting bitcoins since 2011: http://web.archive.org/web/20110924062608/http://spices.org.my/be-involved/donations/

As stated above, spices.org.my has been accepting Bitcoin donation since 2011. Depending on their reach (read exposure on the internet), a consideration of a 1/3 of what's currently being doled out if they upped ante up on giving the Bitcon logo a more prominent location on their site. Again, only if their exposure warrants it, coupled with what others feel about it. Overall, they are a very fine organization.

Another way they could earn possibly the fuller amount is if a new press release about their organization is published with Bitcoin mentioned twice (once may not be enough, and three times would be overkill). The news article would have to be some venerable source, oppose to a Yahoo type release. Use thinking outside the box here.

I guess I'll have to be the asshole to tell them that our charity fundraiser is to convince new charities to start accepting, and to ask them for promoting bitcoin on their front page, or to ask them to put out a press release? I'm not sure that would be good for Bitcoin's reputation though, us extorting a charity that caters to mentally challenged kids (double-whammy).

Edd, conidering we've had, ahem, issues, is it possible to put some wording on the bitcoin100.org site that specifies some Bitcoin100 guidelines, like "donates to non-political, secular charities" and "exists specifically to convince new charities to start accepting bitcoin?" Maybe we can consider those as the "established rules" going forward, and let #4 slide this time, too?

Still around.

Yes, some of the objections were through email directly to me, and the rest from this forum. I have a way to resolve this issue though. Those donors who did not want to donate, I will cover their donation myself. It's only about 1.5 btc at this point anyway. If there are no issues with this, I'll add my 1.5 btc (you'll see it in the BTC100 address history), and send the money out Monday.

Spice seems like a great charitable organization, and I believe this is the first time an entity already accepting bitcoins has made a formal request of Bitcoin 100 for additional funds.

That said, why don't we just make a one time exception and send them the $1,000 USD from the general pool? My thinking is that nobody will probably object since probably most of the their donations have already been allocated to other NPOs, leaving only the remaining donators who've donated larger amounts, namely Roger and Zhou (among perhaps a small handful of others).

I'm sure we (read bitcoiners) will gain mileage from such an act. Though your pocketbook is probably fine, I rather not see you dole out too much from your account seeing that you've been doing such a wonderful service acting as the trusty of Bitcoin 100 gratis.

If anybody has any objections, please state your case. Nobody here will bite your head off.

Hello Rassah (and everyone else on this forum!),

My name is Cary Kelly, and I am the outreach campaign manager for ASI Conserva Chile. ASI Conserva Chile is the only association of conservation initiatives in private and indigenous land reserves in Chile, and one of few such organizations in Latin America. Recently, we launched an Indiegogo campaign to sponsor scholarships for indigenous leaders to attend our biodiversity conservation congress this summer. Indigenous communities in many Latin American nations struggle to gather the financial or technical resources to participate in growing conservation initiatives, and we want to change that by bringing key indigenous leaders into the dialogue.

As you can probably assume by my simple presence on this forum, we have decided to open up our campaign to bitcoin donations. Indiegogo does not formally integrate bitcoins into their campaign platform, but we're independently accepting bitcoins which we will then re-donate into the campaign fund, acknowledging the donor and their preferred bitcoin donation method.

We would be honored to be recipients of a Bitcoin 100 donation of any amount, and we have plans for future bitcoin incorporation soon! Though our small, mostly volunteer team in hectically busy in anticipation of our conference in Congress, we're currently discussing how and when to integrate donations into our own organization (www.asiconservachile.org). Bitcoin awareness is fairly nonexistent here in Chile, but people are slowly catching on.

Here you can learn more about our campaign:

And here is our address where we're accepting donations for the campaign: 1H8Sdng8dQwk7CmT7frs6GGLmfzs2gFwXH

If donating, we would still like to recognize you on our platform and offer you the listed perks, so please shoot me an email at cary @ asiconservachile.org

Please let me know your comments and questions!
