Bitcoin 100: Developed Specifically for Non-Profits

I'm fine with any charity that doesn't have religion as one of their main 'selling points'. But I guess that goes for most charities. I'm not familiar with most of the posted charities though. Can someone confirm this?  

Noted, in re., the religious aspect. As far as the charities mention in the OP, they were penned in for example purposes only. In fact, NPR is a bad example because each city/regional NPR station conducts their own drive, thus making it impractical for us to approach them. Again, the list in the OP was generated during the brainstorming process of Bitcoin100. That is all.

Why are you capping it at such a low dollar amount? To me 1 bitcoin means 1 bitcoin, not 1 bitcoin worth of usd as of such and such a date as shown on X exchange during the time frame y-z.

Imagine if the exchange rate goes up to where it was a couple months ago, about 10 $/btc, you could go to the charity and say "if you start accepting bitcoins for donations, we have lined up at least $1000 worth of donations right away." 1000 sounds alot better than 314.15

First off, Peter, I've expressed that the total will not be least than $314.15 USD. Just consider it as an arbitrary figure. Sure, we would love to offer more, which is not outside the realm of possibilities but, at the onset of this endeavor, I've opt to pull that recognizable figure out of my butt to use as a discussion reference, opposed to having that figured written in stone. The bottom line is this: I needed a place to start, and having members comfortably pledging, then donating, to the cause(s). Once that happens, I'll be in position to 'con' more Bitcoin value from this family as time passes.

I hope that this addresses your questions and concerns. Feel free to drop me another post, for I'm sure I'll be able to conjure up an answer to your liking. One more thing. Make sure you don't mention my plan to the other members on this BBS. Also, I'm not that versed with modular curves.

With literally thousands of organizations seeking funding or have regular fundraising drives, there's no reason for not having several (eventually hundreds) of them incorporating the Bitcoin donation option.

With that, I propose the Bitcoin100. The Bitcoin100 is nothing more than at least 100 members of this forum pledging 1 BTC each time a charitable-like organization embeds a Bitcoin donation button (or equivalent).

Before I briefly outline how it would work, I want to first state that I have no interest in holding the funds. I suggest a Bitcoin address controlled by Gavin, of which I'll state why he'll be the best choice (unless some other is proposed). Gavin is one of the main spokesperson of Bitcoin, and his voice carries a lot of weight.

That said, allow me to outline how I envision Bitcoin100 by providing a hypothetical example.

A major disaster has stricken a Pacific island. The Red Cross sets up a page to collect donations towards the relief efforts. Somebody on this board informs them that they'll love to donate Bitcoin. Their reply is the standard thanks, but no thanks. Enter Gavin. Gavin states to them that if they include a Bitcoin donation option/button, he will guarantee that at least 100 Bitcoiners will donate at least 1 BTC towards the cause. Within minutes, and it will only take minutes (unless Gavin is sleeping), of implementing the option, Gavin will be texted, paged, called, etc., whereupon, once confirmed, he'll make the transfer, from his address to theirs.

At first, no bitcoins are necessarily needed. What is needed is more than 100 individuals stating that they would pledge (not even donate yet) at least 1 BTC to any cause that they're comfortable with. The reason for having over 100 pledgers is to guarantee that there's at least 100 BTC in the pool when Gavin approaches each charitable organization.

So, to get started, simply state that you would like to be part of the Bitcoin100 and your name will be added to the list below. When we approach the 100 mark, we'll collectively vote on which organization we want to target first. Once over the 100 pledged threshold, the requests go out to all those that have pledge to donate at least 1 BTC. Once the 100 BTC goal is reached, Gavin approaches the voted upon charitable organization with Bitcoin in hand. If they decline our gesture of good will, Gavin will approach the next voted upon organization. He does this until one accepts the terms, then receives the donation. After we succeed with the first, the rest will become easier to obtain.

Ideally, it'll be nice that each person who pledges to this cause, does it with the knowledge that they may be donating to at least 100 organizations within the next coming year. But it's not a deal breaker if you only want to do it once or twice. Just get on the pledge list, and the rest will take care of itself.

Gaia willing, if and/or when Bitcoin re-bubbles, we can always adjust the 1 BTC option to reflex a suitable fiat equivalent.

With literally thousands of organizations seeking funding or have regular fundraising drives, there's no reason for not having several (eventually hundreds) of them incorporating the Bitcoin donation option.

With that, I propose the Bitcoin100. The Bitcoin100 is nothing more than at least 100 members of this forum pledging 1 BTC each time a charitable-like organization embeds a Bitcoin donation button (or equivalent).

Before I briefly outline how it would work, I want to first state that I have no interest in holding the funds. I suggest a Bitcoin address controlled by Gavin, of which I'll state why he'll be the best choice (unless some other is proposed). Gavin is one of the main spokesperson of Bitcoin, and his voice carries a lot of weight.

That said, allow me to outline how I envision Bitcoin100 by providing a hypothetical example.

A major disaster has stricken a Pacific island. The Red Cross sets up a page to collect donations towards the relief efforts. Somebody on this board informs them that they'll love to donate Bitcoin. Their reply is the standard thanks, but no thanks. Enter Gavin. Gavin states to them that if they include a Bitcoin donation option/button, he will guarantee that at least 100 Bitcoiners will donate at least 1 BTC towards the cause. Within minutes, and it will only take minutes (unless Gavin is sleeping), of implementing the option, Gavin will be texted, paged, called, etc., whereupon, once confirmed, he'll make the transfer, from his address to theirs.

At first, no bitcoins are necessarily needed. What is needed is more than 100 individuals stating that they would pledge (not even donate yet) at least 1 BTC to any cause that they're comfortable with. The reason for having over 100 pledgers is to guarantee that there's at least 100 BTC in the pool when Gavin approaches each charitable organization.

So, to get started, simply state that you would like to be part of the Bitcoin100 and your name will be added to the list below. When we approach the 100 mark, we'll collectively vote on which organization we want to target first. Once over the 100 pledged threshold, the requests go out to all those that have pledge to donate at least 1 BTC. Once the 100 BTC goal is reached, Gavin approaches the voted upon charitable organization with Bitcoin in hand. If they decline our gesture of good will, Gavin will approach the next voted upon organization. He does this until one accepts the terms, then receives the donation. After we succeed with the first, the rest will become easier to obtain.

Ideally, it'll be nice that each person who pledges to this cause, does it with the knowledge that they may be donating to at least 100 organizations within the next coming year. But it's not a deal breaker if you only want to do it once or twice. Just get on the pledge list, and the rest will take care of itself.

Gaia willing, if and/or when Bitcoin re-bubbles, we can always adjust the 1 BTC option to reflex a suitable fiat equivalent.

Whew! For a second there, I thought we may have to shut this whole thing down. I was beginning to have nightmares about a whole series of threads, all discussing the missing $1.50 USD over at Bitcoin100. Now that our first crisis is behind us and, by the way it was handled professional, as well as internally, leaving the media at bay, we can continue to move forward.

What are the thoughts on incorporating the wallet with StongCoin since dogisland was kind enough to not only waive the 1% fee, but donate said amount forward to subsequent charitable organizations?

I already made an account on Strongcoin and imported the key just to test it on there too. If you check the address on blockexplorer, the 1STRonGxnFTeJiA7pgyneKknR29AwBM77 address in the 4th transaction was Strongcoin taking its 0.01BTC fee while I was testing sending money from there (no need to return it as it wasn't part of charity operations).
Since I have this key in both Strongcoin and my home app (encrypted of course), I can send the money either way. Will probably be simpler and cheaper if I just sent it from the home app for free. Strongcoin is basically just a Bitcoin app that's browser based, so will only be useful if I need to send the money, and I'm away from home (like in London for this New Year's).

I also find that backing up the private key is a heck of a lot more convenient than backing up a wallet.dat, especially since I can import it everywhere, it's only 50-some characters long, and is easy to store.

My co-worker's new husband is from India. I actually hooked them up. So, yeah, I was aware of them not eating meat. Beef and pork specifically. Not all of them, though. The guy I know only doesn't eat pork, but is ok with chowing down hamburgers. As for the toilet paper, I actually prefer their method. They use soap and water. I tend to do my business before taking a shower, since toilet paper only does so much, and still leaves me feeling not very fresh

Ain't it amazing how pursuing a selfless passion, together, can accomplish so much? Bitcoin100 started out as a brainfart, whereupon members here expressed that it was a good/great idea. From there, this started to build, once I took hold of the reins and ran with it, as the cliché goes. To date, only about 5% of the objective has been achieved, while the remaining 95% still squirrelly rest inside my mind. But another day, another post, unearths fodder to nourish this endeavor, with each new post having the potential of revealing a kernel by its author offering up a suggestion--or opinion--and thus, quite possibly, steer Bitcoin100 onto a path I hadn't envisioned. A recent case in point: A vanity BTC address. A neat aspect, one I probably wouldn't have pursued on my own. Thank you again, Rassah.

Bear in mind, folks, that one does not need to state that they have honored their pledges, unless one wants to go on record for doing such. Working on the honor system should suffice.
