"New Sport": Ultimate Tennis Showdown

Tomorrow Saturday 13th June we will see in Nice (France) a "new sport"! Ultimate Tennis Showdown
No audience, but live broadcasted, 10 players will compete for the first time.
Same field, but different rules:

-Matches are played in 4 quarters of 10 minutes each
-Players serve twice alternatively. The player with the most points won at the end of the quarter wins the quarter.
-If the clock runs out in the middle of the point, the point continues on. If the quarter ends in a tie, a tiebreaker point will be played.
-If a player wins the first three sets, the fourth set is still played for set average purposes.
-If the players have tied with two sets apiece, the players go into sudden death.
-The player who’s total of points through the four quarters is higher gets to decide whether they’d like to serve/receive. Alternatively, the player can decide the side they’d like to play on.

This type of matches will lead also for a rule change also in "classic" tennis?

BTW Interesting format it's also a new way for betting since TIME will be a new standard for any decision.

Brown vs Paire
Goffin vs Berrettini
Lopez vs Popyrin
Tsitsipas vs Gasquet

I am very curios to watch these matches since time can be considered an unknown factor. I have seen a lot of players lose a match just because tired and stressed... fatigue is another aspect to be checked.
Let's see today what happens with the first day of tournament.

I think there will be new rules in other sports when they finally open just like what you presented here for tennis. So if we will see some modifications in other sports later on, it won't be a surprise anymore. At least, we have something to watch now live and not just replay of some sports events..Bit interesting to watch how those new rules will affect the performance of the players.

I don't know if this is another "COVID19 effect" likewise players were not able to get trainings in this period or it's just a matter related the set of rules introduce by UTS.

From what I've read about Ultimate Tennis Showdown directed by Patrick Mouratoglou. He intends to make a radical change in tennis and taking advantage of the Coronavirus crisis introduces this event with the round-robin format without groups. Where the players will face each other with the nine participants.

The 4th set for heavily-outscored player literally isn't necessary and may even force the losing player to do a lackluster performance just because. Anyway, the first few matches is quite nice as I have seen them on replay. It's just like watching regular tennis however with some extra bits such as a longer time and the serve mechanics. I immediately think of the basic tennis rules whenever one person is serving then I reize that it really is a part of the game.

I'm not sure though whether I would shell some play money on this new tourney or not. They may be the same great players in the court but there's definitely a lot of familirizing to do and it's hard to bet when the players are just adjusting to rule changes since they can't go all out.

Well, UTS doesn't have spectators. Only live streaming. (so we will not ear anymore "quiet please")

This is a tournament . No teams, but is a typical one-on-one tennis game.

I am not a fan of this concept and almost all the rules seem stupid to me.
I can understand that you want to try out something new, but this is clearly not the right direction. There is also not a lot of animo for this concept as not many bookmakers offer bets on this tournament.

For cricket this format can work, but I hope for tennis this doesn't become the new norm. I am pro long tennis matches of 4-5h because often these matches are very good. Every year I visit Roland Garros (except this year  ) and I always hope to see long tennis matches if the play is good (which is often the case).

The same for Shootout in Snooker, a very short format to make it more popular but it simply doesn't work.

new rules can be confusing to existing players at first and that can affect thier gameplay  . betting on them is risky tho . i wont bet on sports bet for now if i heard new rules are going to be applied but ill be waiting for sometime till the players fully adopt it .

 i read that some rules arent really related on our current situation , i thought i will see a rule where players are reduced and maintain a good distance when playing . on other sports other rules are already implemented like using only a virtual audience .

Yeah, it won't change the rule per se, but it might be adopted in some small tournament perhaps like the ATP 250. Or other small matches, and it will make more exciting to watch and it will really suit more players specially the young generations of ATP's.

Actual ranking of the players seems "normalized", since 6/8 players will continue to the next stage.
It could be interesting see current ATP ranking and UTS actual ranking. The lowest ATP ranking player are "out of the games" at this moment, but we will see more in the next weeks of game.

I didn't had chance to watch this tournament, but I'm going to try if I will find where to watch it. Maybe these who already watched can share their experience about the game?
Personally for me these new rules lookd a bit complicated. I know that they are trying something new, but I'm not sure that they need to try to invent bike.
Though, for person who never watched tennis, probably it's easier to explain what is blockchain than rules of tennis with all games, sets, tie-breaks and how points is counted .

Five hours grueling match for tennis is kinda boring, yes exciting, but most of the time, you really wanted to see the match concluded much early. And if my memory serves me right, there are fans who complain about matches going beyond the usual time, like finishes in 1 am.

For hardcore fans it's interesting, but for someone who randomly turned it on, 5 hours in front of TV watching tennis doesn't looks like exciting idea. Maybe unless it's final of Wimbledon or other Grand Slam. And for current young generation it's difficult to keep attention on one thing, they soon become bored, so with such tournaments they are probably looking how they can attract young fans to tennis.

After N. Djokovic get tested positive for COVID19 it's pretty clear we need to wait probably more to see the classic tennis. no they wont do that because if you read the title again it says new sport so that means this was like a new sport or a new variation of the original tennis  , no need to worry  .

 this sport with  new rules can be refreshing and looks fun to some sport addicts but for me i also like the original tennis because that is what im more familiar with and i dont want to tire myself for learning new rules  because im already busy on many things  these days  . i have no problem with audience too since its only tennis  .

This is a new alternative to tennis, maybe the Ultimate Tennis Showdown was created because of this pandemic condition.
The format and rules are different from original tennis, it's no wonder it's called a new sport. At least this Ultimate Tennis
Showdown can be entertainment for those at home still in quarantine, even though I am not yet familiar with the format
and the rules. So i have to make more time to read the explanations in various articles on the internet, to better understand
the rules.

Sports shouldn't change their rules because of pandemy. But some adjustments may be needed to reduce risks of injuries, like we see in football 5 substitutions and cooling breaks.
I agree that there is no need to fix things which aren't broken and original tennis rules is good. While this tournament is just exhibition and attempt to try something new. I watched few matches and for me these new rules were a bit complicated. But it may good for people who don't havie patience to watch 3 hours length matches because in Ultimate Tennis games is very short.

D. Brown has won the first match!
Meanwhile Tsitsipas won against Berrettini, consolidated the first position of current ranking.
Benchetrit won both matches of weekend and he has get a new better position for the next round.
[We can expect just one player out for the next turn, since Dominic Thiem will play in another tournament. He has been removed from UTS current ranking... probably this can move interest of the players in lower/mid ranking since they don't need "to win" for the next turn ]

Personally, I like this new format since there are some nice aspects respect the "classic" tennis.
It should be verified if other tournaments will be played, since players normally prefer get ATP points and not playing long unofficial tournaments like this...
