Safepal hardware wallet review and opinions

Hello guys, I was looking for an Hardware Wallet and i found this small and smart device. It immediately cauch my attention.


The wallet is called “SafePal” and it is supported by Binance Labs, Litecoin Foundation and Trust Wallet.

I had the opportunity to buy and try one of it last month. It is very easy to use and with a nice-looking design. In the package we can find:

1 USB-A to micro-USB cable
1 SafePalm Stickers Set
3 Recovery Sheets
1 little cloth to clean it


SafePalm S1 supports over 1.500 cryptocurrencies and therefore you can store the best cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dash, Bitcoin Cash, Tron, EOS and many more.

No physical attachment point: SafePal S1 does not use WiFi, Bluetooth, NFC and or radio signals.
It communicate via encrypted QR codes with double scanning between the safepal app and the safepal wallet which is equipped with a special camera, keeping your 100% private key offline. In addition, it has an EAL5 + cryptographic chip, which helps protect your wallet from cyber attacks and implements a self-destruction and data deletion mechanism. The SafePalm supports 10 different languages 
Inside the dedicated app we also find a dex that connects directly to the Binance dex and it will be possible to trade your BNB directly from the app itself without the need to have them on the binance exchange.

The current price for one device is $ 39.99 + shipping costs, but if you buy 2 or more the shipping is free. This is an affordable and very competitive price, for me an excellent wallet for this price. I hope I did something pleasing to everyone and can help someone that want to try it.

I don't know if I should feel safe having a camera on my hardware wallet. I feel like it's a potential privacy risk while the thing is turned on. Would've been much better imo if they had a little camera cover. I also cannot find any open-source mention of it, so I suppose it's closed source which I don't agree with for a HW. Even Ledger, although it's partially open source, makes me a bit suspicious about it.

Moreover, in comparison to what Ledger says (at least if we take their words for granted), SafePal has a Serial Number which means these devices could be tracked if you don't take the right precautions. In other words, if you purchase this device from their website using your real name and address, they could assign the SN of the sold SafePal to your personal data which is worrying, to say the least.

I have a few questions however:

• How does the device feel? From your first picture, the front buttons look like they feel a bit cheap - I know this is a $40 device, but does it feel sturdy or at least of average quality?
• If there's one thing I hate about my Ledger, it's the fact that I cannot for example see the balance of all my accounts without having to add them beforehand in Live. Can you see all balances directly from the SafePal?
• Does it have a rechargeable battery or do you have to keep it constantly connected to an USB port?
• As far as I understand, the hardware wallet does not need any kind of connection in order to complete a transaction as you could simply just scan QR codes, right? If you plug it in a PC, can you use any other wallet besides theirs with it? With Ledger for example, you can use Electrum.

Hi, I try to be as exhaustive as possible in answering your questions, as far as your perplexity is concerned, I totally agree, however being that safepal wallet does not use any radio connection, the use of the camera remains only locally and only for scan the QR codes, obviously I do not exclude that it may damage the privacy.

- The device itself is very handy but you can still note that cheap material has been used, the buttons are not always responsive but given the low cost of the device you can turn a blind eye, the device is of average workmanship and obviously you cannot expect that it is impact resistant, you must keep it carefully

-From the safepal wallet it is not possible to view the balance of the coins kept but it is possible to view it from the appropriate smartphone app

-Includes a rechargeable lithium battery (if I'm not mistaken) of 450mha which has a good duration in itself, obviously the more the wallet is turned on the faster it discharges, but since most of the operations are done through the app the wallet battery is recharged few times

-The hardware wallet can only receive incoming transactions, in order to be able to send a transaction instead you need to double scan the QR code, once by scanning with the safepal wallet the QR code that appears on the smartphone app and once by scanning with the smartphone the qr that appears on the safepal wallet, for the moment it is possible to use only the smartphone app and it is not possible to connect it to the pc, only for software update it can be connected to the pc

There is a github repository but I can't tell you if the code is open-source or not. Obviously your perplexity is more than fair, it is not easy to trust something when money is at stake, whatever the type of wallet (HW, SW or PW) we will never be 100% sure that our coins are safe

The review from the second link you provide says, "SafePal is closed-source." That would be another con on the list.

It also says the HW is fully air-gapped and yet it needs to be plugged into a computer to update the firmware. That sounds contradictory to me. That means it is not fully air-gapped in the strict sense of the word.

But it would be interesting to see this new player in the market developed further. And definitely make their HW device more sturdy to start with. I guess the price always comes second to basic features in terms of safekeeping.

Amazing product for ana amazing price. Yes this helps also people that start with a low quantity of crypto to learn what is an hardware wallet, how it works and why is better than put cryptocurrencies in the exchanges. The binace dex function is also amazing for the "not holding users".

What I first noticed was that this hardware wallet was developed in collaboration with Binance, which to some extent gives them a certain dose of credibility for a good start. Also the price is very competitive with the main competitors (although Ledger has very good discounts from time to time), but for those who want to try something new this HW looks like a very good opportunity.

I checked the price of postage for the EU and it is about $ 12, but I did not find information from where the device is sent, so I can not say anything about customs costs and the total price of the device (our VAT + custom tax may apply).

What kind of SEED  does it use, BIP39 or its own scheme for phrase formation? 2) what about software it can  communicate with, solely with Binance app or something else. 3) and memory, how many coins  that wallet could control at once?

According to what is stated on their page (click on Shop tab) this HW is support BIP39/44 standard. Their download page is only offer SafePal app, so we can assume that this is the only official app for this wallet. But it is also backed by Trust wallet, and this wallet is in Binance hands from 2018.

They do not state clearly how many apps it is possible to have on the device at the same time, but they state that they have a different strategy than Ledger and that their device can support unlimited of cryptocurrencies.

I purchased the product about a month ago, the product cost $ 39.99 + shipping cost for Italy of $ 6, the product was sent from Shenzhen China in about 15 days due to the emergency covid19, but on the site it is specified that it takes about 8 working days to receive the product

It definitely has some cons that make me doubt whether it's worth it to go for a cheaper HW or to buy the Ledger/Trezor instead, especially as we're talking about the safety of your funds. As both Ledger & Trezor are very popular and have gone through many security tests, I'd personally rather wait a little more and save money for one of them instead.

An interesting product however, I'll keep an eye on it. Maybe time will prove my gut instinct wrong.

And yeah, this definitely looks like a pretty slick-looking hardware wallet and it isn't too expensive either.  If I had some extra cash to blow I might be interested in buying one, if only for the novelty--but I don't, nor do I need multiple HW wallets.  The Ledger is tried-and-tested, and I'd be afraid to try a new one without a positive track record, especially since I'm not a tech geek who could easily see flaws in the code and so forth.

If you're buying a hardware wallet that you're actually going to use to store crypto, I wouldn't play around with anything except a Ledger or Trezor.  Certainly not until some of these new wallets establish themselves as contenders in the market.

I would not say Safepal is better than Ledger or Trezor hardware device, but it may be better than all the rest hardware wallets.
We need to see more Safepal testing from coders and experts.

Good thing is the price, as currently it is one of the cheapest hardware wallet, and you can even get free shipping if you buy two.

Bad thing is that Safepal is not open source software, and we are not being able to use it with desktop OS.

About air-gapped how did firmware upgrade?

I don't know why they created an additional app, maybe the binance labs are just an investor in the safepal team, I don't really know the details. however, within the safepal app there is the exchange section that connects directly to binance dex and you can start trading directly from the wallet without sending funds to binance. in my opinion it is a really interesting feature! same functionality that exists on trustWallet

as for the update, I can't answer you, they gave me the device with the latest firmware available, I will let you know when there will be a new update

As mentioned a few posts before, I find the dex binance function in the wallet extraordinary. In this regard, have you ever tried this function? unfortunately at the moment I don't have BNB, but I am inclined to buy someone just to be able to try this function, I will keep you informed when I can try the dex, since there is still nothing new, or neglect in addition to the dex that there is the swap functionality that I have not described in the review, but not very useful in my opinion, since it exchanges coins at the last available price, useful only for those who do not want to wait and quickly exchange their coins

I installed SafePal App on iPad, It crashed once.
Also, the pointer when you input the pin, sometimes it's disappeared for a few seconds.
Please fix this, because I don't want my wallet in self-destruction mode when I miss clicking my pin because of this problem

Two days ago updates were released for both the hardware wallet and the mobile app, mostly they fixed minor identity bugs and added the dapp section on the wallet app. I still haven't made the updates personally.

They fixed a bug on the swap that did not trade the coins, now it works fine.

I've read somewhere (can no longer find where, sorry) that the QR codes are encrypted. Can anybody confirm if that's the case? If that is true this seems to be a danger. How do we know that some information isn't leaked out to binance labs? There are other air-gaped HW wallets, Cobo vault, ellipal titan. All are much more expensive the the safepal but they all use unencrypted QR codes.

I inform you of a further update, in the dapp section the Binance dapp has been added, which allows you to synchronize the safepal HW with the binance exchange, features that are added to the already present Binance dex dapp. I have to try out the new features these days, at first glance it would seem useful, at least not pay the sending fees, as the coins will remain in our wallet. I will update you when I have more news

I am highly interested as well in analyzing the qr codes that are being sent by the device... I did scan some of the qr codes from some youtube videos (reviews videos) I did not had the time to fully analyze/reverse the qr code... but it contain the derivation path in clear text... the phone model and I guess its serial are broadcasted to the S1 when coupled over qr codes (the first time)... normally the qr code would contain the different public keys of the different used currencies wallets and may be some additional informations... I really need to look into this to see if there is some leakage and if the wallet can be trusted fully... otherwise I'll test that extensively when I receive mine... but honestly I don't think they will risk their reputation by sending sensitive data like the private key, even encrypted this would ruin them for good and make the device completely useless... anyway I would really love to see this device communicating in a "clear" way; that would make it easily compatible with other app/wallets and would let us check it furthermore... personally I prefer analyzing qr codes instead of bluetooth communication even if it's told "opensource" this word is throwed everywhere now days without real possibility to check what's going on.    

Any way anyone checked the qr-codes?

Aside from that as it's not opensource, I would kind a check manually every qr code on production loool... but at first look it look all legit and working as intended... yet I did not had the time to complete the analysis.

Bad news after checking furthermore, the qrcodes can not really be decoded (thus said they does not contain nor private nor public key IN PLAIN text)... they theoretically contains public key in an encrypted manner, Check this official answer -> https://safepalsupport.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360054745351-Is-it-possible-to-pair-the-SafePal-S1-hardware-wallet-with-other-apps-   

- On the "Pro" side: this is a secure way to communicate and as we somehow trust Binance, we can then trust Safepal.
- On the "Con" side: users/developers can not check what the device is broadcasting on its Qrcodes, and everything is closed source, so no simple decoding possible, and no other application can use Safepal S1 (this is intended by Safepal).

In a business perspective I can understand such move, but this is not a licensed bank this is cryptocurrency and trust need to be proven not just obtained by reputation.
I really really loved this device, its conception, its price... BUT it's not worth of trust at 100% level   I really hope that Safepal will release some documentations, sources code or the used encryption to let the users/developer just be 100% sure of this device. this is not the case right now...

So for those of us that are really maniac about security, Safepal S1 is a strong NO! until Binance/Safepal release something that can proof what's the content of those qrcodes.

Note that I am not against Safepal S1 nor Binance nor did I find an exploit or a bug BUT I am on the side of a 100% proven security not just reputation.

I don't trust Binance or any other exchange, and I still remember then time when someone hacked them, then sold and exposed all customer data online.
Even less I trust their closed source hardware wallet Safepal, because same thing could potentially happen again like for ledger one million customer leak.
Safepal also has one of the cheapest hardware wallets and it is not supporting any other 3rd party wallets software like Electrum for example, and there is no full node support.

Few more negative sides:
- No support for signing messages
- No mulltiple accounts support
- No multi-sig support
- No coin control
- No desktop software available

When there are no obstacles blocking the vision, it is much easier to see what is happening, right? But you still need to recognize the activities to understand something wrong is happening. In other words, you need to understand how a piece of code works to understand what is not supposed to be there or how it's supposed to look. If you see a pile of white powder through the window with no blinds and you think it's powdered sugar, what good does it do that the windows have no blinds when the wrong set of eyes are looking in? What good does it do if you don't realize the code has a backdoor when you can't understand it.

Open-source allows you to verify the content (good or bad).
Closed-source doesn't allow you to verify anything. It can be good or bad, but you will never know and you are stuck trusting what the developers tell you.

I would never waste a single satoshi on buying Safepal wallet, and this is all worthless shitcoins and buying hardware wallet just to get few bucks from some airdrops is not very smart, especially if they are asking for any kind of identity verification.
No need to repeat ourselves about Safepal wallet, just read everything that is written in this topic and know that Safepal has serious flaws in their design.

I am an old SafePal user and so far using the SafePal hardware wallet there are not many problems, only when I want to enter my wallet the QR Code scanning process is quite tricky, it requires patience because it cannot move at all. maybe also because of the smartphone camera that I use, there is a slight reflection when exposed to light from the safepal hardware screen. It took about 10 minutes to get in.

it is very strange that it asks you to scan 61 qr codes, for me personally they have never gone beyond 8 qr codes, however the airdrop was only when they launched their token, and then a few other partnerships with other projects. I bought safepal about two years ago and so far never had any problems honestly, not even on qr code scans. thank you for your feedback

The following things might come in handy:

• If S1 doesn't have a feature to reduce screen brightness, you can try placing a slightly darker acetate paper in front of it to diffuse the light that's coming out of it ^{[it's more useful in darker rooms]}.
• When you want to scan the QR Code, make sure there's more/enough light in the background ^{[it'll be easier for the lenses to focus]}.

Safepal also updated its logo and after several updates and firmware updates, I didn't find any airdrops that would benefit SFP and hardware swallow holders. They only focus on adding new blockchain networks. Even though the community remains active, there is no commensurate reward for the holders.

For now, safepal has made several updates to the use of the Chrome, Mozilla, and Edge Browser Extensions which will make it easier for safepal wallet users to access their wallet via a desktop browser. I'm using Mozilla firefox and it runs smoothly, just import and then create a password unlock the wallet, then scan with safepal app on mobile. quite easy.

The lack of chips may just be an excuse to delay the production of S2, they are indeed still focused on developing S1 as much as possible, especially on the firmware upgrade and extension features that have features to switch with Metamask.

Can you not run it directly with a connected USB cable? I'm not familiar with SafePal but looking at my Nano X, I can still use it when my battery is empty (connected with a cable of course). I personally don't think it is a major problem since you usually use an HW with another device that has a USB port. Still sucks though.

Actually, use the safepal wallet when the battery is empty with USB still connected + charging it can still be used, but if you do it often it might affect battery life because it will overheat. so I use the safepal wallet when it's not being charged to power.

In some circumstances, it may be possible for me to look at the battery indicator to check how much battery remains. But when I turn it off and don't use it for too long the battery will decrease.

But when I press the power button 1x the wallet will standby (maybe this will drain the battery), but when I press the button for a long time and the wallet is off, maybe the battery is not reduced, I'm trying it, and will know the results later when the wallet is completely turned off.

Well maybe later there will be some difference after updating to USB-C I can feel how the hardware is once in my hand and usually with USB-C port charging faster and battery lasts longer but I don't know I haven't felt all that except it's true really already hold in the hands of the SafePal hardware.

Now that should be a concern because no matter what it looks like with no charge at all it will definitely affect the hardware wallet, whereas I always don't use it every week or every month but keep it for a long time and only record the BTC address to receive bitcoins from routine purchases every week or every month.

I can find this sign/verify page on BSCscan, are you referring to this[1]? It supports MetaMask and WalletConnect. According to this page, SafePal does support WalletConnect, so it's not impossible for you to create a message and sign it[2]. I never tried it myself though, since BTC-signed message is more common here. CMIIW.

I'm still trying to leave it for 20 days after fully charging the battery so I didn't turn on the hardware again until 20 days later, I'm curious about that if for 20 days the battery will run out or is there still some left after that, I'll let you know after reach the next 20 days.

I think the explanation shared on the official link is very vague. There is no test data, ambiguous 10 minutes a day usage, etc. I would not take them seriously tbh. Even if you complain about it and claim that they scam you, they can easily claim that your usage and their test are different. I'll just assume the worst and be prepared to change the battery (if possible) some months after I use it since I read many threads on social media like Reddit that S1's battery life is questionable. That being said, it is not that different from other HW though (some members even claim it is better than what Ledger is using), so that's that.

I've never had a problem charging the battery everything went normally charging pretty fast in my personal opinion.
I'm still trying to leave it for 20 days after fully charging the battery so I didn't turn on the hardware again until 20 days later, I'm curious about that if for 20 days the battery will run out or is there still some left after that, I'll let you know after reach the next 20 days.

In the latest firmware update, nothing has changed in battery usage. My safepal is still wasteful even if it's not used at all.
Looking at the latest firmware upgrade information there is only information about adding networks, and they do only focus on new networks.

If you already use your wallet many times, the battery drain might be more severe than you think, so a firmware upgrade might not help that much. About modifying the safepal battery, it seems doable. I searched for some references and found some safepal users had an error and died on the safepal device battery. and they tried to take it apart and you can see the safepal battery has a power of 400 mAh with a voltage of 3.7v 403035 .

and then I searched the marketplace for many available batteries of the same size. this makes it possible to replace the safepal battery with another battery of the same type. this would be better than waiting for a refund (for new users) which of course would take quite a long time.

That sucks, but not surprising since some users already stated that the battery quality is terrible. I guess you should not use this device if you plan to store crypto for the long term. About the tamper sensor not being available and not matching the published advertisement, I also just found out about it.
There are many problems that may occur in this first version of the safepal wallet, but I don't know about the second version, or whether there may be many updates I don't have it yet and there are no plans to buy safepal version 2.

That's not surprising. Most battery-powered devices have good battery life for the first months or so, and then it deteriorates after that. The speed will depend on the quality, usage, charging habit, etc. The timeframe of your test needs to be longer to see more reliable data.

If you don't plan on using it to store some crypto for the long term, is there any specific reason why you bought it? Honestly, after some years of using a hardware wallet, building my own air-gapped device to store crypto sounds better for my needs. I don't think you need to buy a new one just because the battery died though if you just want to store some crypto there. As long as you can still use it and there is no critical exploit that only needs an internet connection to use them as an attack vector. CMIIW.

Whether it's important or not, it's something to look out for.
Maybe Safepal will release their new wallet later, but I don't know when.
Certainly with more significant updates and the quality should be better.

They are too focused on blockchain updates alone at the moment.

For the ETH and BNB staking feature I haven't tried it yet.
But looking at the Earn >> Stake Tab it is available for Staking ETH APR 5%, BNB APR 4.08% and FLR.

UPDATE SAFEPAL

After Safepal released the latest X1 series of hardware, Safepal seems to be more serious in developing firmware by adding several new chains that are now quite popular such as Core Network and some BRC20 network tokens that are currently popular.

Now X1 is a new hardware wallet that has a different design from Safepal S1 and S1 Pro.
And from the specifications are also different because the Safepal X1 now has a Bluetooth connection and no longer Air-gap (even though Air-Gap is safer).

All three Safepal hardware wallet devices both have the same firmware update.

I'm not sure if you already know the answer or not, but from a bunch of videos I've seen on YouTube, it appears to require a transaction for staking/unstaking so it definitely goes to another platform ^{[unfortunately]}.

I completely forgot about this thread of mine, thanks for letting me know. Yes, I had already understood for some time that unfortunately to obtain a reward from staking you had to make a transaction! too bad, because it would have been much more interesting, but maybe one day they could implement this functionality

That is also one of the factors, many new chains are supported by Binance and implemented also in Safepal Wallet such as Layer 2 Chain support ZKsync , Arbitrum, Optimism, and base.
For Core Network is not too hype, but BRC20 is very hype and has many users, which eventually makes the current Bitcoin network even more congested.

I really like the design but it seems copied from ColdCard.

But it depends on where they live, if it is close enough to the safepal head office I think 3 days is already the usual delivery,

Trezor mentioned they're "facing some issues in the production" yesterday and since we don't know which production parts are the real culprits here, it could either be internal or external problems.

You can tolerate such delays when you know they've just started their journey ^{[you're dealing with a brand that doesn't have enough experience in this field]} but with popular brands, it's a different story.
