I remember looking at the comet Hale–Bopp back in the 1997
I also got to see Hale-Bopp, that was cool. I took a trip to the top of a local mountain to get a better look at it. But it wasn't quite as brilliant as I remember Halley's comet, which I got to see in 1986 (yeah, I'm an old fart.) I was fairly young when Halley's was visible, but remember being so impressed by it. It was one of the factors that instilled an enthusiasm for astronomy.
I was looking for NEOWISE in the morning skies a couple of weeks ago, but it eluded me. I got to see it last night for the first time, the skies were finally clear enough in my location. I might take a trip to the mountain top this weekend to take a photo.
The history of comet visits is also quite fascinating. Many times they are met with significant social events. No need to list all the societal peculiarities of this year, as they've been well displayed and discussed. One of the weirdest things I remember hearing about happened during Hale-Bopp's visit;
a group of religious zealots committed mass suicide to hitch a ride on Jesus' space ship, which was hidden in the comet's tail.
Yesterday I was planning to see it with my own eyes(I live near a big river, and I can go to the shore one hour after the sunset to get rid of those city lights), but it was all cloudy and stuff, so, I had no chance. I'm not giving up, though! If the sky is clear - I'm there.
Regarding the pictures on the Internet, I like this video
because it reminds me of seeing Hale-Bopp back in the day.
