Well, it is good to know for the sake of knowledge but merit shouldn't be the first thing newbies (like me) to consider. Providing value to the community comes first above all.

This is the first reasonable post in your post history, almost worth a few merits. Problem is, to do so I have to disregard everything you wrote in the Alt board, included the POS>POW nonsense. So the merits I would have given to you for this posts are more than offsets by be “negative merits” you earned for the other posts. Really sorry.

After you have been on forum long enough and are wel known snowball effect works for you, that's how some people have thousands of merit
This is definitely a factor for some accounts with vast amounts of merit. There are lots of subcultures on here and some of them are made up of nothing but accounts that were senior before the merit system arrived. Many never step outside their groups so you have people who started off with large amounts of merits they were airdropped batting that merit back and forth between each other. A lot of the stuff they merit each other for is in jokes or one liners, or simply agreeing with the point of view that's fashionable among them, that would never be merited outside that club.

What I want to say, to the OP, not to you @gentlemand, is that having friends might help, but it’s not a condition to get merits, and if ever the snowball effect exists, the effort on post quality content for sure pays off better in the long run at getting merits.

Of course. You've done it the long and hard way. Most others got a bit of a shortcut and gave each other a leg up too. If I were intent on growing my merit score - and I'm not, the only meaningful figure to me was 1000 earned - there are places I wouldn't bother devoting my energy to like the altcoin sections. There are areas where it definitely flows more than others.

Well merit is requirement for you to rank up. And in my opinion getting merit is not easy as it could be. It takes a hardship before you can acquire it like average posters like me. Anyway, I am okay with my current rank and does not wanted to rank up to higher ranks. I can get to use of it and happy that I am earning cents with the campaign I join.
Still if given a chance to rank up then yes sure why not. I can't just get enough merits like those quality posters did here in the forum. You can observe how they do it and follow on how and what they did.

I would struggle to post in the Altcoin section even if there were a continuous overwhelming flow of merits. There is a limit to everything, intellectual prostitution included. I would rather take pride in something like “ legendary outside altcoins”...

I checked your merit received history and some names repeat a lot. After you have been on forum (any other field) you automatically create connections and those connections help you climb higher.

Merits and the number of posts decides your rank in this forum. The more merits you have the higher your rank. Merits are basically rewards which are distributed by fellow members depending on your topic or reply here.
Therefore always create great topics and be helpfull to anyone here with your replies.

A lot of the weirdest and most interesting stuff by far happens in the altcoin section. It's wading through the noise and hysteria that makes it an unbearable experience. That's one section that could really use a Reddit-style thread upvoting system to find the good content. But if you're committed to ranking up your account you need to limit the energy you put into it. It's a shame there isn't more possibility of reward in there for the good posts.

I just got only 1 merit I don't know what it means and I see some profile with thousands of merits. What does it and how does it come?
You joined this forum more than a year ago. But you do not know, what is merit? This is because you have spent most of the time in the forum in bounty section. You didn't spend much time outside the bounty section so you don't know what merit means. Merit is an indicator of a good quality post. This means that if you see some merit in a thread or a post, then you must understand that the post or thread must be of good quality. If you post good quality post then you will definitely earn merit. Now let's talk a little bit about what is sMerit (sendable merit). sMerit is the merit that you can send to others. If you get 1 merit, then your sMerit will be 0.5 which means half of the merit you will get will be added to your sMerit. However, you cannot send a fraction of 0.5, 1.5 such merit to others. You can only send the full number of merits (1, 2, 5 etc) to others. To see your Merit and sMerit Balance, visit.. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit. Here are some important threads about forum rank and merit which will clear your idea about forum rank and merit if you visit them. 1. FAQ: Everything you need to know about forum 'activity, account ranks and merit2. Forum ranks/positions/badges (What do those shiny coins under my name mean?)3. Merit & new rank requirements4. First of all I will welcome you to the forum where sharing ideas and contributing to the development ofbthr forum and humanities are met. So many users here acquire merits on a different dimensions and I believe you too can it in which ever ways that suit you. Merits are rewards earned that helps in ranking up in the forum with corresponding activities. I just celebrated my full member rank because I earned 100 merits worth the full with required 120 activities. Here are helpful links to follow. Merit, activities and rank systems. I think all have been pretty much said about what merit is. And if you'll take time to read those links of threads posted before me, then you'll surely understand what it means. Just think of it as "likes" or "reacts" you get when posting something, like in social media. Though there are some things that merit-senders are looking for in a post before they give them one. Like the quality or relevance of the content. Giving merits is totally upon their discretion.
Some people have thousands because they were already in a high rank when the merit system began, then they continue to post good quality and relevant contents that other members find merit-worthy so they continue to gain merits.
Hope my explanation helped you somehow.

If many beginners have thoughts like you, there will probably be many beginners who will move up the rankings with effort and post quality that can be said to be good. anyone can move up the ranks and earn a lot of merit. The OP just doesn't know what to do and how the mechanism works.

Merit is a mechanism that acknowledged a quality post. A merit can equally be define as a criteria that qualify a member to the next rank, which also indicates that a post of op,is meaningful. You define merit as evidence of reward to someone who contribute immensely to the betterment of the forum.

@Op Merits are like retweets on twitter because it is hardly gotten since it deserves an earnest intellectual output, whereas you need dedication time and patience to earn merits and ranking on the forum is mostly decided my merits and activities count. The accounts with much merits have been here contributed a lot to the forum via elaborating the systematic review of Bitcoin and blockchain entirely. It is quiet surprising why newbies are always not ready to read the frequently asked questions and repeat the question all over again. . <...> If I were intent on growing my merit score - and I'm not, the only meaningful figure to me was 1000 earned - there are places I wouldn't bother devoting my energy to like the altcoin sections. You've being a dedicated forum member to have ranked up to your current rank. Well deserved!

Legendary purely from altcoins would be a very significant achievement since so little merit flies around on that board. You'd have to be ten times more compelling than someone who posts tit gags in the wall observer thread.

That's not an insult directed to anyone. It's a straightforward factoid. If one is in that particular club the merit will flow far more than other places where relationships aren't as close or reciprocal.
