Hello, I am desperate and just looking for some guidance. I am new to crypto and was using dharma.io for the first time last night. I bought a wbtc but later on decided I wanted to transfer the asset to Coinbase. Again I am new so I accidentally sent it as wbtc to my ethereum wallet. So obviously it didn’t show up and I am scared like hell I lost the asset and 12 grand. I am in touch with Coinbase support and I sent them the transaction hash but am I SOL? It was an honest mistake from a crypto noob and I’m reading online they can’t or won’t get it back. I’m losing it and I need something guidance please. Thanks.

Most chances they will not send any thing back because its happen many times already if user send coins to wrong address they never send back so its a lesson for you next time do double check and then transfer your coins because its very sensitive matter and need some good intention from user.

When you say "WBTC", do you mean Wrapped Bitcoin, the ERC20 token (https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/wrapped-bitcoin)?

If we are talking about WBTC the ERC20 token, then sending it to an Ethereum address is exactly how these tokens are transferred. Although Coinbase do not support ERC20 tokens on their exchange, since Coinbase have access to that Ethereum address they will also be able access to your WBTC. The difficulty here is going to be convincing them to recover it for you - their customer support is terrible and they have often left other customers in similar situations hung out to dry (usually with BTC/BCH sent to the wrong address).

You will likely have to spend weeks hassling their support. Cause a fuss on Twitter and Reddit - sometimes community backlash will convince them to recover your funds. Since it is a significant amount of money, you could also pursue legal action.

Op sorry about the mix up in your transaction/address, as it stands your help can only come from coinbase and their support team, what was their reply when you contacted them about the issue? There's no doubt this whole process is going to be a very long and frustrating one, that could even end up in you not getting your coins back.

Just like the post above, try dragging coinbase out on some of their social media handles, every company hates it when they are in the spotlight for the wrong reason, hopefully coinbase may attend to your case and recover your funds. That being said, stick around in this community and also asks questions so this mistake doesn't happen twice.

Your strongest hope is what o_e_l_e_o mentioned, your last resort is 'luck', WBTC is listed on some major exchanges such as Bittrex and Bitfinex, so who knows? maybe one day in the future Coinbase decides to list the coin and it would magically show up in your balance, 12k is a lot of money and if you make some noise about it across all different social media platforms - you might get lucky enough.

Coinbase won't list WBTC, so false hopes there as they have not even fulfilled some promises in the past by announcing a partnership but not adding that coin/token to their platform due to certain reasons.

@OP, isn't it fine if you ask them to keep some percentage (like 5 or 10), I mean they're literally terrible and won't really help unless bribed (if bribing them works out). I'm sorry if anyone gets offended by my suggestion but I thought that getting a hefty amount back is not so easy there and so, something is better than nothing and to get that something back, we should do something. I know coinbase is not a cheap firm there, but if they don't co-operate the way we expect, then this is probably the last option.

He should be aggressive as nagging their customer support will not be a solution here. Create noise in social media because anyway it is large sum of money. And presenting his case in social media is free. So maybe, if he can get support from the community, coinbase will take action on this case. Though the likelihood that they will return it is really low as the fault of sending to wrong address was his. A very huge lesson here. If you are a newbie, try with small amounts first and check if it goes thru, I do that even  now, when dealing with exchanges.

Coinbase only reflects coins or tokens they have officially listed in their wallet despite supporting Ethereum Blockchain. Coinbase support will probably be your only hope right now.
Always try to use Non-custodial Wallets like Myetherwallet, Metamask, Trust wallet, when trying to keep your ERC20 tokens.

In my few interactions with Coinbase support since last night  they opened a case and they asked me for the transaction hash. I was able to find that on ether-scan and I sent it to them last night. I am praying they see that I sent it accidentally to my eth wallet on Coinbase and I don’t know why can’t they just send it back to the dharma.io wallet I was using. I know I made a mistake and it’s my fault but I can’t lose $12,000 over this. So is their claim going to be the money is gone? I really don’t understand I feel terrible I have been sick since last night over this I can’t lose this money.

Thanks.

I don't understand how it ends up to the decision on transferring it to Coinbase where in the first place, WBTC is not supported there. AFAIK, supporting this coin is still under review together with other assets. So you mean you have other assets there and supposedly it should be those that will transfer to Coinbase instead of on your WBTC?

It happened now and it's unfortunate that only luck can help you. I don't see yet an exchange return those wrong deposits. Not discouraging you but just telling the fact. When did you send you a ticket? Try to wait more and always give it a heads-up.

The amount is kinda high. I hope they will consider returning it and it has a chance I think. But returning might take time even if they will approve it. But at least they approved it.

It is encouraging that they have asked for the transaction hash. At least this means they are looking in to it. Are you fully verified on Coinbase with KYC? If you are not, I suspect they will ask you to do this before returning your funds.

So is their claim going to be the money is gone?
It shouldn't be. Your money is categorically not gone. You sent an Ethereum token to the Ethereum address on your account. Coinbase control that Ethereum address, and so they can access all tokens sent to it. They can return your money, the only question here is whether or not they will. Since it is a significant amount of money they may be more willing to help, and if not, the threat of legal action should do it.

If you don't mind answering, what country or jurisdiction do you live in?

I live in The United States (Minnesota) . I am not sure about kyc but I am going to try to do it now. It’s my day off from work today and like I said I am sick over this and not able to focus on anything else really. Thank you everyone for your comments. My friend works in crypto as an in-house counsel at a place and if they try to deny me I may tell him about it. I admit I made a mistake and it’s my fault but $12000 dollars I can not lose that over it.

When you say "WBTC", do you mean Wrapped Bitcoin, the ERC20 token (https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/wrapped-bitcoin)?
I think yes, this coin is what the OP means, WBTC, an ERC20 token https://wbtc.network/.

I have also checked the exchange of WBTC and Coinbase doesn't list this coin. The only thing that you can do is contact the support. But, I have no idea if this will be back to you or not because this is a self-mistake. Many exchanges or wallet types have always noticed before transferring to be careful and ensure the wallet address and all information before the transaction or transfer. They will not be responsible for any loss because of the user/ mistake.
So sorry about this. But it can be one of the lessons, a big lesson for you to be more careful and check the information before doing something. Moreover, if it is for a newbie. Actually this kind of mistake can be also done by everybody. that is why it can be lesson for all of us here.

Hopefully, you are in luck and you can get the token back.

I am praying. Like I said I acknowledge my mistake wholeheartedly. I found the transaction hash and sent it to them. I am literally in shell shock over this this is too much money for me to lose. Is Coinbase based in the United States? Yes it was a wbtc coin. I will be honest I am so naive I did not even realize that was not a standard bitcoin when I purchased.

Next time don't use Coinbase because you don't have full control of your wallet so if you made mistake you can not able to recover them back as what they said from the faq. "Coinbase will not be able to recover tokens sent to the wrong address."

You are lucky if they grant your request to recover your token but for me, there is a 10% chance that they can grant your request to send or recover back the token.

I transferred it to Coinbase because I keep most of my assets there. I had bought some stuff on dharma because they had some things I couldn’t get on Coinbase. I kinda was moving $ back and forth a bit and I just made an honest mistake.

My heart sinks when you say that. They say the “review” takes five to seven business days so the next week is going to be rough. I think I’m going to have to wait that out and if they tell me they can’t retrieve I will have to loop in my friend who is an attorney in the crypto world. This seems insane to me that an honest mistake where I just pressed the wrong couple of buttons there’s no way to get the money back. It’s devastating.

I am praying they see that I sent it accidentally to my eth wallet on Coinbase and I don’t know why can’t they just send it back to the dharma.io wallet I was using.

Thank you so much for saying this. It’s made me feel a little bit better about the whole situation.

Say goodbye to your money and never do the same mistake again.

Always double check the addresses so that you are certain about it and you will not experience this inconvenience.

Bitcoin transactions are irreversible so don't expect that they will send it back to you. Try to use another exchange where you are comfortable in using it to prevent these mistakes. Coinbase is not the only platform that you can use, Binance is there to help you out with trusted quality wallet that will help you in BTC transactions.
