hello. i've been around bitcoin a long time, really a newbie still, but i was playing around with AMPL and somehow i can't figure out how i've lost a small amount of AMPL and ETH. i know this is a BTC forum, but it's the only crypto forum i go to regularly, so i'm hoping someone can help me out.

https://etherscan.io/address/0x962646b334fb68D6c96e4a8F6f7E9A72D039fCfa#tokentxns

  • about a week ago, i had 445 AMPL sitting in my metamask wallet: 0x962646b334fb68D6c96e4a8F6f7E9A72D039fCfa
  • and then two transactions out to Uniswap V2: AMPL 2: 0xc5be99A02C6857f9Eac67BbCE58DF5572498F40c
  • i don't know why this happened. i don't think i initiated the transaction.

https://etherscan.io/address/0x962646b334fb68D6c96e4a8F6f7E9A72D039fCfa

  • about a week ago, i had around .8 ETH sitting in the same metmask wallet: 0x962646b334fb68D6c96e4a8F6f7E9A72D039fCfa
  • then a transaction out to  Uniswap V2: Router 2: 0x7a250d5630B4cF539739dF2C5dAcb4c659F2488D
  • and another transaction out to: 0x1C8f8c2821791B744a3a0fF713CA7e8798504a42
  • again, i don't understand what happened. i don't think i initiated these transactions.

i'm going to assume that i just did something unknowingly, and somehow my crpyto is sitting somewhere that i can't figure out, not that i was hacked. is anybody familiar with Uniswap and can explain to me what happened and where my crypto is? if the answer is i was hacked, okay, lesson learned, but i would like to know what i did wrong, how to avoid this in the future.

edit: at one point, i did join a uniswap pool AMPL+ETH, so that i could join the AMPL geyser...that's what i was playing around with. but after losing 25% in a few days, i moved everything back to my metamask wallet, and was just sitting on it there trying to figure how to convert everything back to ETH and go back to my regular ETH wallet, but now i can't find the cryptos.
Unlike traditional banking where clients have only a few account numbers, with Bitcoin people can create an unlimited number of accounts (addresses). This can be used to easily track payments, and it improves anonymity.

I am not an avid fan of altcoins but I do use MyEtherWallet or Metamask before I start becoming serious about bitcoin. Nonetheless, the correct question would be -- Are you using the legitimate metamask browser extension? If not then it is more likely that you got phished or infected.

As far as I know, there has been similar numerous incident wherein their token are being transferred out from metamask to another wallet without the permission of the wallet holder. One of the most common issue is clicking on a malicious airdrop/ links which may compromise your device before you have realized it.

Similar issues on this link.

You can still use metamask though but this time integrate the use of metamask with the help of Ledger Hardware wallet devices to ensure that your private key is stored on secured manner and to avoid such incident. Just make sure that you are not entering malicious airdrop links nor giving out your seed phrases.

By any chance, did this "uniswap" asked you to enter your seed phrase or private key?  I suspect you're a victim of a phishing site. Check this topic created by witcher_sense on fake uniswap websites https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5267006.0

no more metamask.
One of the user comments here:

"Freaking yes. This guy also did the same to me, using metamask. My error was copy-pasting the 12 word passphrase. Is there a way to resolve this? I sent an email to support@metamask.io. You should do this too so that we denounce this thief and perhaps get our money back."

hello. i've been around bitcoin a long time, really a newbie still, but i was playing around with AMPL and somehow i can't figure out how i've lost a small amount of AMPL
You must do a research before playing a deflationary token. AMPL designed to have a stable value of 1$ so when its price decrease below that, the token hodler will also deflate their holdings and to match the equilibrium and this is called negative rebase. You will noticed that if it hits more than 1$ there will be additional tokens on your wallet.

Its same case on other deflationary tokens like yam. So investing on this could be risky but if the outcome is great you can ripped its profit.

As far as I know, there has been similar numerous incident wherein their token are being transferred out from metamask to another wallet without the permission of the wallet holder.
Im sure he is not hacked. But Im confuse why he decreases his eth too. This is somehow a mystery for me.

It's likely impermanent loss, i'm not sure if he's hacked or not either, his last transactions were on uniswap while when I checked his address on zerion it's shows empty (including pools). So still a mystery what exactly happened to op.

no more metamask.
Before you decide to drop MetaMask off, maybe try to find out how the heck you got hacked. It doesn't matter which wallet you use if you got phished or there's a keylogger waiting for you to copy-paste your seed. It will end up the same, your funds will be gone. Metamask is generally safe as long as you're doing proper security practice. Been using it since 2017 and my funds are never lost.

Im sure he is not hacked. But Im confuse why he decreases his eth too. This is somehow a mystery for me.
If he did join the pool without withdrawing (and by withdrawing, initiating a contract call to withdraw his tokens from the pool), then Uniswap should show his balance. If not, maybe he is indeed got hacked.

It's because of the transaction fee when rebase occurs. Uniswap is a DEX powered by ETH so it will deduct the fee in his ETH compared on a centralized exchange like Kucoin which deduct the fee in the percentage of the total AMPL that has been moved.

In reality, losing some token during negative rebase when is below 0.9$ is not a big deal considering that you will not flip your coin and just wait when the market recovers again which very possible because AMPL is not yet listed on Big exchange so there is still space for recovering. Negative rebase is done due to oversupply and decreasing the supply will drive the price up then positive rebase again when it reaches 0.9$ and above, This time you will recover your loss. Many investors didn't do research before investing.

Here is the very cool explanation about REBASE: https://www.publish0x.com/block-enthusiast-an-exploration-of-things/rebase-the-implications-of-supply-smoothing-xropreg

I am aware that rebasing will deduct some fees, correct me if I am wrong but I have seen 1 transaction transferring an amount of 0.739+ ETH going to this address 0x1C8f8c2821791B744a3a0fF713CA7e8798504a42 I guess 0.739 eth is too much for a fee deduction right? There is something wrong. Back to that address If you switch on the comment tab on etherscan you will see some comments like their eth was transferred without their knowledge, I guess it was a hack. Be careful next time be aware that there are fake wallets, fake metamask extensions trying to get your private keys or seed phrase always check official websites.

@wren I really hope you see this.

You got the UNI token on both addresses to claim.
That's like 3,5k dollar
