I agree with McEnroe, this will affect Djokovic especially if he fails to win another Grand Slam, he is 33 years old after all and he will probably never catch Nadal who is in #2 in overall Grand Slam wins and Djokovic will probably be unable to catch Federer who is #1 on all time Grand Slam wins. If that remains then it will haunt Djokovic because both Nadal and Federer were his biggest obstacles in the US Open this year but both decided to not participate.

why would one grand slam make such a difference so that cannot catch Nadal or Federer at the top with the number of grand slams?
he would catch Federer with the number of weeks at the top of ATP list, and will fight with Nadal for number of grand slams, since it is more chances for Nadal to win another one/two RG, than Federer to win any tournament

why would one grand slam make such a difference so that cannot catch Nadal or Federer at the top with the number of grand slams?
It makes whole lot of difference because right now if Djokovic never wins another Grand Slam then he only has himself to blame. Thiem, Zverev, Medvedev are chasing down Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.

he would catch Federer with the number of weeks at the top of ATP list
I respect your views but disagree. Just look at the rankings. Add 2000 ranking points to the winner and 1200 to the runner up, when looking at Thiem and Medvedev, one of them will be the winner or runner-up and will get those points. Nadal will be back at the French Open and maybe Federer again so I cannot see Djokovic overtaking Federer as most weeks at #1 position of the rankings

and will fight with Nadal for number of grand slams, since it is more chances for Nadal to win another one/two RG, than Federer to win any tournament
The issue is as simple as this, Djokovic must win more Grand Slams to catch Nadal and then one more to catch Federer and then another one to go one ahead whereas Nadal and Federer do not have to win any more to catch Djokovic because they are ahead.

The onus is on Djokovic to win and the pressure is on him too. Though you and others might disagree I think this was his best and last real chance of winning a Grand Slam because Federer and Nadal were not in the picture but I cannot see him winning another because Thiem, Zverev, Medvedev and to a degree Tsitsipas will be pushing for titles. At 33 years of age Djokovic will be fortunate to reach another Grand Slam semi-final with these players in the chasing pack. Just my opinion.

@JollyGood Zverev vs Thiem is the dream finale for this tournament, and I believe that this match will be really long, because both will badly want to win this tournament, and they won’t give up till the very end. Also I agree with your prediction as I too believe that Thiem has an excellent chance of winning this tournament, but then again we should not underestimate Zverev too because he definitely has the potential to defeat Thiem.

did not expected that, Zverev to play five sets, and Thiem to play only three
but when you have a deep look on the stats and on the match, Zverev was not that present in first two sets, so he actually beat Busta in three sets, from 0:2 to 3:2, and Thiem had a much harder task with two tie-breaks, that are certainly brought additional self-confidence for both of them

it will be an interesting final, both have similar chances IMO, but i will put something on Alex, and see where this is going to go

Thiem and Zverev are best friends on and off the tour. it will be an emotional rollercoaster for them both but Thiem will probably win this match and claim his first Grand Slam. To be fair Thiem certainly deserves it because he has been knocking on the door a long time now.

Here is Thiem recent Grand Slam record and the reason why I think he will win the US Open:

2016: French Open semi-final (lost to Djokovic)
2017: French Open semi-final (lost to Nadal)
2018: French Open finalist (lost to Nadal)
2019: French Open finalist (lost to Nadal)
2020: Australian Open finalist (lost to Djokovic)
2020: US Open finalist

Thiem has already beaten Djokovic and Nadal at Grand Slams and is finally at the age of 27 on his way to becoming a multiple Grand Slam winner. His record at the French Open shows he will be second favourite behind Nadal to win it and he already made the Australian Open final in 2020.

@JollyGood Zverev vs Thiem is the dream finale for this tournament, and I believe that this match will be really long, because both will badly want to win this tournament, and they won’t give up till the very end. Thiem has the best chances to win, but I hope that Zverev will win. I placed a bet on him to win the US Open (@33)  Grin. Of all the young talents out there, Thiem has made the most progression given his results at the grand slams. If he would be able to win the French Open against Nadal, than maybe the era of the big 3 is over ?!

Today Osake will play against Azarenka for the title and I am slightly leaning towards Azarenka. I think it will be a closer match, than the bookies expect, so I placed a bet at over 2.5 sets (@2.3).

On paper it was easy win for Thiem who won all 3 sets in under 3 hours, and Medvedev compared him with top level players like Djokovic, Federer and Nadal.
This was Thiem 3rd time win against Medvedev.

WTA Osaka - Azarenka
All odds are on Naomi Osaka side also won and last two h2h matches against Azarenka.
Osaka win again for me here.

My prediction is the same as most people, I will choose Dominic Thiem to win the final match against Alexander Zverev.
When compared from the data, Thiem's winning percentage is far superior to Zverev and Thiem's ranking is also above Zverev.
Moreover, Thiem is older than Zverev, therefore Thiem should be more experienced. So it is very likely that Thiem will be the winner.
This will makes Thiem the first Austrian tennis player to win US OPEN, if it manages to beat Zverev.

I agree, Thiem is the one who has regularly progressed further than any other player outside of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.

I think Azarenka will definitely give it her best, she might even upset the odds and win but Osaka is definitely favourite even though Azarenka battled past S Williams.

Thiem has the best chances to win, but I hope that Zverev will win. I placed a bet on him to win the US Open (@33)  Grin. Victoria Azarenka is a big underdog and i like the odds and there is no doubt that Naomi Osaka dropped a round from the early rounds and the theme for Naomi Osak in the tournament was dropping the second match and i wont be surprised if Victoria Azarenka becomes the champion and her theme was to drop the first round and then win the next two convincingly, over 2.5 sets is a good bet.

Alexander Zverev played a match of his lifetime in the semi finals after dropping the first two games i thought he surrendered the match and then to come back and win was incredible but coming against the inform Dominic Thiem he might struggle and he will be exhausted with the number of hours Zverev spent in this tournament and i am picking Dominic Thiem to win.

I wanted to open a dedicated thread for the US Open to keep posts on-topic rather than post have one thread dedicated to all of tennis which was started 5 years ago way back in 2015.

I think the comments posted in this thread have been good, it has good to have a discussion around the US Open in this thread.

why did you open new topic for US Open, and from the quarter-final, there is a topic for tennis, where US Open was discussed?
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1200104.0

there is not much comments there daily, but i do not see why do you expect that there will be more if you call your thread US Open 2020?

The magnificent return of Osaka and a great victory.
This young girl is really not afraid of anything and has the quality and psyche needed to become the greatest tennis player.
For a long time no girl has dominated women’s tennis but Osaka can change that.
The time of Serena and her domination has obviously passed.

Yes credit to her, she was played off the court in the first set and lost it 6 games to 1 but fought back after having her serve broken to find herself 2 games down in the second set. Well done to Azarenka for getting this far after all she has been through.

Next up, Thiem vs Zverev starts in 25 minutes time  Grin

Thiem wins 2-6 4-6 6-4 6-3 7-6 (8-6)

What a match to come from 2 sets down to win the tournament 3-2 on a tie breaker. Congratulations to Thiem who will probably replace Djokovic as world #1 at the French Open. Zverev should have won it in straight sets but lost the mental battle, even in the tie breaker he had chances but failed to capitalise and Thiem won it.

Nice win and nice comeback for Thiem, he deserved the victory! Lets hope, he can take some next steps and also win the French Open (against Nadal).

If I am correct, there was only 1 positive Covid case in the US Open, which is very good. This shows that with good organisation and with the correct safety measures, you can safely organize big events.

BIG WINNER!

I think this what separates the big 3 from the rest of the young guns right now. The big 3 (Djokovic, Nadal and Federer), really know how to dig deeper when it needed, and they don't melt under the pressure that's why they've become so successful.

And it looks like Thiem is getting closer or at least discovered it himself with this gruelling match against Zverev. Congratulations to Thiem for winning this years Covid-19 plague US Open 2020. And Kudos to the ITF for making sure everyone involved is safe.

Alexander Zverev won the semi final match coming from behind and in the final Dominic Thiem replicated the same and won the tournament. After the first two sets i did not expect Dominic Thiem to win the match but he was able to someone regain his composure and his will to win in the absence of the big three it was the perfect circumstance.

@ eaLiTy your prediction of Alexander Zverev getting exhausted coming into to the final was spot on as he lost the next three sets and may be due to exhaustion.
