Mobile Phone Wallet for bitcoin could be one of the best devices for daily life basis spending bitcoin currency. A certain article stated by Will Kenton (2020) that businesses are transforming the way to operate meeting the ever-changing needs of clients in the increasing use of mobile phones and devices. He added that the use of mobile technology such as smart phones, tablets or even smart watches, companies and users are adapting to online and offline transactions with these devices.

I created  this thread specific to mobile phone bitcoin wallet that will be very useful to community with the adaptation of bitcoin system. In line with the utilization of smart phones which do people always carry in their pockets and to where people always relied on making mobile phone as vital to the development of bitcoin system adaptation for the community consumption. Normally, there are good mobile wallets but out of all mentioned I prefer only few. I prefer electrum, mycelium nd ledger nano x, it is worth mentioning that ledger nano x is a hardware wallet but having the means of connecting with phones ledger live. I can still like some other ones like coinomi and atomic wallet which some people may not like due to one reasons or the other which the OP did not mention.

I expect certain contents in this writeup, such as:
1. Difference between custodial and noncustodial wallets. Like me, I can not use a wallet that private me with no private key, a wallet that is called custodial which are API key wallet in which another party manage the private key. Only novices and newbies are the ones using custodial wallet, noncustodial wallets are used by people that does not know the worth of a private key. For example, many people have in one time or another send tether to bitcoin address, this is what can be retrievable on noncustodail wallets but custodail wallet that provide people with no private key can not retrieve that kind of coins unless you contact the another party, but coins are lost is this way. About security, you manage your keys yourselves on noncustodial which just mean you are the one controlling your funds. You need to differentiate between custodial and noncustodial wallets.

2. The source code of a wallet. Is it open source or close source? People believe the source code available to the public/community (open source) are more secure and of which is true. You need to different the open source wallets from close source wallets.

3. About the issue of kyc. Kyc is extremely dangerous, you need to emphasize on this. Kyc wallets called custodial wallets are not advisable at all. Also, any wallet that support email is not advisable because email is online unlike the BIP39 seed phrase that can be successfully stored offline.

4. Using address(es) to sign a message. There are many wallets that can not do that, an example of wallet that can not sign a message is atomic wallets. Many other wallets can not also sign a message.

Just like the other wallets in the list, it has its ups & downs, just point out flaws that you can research, "for reference".

Those are well-listed wallets but still, I will prefer for the electrum because they are connected with the use of the mobile application at the same time on their software which supports different Operating Systems.

Although there is a lot of good wallets I already gained the trust of the electrum also they have the feature that you have a different wallet address so you don't need to create multiple accounts.

Still, if you want to download a crypto wallet it's better to download on their official website to avoid getting issues and trouble with the phishing and scam platforms.

On mobile, only very small part of your money should be stored on mobile, for daily or sudden spending. Your mobiles are easier to be lost (on streets, at company, at park, etc.). Your mobile can be broken by accidents, water etc. So I won't go all in to store my money on mobile.

Backup: seed, PIN code are the must to do. I only use Eletrum mobile and not use the other mobile wallets so I don't know but please read their user manuals to know how to back up your wallets.

Remember the topic is about mobile wallets precisely, and actually, signing a message from most of this wallets mobile version is impossible. Yes Coinomi allows you to sign a message from your mobile and i don't know about samourai; but like cryptoaddictchie wrote, many of this mobile wallets don't support signing messages, if you want to sign a message with Electrum and many more of them, you need to do it through a PC or desktop.

That is not true, except you use your PC to store your assets in cold storage, whilst your mobile is used for online activities, well, If you're not doing that and you have your coins on your mobile in a non custodial wallet, you can save as much as you want, as long as you can follow the safety instructions: going through the right source to get your wallet, only you should know your private keys etc. Lastly, your PC can also get damaged in the same your phone can.

So I won't go all in to store my money on mobile.

The best option is just to purchase a HW wallet, that way you never get to move with it, cause I know quite a lot of people who go out everyday with their PC, same way with their mobile phones

I can actually add the details you want to be added in the post but I was only referring to or focusing on mobile phone bitcoin wallet. If I will put all that things here then it would be confusing for the newbie which this post is in B&H intended for them to get a reference regarding on bitcoin wallet. Electrum wallet can be use for mobile as a cold storage wallet. nc50lc made a guide to set up a mobile as a cold wallet.

Okay, here's the procedure to create a cold-storage mobile Electrum wallet:

• 1. Install Electrum on both devices, and create a standard wallet on the "cold storage" device, that will be your main wallet that contains all the keys and shouldn't be connected to the internet even once (a newly formatted device/new device is better).
  Make sure that the seed was saved in a physical backup like a piece of paper.
• 2. Click the wallet's name on top of the screen and click "Master Public key" twice to open the QR code.
• 3. On the online phone, create a new wallet using the option "Standard Wallet->Use a master key", then click the camera icon to scan the cold-storage wallet's QR code.
  This will create a watch-only wallet version of your cold-storage wallet.
• 4. Confirm if the address in the receive tab is the same.

Now to use those wallets:

• You just have to create a transaction using the online watch-only wallet using the send tab.
• Fill out the recipient, amount, etc. then, click pay (select if you want to opt-in RBF, yes) and click the QR code icon below.
• In the cold-storage wallet, go to send tab and click the camera icon on the right side and scan the other device's QR code.
• The transaction will be imported to the cold-storage wallet, now click option->sign (enter your pin) and it will be marked as "signed" above.
• Click the QR code icon, then scan this using your online watch-only wallet and the signed transaction will be imported and now you can use options->broadcast button to send it to the network.

If you're not familiar with Electrum's defaut bitcoin denomination, you can change it from mBTC to BTC in the settings->denomination.

My opinion is that Jaxx shouldn't be on any lists of recommended wallets. I don't know how their mobile wallet works, but the security of their desktop client is awful. They save your keys on the hard drive of your computer. If someone knows that you are using Jaxx and finds the location where the keys are saved, (which isn't difficult to do) he can get hold of your funds.

The worse thing is that the developers know about this and they don't care. They have no intentions of making their software better. I wouldn't rely on anything they touch. I doubt that their mobile wallets were developed with security in mind if their software clients weren't.

There is an app called the coinbase, it is available on playstore, it is actually not a noncustodial wallet, it provide users with no private key(s), it is very different from coinbase pro which is an exchange belonging also to coinbase company. But I get your point, there is third one called coinbase wallet app, which provide users with private key, I have downloaded it some months back, the wallet generated me seed phrase but I still have a problem with the wallet as I check all around on the app and I was unable to access my private key on my device. Can you tell us how to check our private key(s) on the wallet? So far the company is proving that the private key is stored on our device. But, is it accessible?

It is worthy to know that coinbase mobile app is different from coinbase app, but coinbase app is a wallet which is totally custodial and it is the one most downloaded by novices and newbies not knowing the difference.

This would be another topic to discuss about the custodial and non custodial wallet same as with hot or cold wallet. You can start a thread with it in this section or in the other section which focuses on bitcoin wallets. I can give some answer with the list but not to all. It is also better to ask for more than one user to answer that question rather than a certain user to answer that wonderful question. I am also careful not to mislead others here I must be careful on saying things that might not be true. The best person who can answer you this are those developers of the bitcoin mobile wallets listed or mention above. I made this thread for ready reference to check it time to time  whenever needed.

Coinbase - Buy and sell Bitcoin (Just "Coinbase"): Their custodial wallet with simple buy and sell feature, same as the web version.
Coinbase Pro - Bitcoin & Crypto Trading: The actual Exchange that has real exchange features.
Coinbase Wallet - Crypto Wallet & DApp Browser: The non-custodial wallet app, just like blockchain()com's, it has no option to export private keys individually,
the only way to export the keys is to use BIP39 compatible wallets and tools.

I have to say I had a happy/sadness emotion with his OP. Happy! in the first instance, but sadness! with the reality of being a Google search listing.

They have improved it a lot, but a long time ago when I used it frequently the addresses were under the send / receive button, they have fixed it, in any case it is obvious that you use 99% Qr, but we know that sometimes it is not always available.

In general, it is made visually very friendly, the target of users would say that it is the one who likes pretty buttons, avatars and who likes to collect any shitcoin that comes into their life...sorry! to their wallet.

Honestly I’ve never attached much importance to mobile wallets, but it’s good to know that there’s quite a large selection that can meet everyone’s needs. I think in addition to which wallet we use it is also very important to make sure that our smartphones are up to date and that the device is not infected with some malware. While it is recommended that mobile wallets do not store more crypto, everyone should keep their smartphone safe - just as we do to our computers.

I have personally used Electrum Android with which I have never had a problem, and for complete security Ledger X + Ledger Live mobile which definitely allows you to prevent any hacking and loss of your funds.

I have personally used Electrum Android with which I have never had a problem, and for complete security Ledger X + Ledger Live mobile which definitely allows you to prevent any hacking and loss of your funds.

Some smartphones like Samsung have a default security that is bundled in the latest Samsung phones today. That's a good smartphone security in my opinion, because Samsung is working with the Mcafee antivirus platform and for other smartphones it has its own security vendors.


I have never used several mobile bitcoin wallets such as electrum, coinomi, coinbase, blockchain, and nano Ledger which are the safest hardware wallets among the wallets mentioned by the OP.

But there are some mobile wallets that the OP hasn't mentioned that I think are good, namely imToken and Trustwallet.

Choosing of wallets have been an issue of controversy for many cryptocurrencies enthusiast, especially within the beginners category. I understand you don't mean to mislead anyone but then, you could have at least added a scale of preference as to usage by cryptocurrency users probably on a download statistical base to aid users make their choices while your disclaimer still remains valid.
It's all good though, I understand that, all the work wouldn't be done to make it so easy for cryptocurrency enthusiast. Sometimes, you've got to research for the information you seek yourself. It's another elaborate one and I'm sure a lot of users have got choices to make now.
