That's a terrible idea: anyone can vote on a poll, which makes (alt) abuse very easy.

In some others forums that I am active on and that are much older than bitcointalk they have the option to make poll voting public, so everyone can see who voted for who. Would something like that be possible to implement here as well, forum software wise?

I don't think this will reach the top of theymos' Todo list. I've seen suggestions to add more control over which Ranks can vote, but that hasn't been implemented either.

I fully understood your point of view, Lucius, as I read your previous posts and I share most of your thoughts.

I am personally glad that there are people on this forum who are not afraid to say what they really think, regardless of the fact that it may concern some who think that they are some kind of gods of the forum and that some special rules apply to them.

I am glad my idea has fans and, as I see, you and icopress are two of them. However, if the contest is kept on Ivory Tower board and if it will have a rule to disqualify any user which would award votes, then there would not be necessarily needed to disable merits in the respective thread. If any merit occurs, the respective user is disqualified and, I think, this will be more harsh for him / her.

Your idea is good because it does not require intervention by the admin, but since there will be those who will not read the rules and will make this fatal mistake (maybe accidentally) and thus be disqualified, it would certainly be better to merits be completely disabled in that thread. Either way, some of it would be desirable to apply.


What is really incomprehensible to me is that someone is pressuring to publish the final results, and does not show even the slightest empathy for a person who is fighting with his family for life in a country attacked by his compatriots. I hope he gets his reward as soon as possible and stops whining in this thread.

For each merit that a candidate awards in the thread, he will have one vote removed from his total count. So if you get 20 votes for a certain category, but your rewarded people with 10 merits altogether, 10 of your votes would be disqualified. Ultimately, your final count is 10 votes.

I think you might have misunderstood what Ratimov tried to say with that comment. I think he was commenting on how long the competitions might last in the future if a second round (playoff) were to be introduced.

When you joined this forum, you started your online personality for this forum. You're either a likeable person or not so much. What I'm saying is the things you did or said made you who you are currently in the eyes of all of these people. It's up to you to change and make yourself more likeable. You cannot complain about people using merits or not liking you as much as another. It's a goddamn contest meant to be fun, anyone whining and crying needs muted and disqualified.

It's really disheartening that people always try to ruin something that was meant to be fun.

Current contest took so long due to the war context from Ukraine, which prevented icopress from counting the votes faster, from stopping the voting process earlier, from creating the BB code for announcing the winners, from talking to other people involved in the organization of the contest etc. (by "etc." I mean everything which is contest related -- these being activities which take a lot of time; and by "a lot of time" I mean dozens of hours). When a war is on course in your country, nothing is more important (including a contest on a forum) than keeping your family safe. Besides, how many would think about a contest organized by them on a forum, when they and their families' lives are in danger at any second?! I highly doubt that many would think anymore about finishing other activities initiated before their lives started to be threatened -- literally speaking -- at any second. Still, icopress did not abandon this contest and he is still trying, during the few spare time he has, to take it to finish line -- and this is admirable!

In my opinion, even if he would finish this contest in December 2022, this should be understandable, if the war would not end by then. In the context that you fall asleep but you don't know if you are still alive tomorrow, everything else excepting the attempt to keep yourself and your close ones alive is a minor thing... Bluntly speaking, how many have ever lived a situation like this? How many actually know the feeling of not knowing if tomorrow they will be able to open their eyes anymore?


However, coming back, in normal conditions, if such a contest would be kept for 2 weeks -- let's say, continued with a play-off phase, which would be kept also for 2 weeks, then the entire contest would take about a month. I don't see any reason why it would become more boring. A football championship lasts for one year and nobody gets bored to see the games. Besides, an eliminatory phase followed by a final phase represent a manner to bring more interest for many international competitions.


Besides, as yahoo said, this contest (together with other contests which took course within the forum) is meant for fun. There should be no rush to reach the finish very fast, as this will only make the fun last less.

yahoo62278 and others are right in saying that such contests should be seen only as a source of entertainment within the community. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just off the mark. There is no reason for anyone to get upset.

The question that everyone should ask themselves is whether they would vote if there were no monetary reward or other incentive to do so? If the answer to that is no, then I would suggest that they are in fact the losers in the whole process. I find it more distasteful when I see how such an initiative turns into a personal contest and the start of hostilities in the community. Yes, there are people who will exploit the system but I feel that the majority of users will exercise good judgment and take the high road.

No one needs to confirm anything, besides this thread has already said enough about the current flaws in voting, flaws that I intend to fix

I did not count the votes but if you win in one of the categories, instead of ranting, you will have a great opportunity to donate the won funds to one of the Ukrainian funds, but the most amazing thing is that when i wrote about it for the first time, you immediately deleted the positive feedback you left me.

I suspected that most of the mentions of your name in this thread were for a reason, but I could not think that you were so infantile. If I were a touchy teenager like you, I would exercise my right to exclude your person on the basis of at least three good reasons, but I will not do this, because I still hope that over time you will become more reasonable in your actions and words. Yes, it's a very reasonable idea. There's no doubt that some of the voting members are purely driven to nominate users giving out Merit if you nominate them. It's obvious and somehow an act of "buying" nominations. The people giving out Merit are getting more nominations and the people nominating such members will obtain a cheap bunch of Merits.
That's not how it works and it's outright manipulating the contest.

In my opinion, nominations where a Merit was given by the nominated member, should be removed by half because it wasn't defined in the rules but awarding full points would be manipulation.
Example:

20 nominations
10 nominations with Merit = 10/2 = 5 nominations removed
= 15 nominations

I would also be okay by removing merited nominations entirely to prevent the result from being manipulated by Merits but would prefer 50/50 since it was't stated in the rules.

And next time, we can add it to the rules that giving out Merit, if someone is voting for you, will remove this vote entirely.


Donating BTC awards to Ukraine sounds very good, much support is currently needed in Ukraine.

Yes, if you did it only a few times, it should be no problem.
It's more problematic that some people have merited every single time, when someone nominated them. And by doing so, it was incentivizing easy Merit grabs. I would also suspect, that probably a whole bunch of alts voted, if you check some of them, they barely write in other sections than Altcoins / Bitcoin discussion / Trading (traditional signature spam sections) and suddenly posting in that topic about Bitcointalk awards.
