On the mission to #EndSARS, two interesting events happened today - I'd try to be as detailed as possible.

- Earlier today, ex-presidential candidate, Adamu Garba sued Twitter's CEO and demanded for 1 billion dollars in damages. His claims were that Jack was actively prompting people to donate to the protests using Bitcoin.  Also includedin the court order, was a demand to censor Nigerians on Twitter. A nationwide, Twitter ban.

- After the Lagos state government placed a curfew from 4pm, protests continued and afterwards, military was deployed. From the reports I've heard, it's not looking pretty. I heard some people were killed at the Lekki toll gate. An unfortunate event. At the moment, Lekki is currently trending #1 on Twitter.

The Nigerian government have handled the issue of the menace wreaked on Nigerians by members of the special anti-robbery squad (Sars) in a very poor manner, the youths and others have called for the end of that branch of the police force for many years now, but the government either changes their name, or tell the citizens they have reformed them, but at the end of all that, this brutal annex of the NPF still mete out severe brutality on Nigerians especially the youths with impunity.

The government have never seen a protest in Nigeria like the one ongoing right now, #Endsars is everywhere on the internet, and I'm very sure no matter which country you're in, you should have seen details about that it on the internet, especially Twitter, some days back CNN aired details about the protests as well. That being said, I'm of the opinion that if the president and his government fail to control the growing anger in the hearts of Nigerians, this protest could lead to a revolution, and it wouldn't just be #Endsars, but it would challenge the oppressive, corrupt and irresponsible government Nigerians have had since 1960 independence.

Bitcoin users are not left out in the brutality of this officers, mind you that, it has somewhat prevented mass adoption amongst the youths of this African giant, this officers with no search warrant, collects people's phones/devices orders them to open it and if they find anything, so much so a bitcoin wallet, you are going to be labeled a fraudster/scammer, the situation is as dire as that, as this protests continue in Nigeria, whichever way you can join in, even through a post on social media like many celebrities and footballers around the world have done, it will go a long way to end police brutality in Nigeria.

Do you know what amazes me about SARS? The intention of it was to deal with the massive criminal problems in the country - such as robberty, motor vehicle theft, kidnapping, and so on.

They've taken their problems that their county has and have amplified them through militarized policing that disregards the basic human rights of people. They've extorted their own people with their new found power and have terrorized innocent people who look different - maybe they have piercings, dyed hair, etc.

Like what the fuck? You try to fix a problem by becoming the problem?

It's bad enough that Twitter is blocked for you guys, completely unacceptable in a democratic country. I just hope they leave your internet alone, I've been there and it's not fun when you can't use your cellular internet for weeks and have to take someone's LAN. Especially when you have a bitcoin loan to pay back but loss of internet preempts you from paying. Internet shutdowns are dangerously becoming a retaliatory action for mass protests. I hope your people know how to use Tor and VPNs, and you make a mesh network with Bridgefy like Hong Kong protesters did. You can use it to send encrypted chats to other people which the Nigeria government can't block. The population density of Nigeria's cities make this idea perfect.

It will only take corruption free government to give the Nigerian youth the type of reform they are looking for in the police system. The problem is not from the police or SARS to be specific but from the leaders, but from the look of things there will soon be remarkable positive change in the police force.

EndSARs has been on every Nigerians lips for the past couple of days (especially the youth as they're the most affected). Protest has been ongoing in almost all the 36 states, the government didn't take it too serious until international audience like celebrities added their voices to the protest. This protest all started from Twitter but it has been taken to the street. As a Nigerian youth involved in trading bitcoin, you're most likely going to encounter this abuses from the SARs officers if they find any trace of bitcoin transaction or chat on your device when they stop you for search.

Before I go on I want to enlightening you on what SARs stands for; Special Anti-Robbery Squad but instead of protecting the citizens against this robbers they turned on us and extort the youth at any given opportunity. You can read more on this protest, how it started, where we are now etc on Wikipedia

Borrowing a paragraph from the wikipedia page;
SARS officers profile youths largely based on appearance, mount illegal road blocks, stop and search, arrest without warrant, rape women, extort young Nigerians for driving exotic vehicles and using iPhones.
some information on the page isn't up-to-date as their has been numerous reports of death and not just the few mentioned, the most recent was during one of the protest; Heartbreaking! Nigerian Man Who Was Shot Dead During #EndSARS Protest In Oyo..

There has been report of the government dissolving the unit but that isn't something we're new to as there has been report of similar decision in the past but it was just to calm the heat down and nothing of that nature really happened. The reports of police brutality isn't something new so I want to use this opportunity to bring the discussion to the forum. What are your take on this issue and how both the citizens and government can help resolve this problem causing discomfort among the youth of my country.

you can't reform police brutality, without ending up punishing good people and rewarding criminals. in third world countries the ordinary people and their right wing extremism are much more dangerous than the police,

the police isn't the ancient regime of the the french,

third world people are like cockroaches, first they disassemble their own state structures, and then they flee to developed countries and try to disassemble those till everyone lives like in the jungle, i don't want to listen to these idiots anymore.

To acknowledge and honour our brothers and sisters, our heroes wey die for the struggle.

Our heroes.

To talk true, today 20th October get feeling pass normal October 1st independence day.

It's been over a year this post was created, few days after this post was created, a genocide was committed by the armed forces of our country in which order must have taken from the president and guess what, he's still in power. The armed forces match down to where the protesters were seated and shot at them killing many in the process. Today has been a day set aside to remember our heros (those who took courage to lead the protest).

Just want to give an update on the movement so far;
The brutality reduced to some extent, SARs was dissolved as that unit was shut down by the government after the incident we're remembering today. This though doesn't mean we're totally free as there has been some cases of harassment still been reported and I have personally experience it on three different occasions just this year.

SARs are still functional but guess not official. The struggle still continues.

It's approximately a year exactly the government sent Nigerian soldier's to kill and shoot her own citizens, I pour and shed tears whenever it comes across my mind.
The All progressive government has failed us, no going back on this...the cost of living keeps going higher every second and the number citizen in the country has full confidence to tell the youths to be patient ?
Fuck the hell no!!
The country is garbage, We'll fight till we get what we want.
You see young lad doing all sought of things, this is as a result of bad governance and foreigners voice out to call us scammers I get pained at the mention of that alone, if they know how hard things are here..... despite the difficulty,we strive to get going at all cause......we deserve better and will get our heart felt desires in a short while.

It's unfair after all the movement and the sad events that took place last year during the #ENDSARSPROTEST# the security operatives still continue in their pattern of harassing and brutalizing young people in the society, forgetting this young people can be their children and they are leaders of tommorow. The worst part of it the government see the youths as a threat and enemy all because they speak the truth and they are fighting for a better society. All I believe is that the effort of #ENDSARSPROTESTERS# won't go in vain.

What i personally see with the Nigerian system is that Nigerians are so dependant upon their corrupt and incompetent government for virtually everything, this has left the populace that is filled with different classes of fanatics with a very poor orientation that is causing the continent a serious setback in all ramifications.

Perhaps it night seem so and that's becuase of how the government have made it so difficult for an average or second class citizen to survive in Nigeria.  The basic amenities that could encourage a good means to a livelihood are not even in place. You can imagine though, not peculiar with Nigeria but a few other nations as well, placing a ban on cryptos due to some sentiments they hot from wherever.  Thwarting it's citizens means to a fair or stable life because, they don't want them out of control, they enjoy the pyramidal scheme so much that, seeking liberation becomes a criminal offence. Its fvcked.

On the thread, I applaud Nigerians once more for the unity and strength shown in carty out that protect. It was an uncommon coordination that demonstrated the power in togetherness, lack of sentiments for religion and race, power of the social media and the power of the people. In peace, we would archive. One love.

One year after the massacre nothing has changed. Infact the killings is worse now and all that the present government led by Buhari can do is pretend all is well. Innocent people are dying every day from the hands of the police and military in Nigeria.

Exactly!Nigerian government is a sturborn one,and they don't take or care about the opinion of the masses, imagine how worldwide that protest was,but still,Nigerian government have given a deaf ear to it,instead, they prefered changing the name of SARS to SWAT or what,I don't want to know. They continue killing and brutalising innocent youths everyday on the street. It is really bad.

One year after the massacre nothing has changed. Infact the killings is worse now and all that the present government led by Buhari can do is pretend all is well. Innocent people are dying every day from the hands of the police and military in Nigeria.

It's quite terrible, terrorism and banditry have suddenly become a plaque, i even heard SARS have been secretly reinstated. SMH!

I agree with you. Men in black still exploit and harass young boys everyday. Owning an iphone, a car or simply dressing good is considered a crime. The police run a quick 3 minutes investigation from the moment they see a young person by the point they approach you your case has already been decided. A yahoo boy they say. They demand huge sums of money and threaten to kill you if you don't comply. Nonsense has changed

The END SARS protest seems to be one of the best events that happen in the year 2020 and it made the government aware that the Nigerian youths are not just dummies to be played with and that they have the right to fight against any injustice brought to them by the authorities.  REST IN PEACE TO ALL THE LEGENDS THAT LOST THEIR LIFE DURING THE EVENT😭😭 MAY THEIR SOULS REST IN THE BLOSSOM OF THE LORD.😭😭😭😭😭

I think you should rephrase your statement. "Best event" doesn't sit well with me not when you have been a victim of the horrors of SARS. It's makes my inside rumble think of the trouble we went through, marching the streets with placards raised high above our shoulders like our lives depended on it. And some of us lost their lives.  If you lost someone to the bullets that rained on the protesters at lekki toll gate I'm sure then you will not be excited to speak about "best event" that happened last year. The Endsars campaign gave Nigerians unity as we came together to fight na common cause, it exposed our leaders for who they truly are. It also exposed a flaw in how we think, I remember reading through the comments and young Nigerians on twitter were counting the days of endsars campaign hoping it would last more than 30 days then the UN would intervene. We would get "help and attention" from the international community. This made me realize that we are still slaves to our oppressors, seeking for greener pastures beyond the shores of our land. Our mind is chained even though our hands are free..our thoughts are caged so we can't think outside the box. Our voices are loud but never heard. Nigerian singer, Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy made a song "Monsters you made". We lost brothers and sisters to the police brutality. Do we even know their names? Do we attempt to immortalize them? No We have been taught subconsciously to hate ourselves and tbt until we start acting free we will be slaves forever.

Uniform men has always been  problem to young people in some countries not just only Nigeria. I think the Uniform on them makes some of this men behave harsh. Back then when I was in nigeria I know how I was intimidated by Uniform men not once.  I feel the reason why the police are this way, their allowance is not enough, escorting money from youth is another kind of hustling for them.

It is the same way I feel. A hate to remember that evil event talkless of someone mentioning it as best event. But maybe he meant best in the form that it was properly coordinated by the youths even though no particular person coordinated it. More than a year after the massacre our irresponsible leaders are still acting worse than before. Nothing changed.

Welcome back to the forum. I read about your unban issue. It is good to have you back.

You know the recent case of Sylvester Oromini who was allegedly beaten to death by his classmates. The case has been shut down and the family is yet to get any justice for their son who was taken from them prematurely. How did Nigerians react to this? They made clout of this issue on social media, comedy skits and memes about bullies. Without addressing the main issue. I think it is high time we start loving and caring for one another. That's our ticket to freedom
