Just had a 4gb card say a message similar to vram not enough to mine with in phox.miner. Using a linux based mining operating system so it is not using alot of vram like windows machine do.
So are all 4gb cards trying to mine ethereum caput as of now? Embarrassed

reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/gpumining/comments/j98rue/no_you_will_not_be_able_to_mine_something_else/

Calculator for the dag file size for multiple other coins still able to mine with 4gb cards:
https://investoon.com/tools/dag_size

So the hashrate should drop with all the cards dropping off those ethereum pools right?

I think OP was referring to running in a Windows environment for his first mention of the rigs stopping. Linux will be able to continue on for a few more Epochs than Window due to less overhead loaded onto the card but that's only buying a few weeks. The end of the 4GB card is nigh. Raven is about to get a huge dump of cards unless ETC can implement their DAG update before then.

ETC may stop in few hours when it reach DAG 380.

How can you explain hiveos giving me this message and it being specific to this one card as I have been mining with it for months then all the sudden stopped working without any changes made?
While my rig did not mine while this one card was plugged in which was 4gb and continued to mine only after removing this card.
Don't call bullshit when you don't have the facts mate. Roll Eyes

Many have already claimed their 4gb have not been able to mine windows for weeks now. So can you still claim they are mining ETH?
Have you read the reddit page I posted or just spouting garbage?

Seems this may only be an issue with the Claymore miner?

Edit: Updating the drivers appears to have solved the issues for AMD users with 4gb+ cards.

I use phoenix miner so might have to switch over to claymore and put them on a separate rig to try them all out (3x 4gb cards), to see if it does work after update of the amd drivers.
Not sure if you can update the individual drivers for each different card you have in your rig under hiveos as it is a linux based os.
Haven't fiddled around too much in linux to figure out how the command lines work to do this.

Thanks OGNasty for the insight. Smiley

Mining on windows with 4GB cards are no problem. Use the right driver and internal gpu as first gpu.

There is no exact day or week, much miner developers update there software to mine longer with 4gb cards, so mine as long as you can. With lolminer 1.11 you can mine on windows up to december 2020.

There is a limit of what miner developers can do with the DAG issue. Miner developers can't do anything with the amount of GDDR cache that is loaded on the GPU when Windows starts, only way to overcome this issue is to switch OS which is not easy for some.

There always needs to be some GDDR used by the OS, I think in Linux its like 50mb or something like that so given the current DAG I would say we got maybe a month or so to go.

Most probably upgraded their farm already with 8GB GPUs, because we all knew this was coming months ago. Will probably be very profitable for the 8GB GPUs when the 4GB can't mine anymore.

So what is the exact week/day, when 4GB cards will not be able to mine anymore?

Very difficult to answer. I will restrict to AMD 4Gs. Also limiting it to full speed mining:

On most Linux systems the last epoch is 381, some do 382, but that is rare. Some very rare cases are 380, but that is an old driver then.
Overall to get to 381 use a recently released miner that still gets updates and is tested for that. Often it will need a split DAG file (but e.g. Claymore still uses a single big DAG ... that may end earlier)
Epoch 381 by the way will last from Dec 15th to Dec 21st.

On Windows the thing is more problematic. Allocating the max avail memory there is hard to achieve at all and if then with some very dirty techniques. That said: What works on system A may fail on B and vise versa.
Overall realistically 374/375 can be done. I did benchmark my miner on 376 on my system, but that might fail on any other. Also here: use recent releases!

Now the thing with reduced mining speed:
There were recent releases of miners that allow to continue mining on 4G card at slowing down speed. See here: https://medium.com/p/ea8f6298f813
Given that technique the speed will go down over time, but actually the card will not really stop to mine until you stop it (or your OC settings stop you, because this modes need a bit more juice / relaxed uv). But that way you are able to go on some epochs until you find it unprofitable.
Here an example for a normally 30mh/s card using this:

So well ... making long story short: It depends!

Check out lolMiner 1.56, an efficient miner for Ethash, Beam and many Cuckoo-Cycle and Equihash variants for AMD & Nvidia cards at low fees.

There was a video released about an hour ago on the epoch and even etc reducing it's dag size requirement back down to 2.9gb so 3-4gb cards can mine again on the ethash algorithm once that epoch on ethereum classic is achieved.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEPEPdRTukk

And those who are saying lolminer 1.1 is working, you are correct!
They have released a version in which 4gb cards can mine ethereum using their mining program in zombie mode. Grin

They have released a version in which 4gb cards can mine ethereum using their mining program in zombie mode. Grin

Yes I didn't think this was possible but its actually pretty smart what they did. They are going to get great dev mining fees as a result of this since many of the 4GB cards will have no choice but to switch to lolminer. According to some statistics its estimated that around 50% of the entire network hashrate is still on 4GB GPUs. So assuming the 4GB ASICs are nil, then there is going to be tons of hashrate that will move to this miner.

Eventually later in the new year it won't make sense to mine with 4GB even with lolminer but for the first few DAGs the speed slowdown is not that drastic. I don't think ETC is going to be profitable at all. Most likely all the ETH ASICs will move to ETC as soon as they can't mine ETH anymore sometime in the next month or so.
