Adblock blocking posts?

I was doing some browsing around, and links from one post got me here. I was pretty shocked because all I saw was the whole post as a big blank item, so I tought "well, maybe it was created, but later on deleted for god knows what reasons", so I tried to quote it to see if that was the case. It wasn't. Quote tab shows the whole text, but when hitting the "preview" button, no text is displayed. Screenshots of what I saw below:






Surprised about this, I tried pasting the link in Microsoft Edge, and it did display the whole post correctly. I decided to try using a Firefox Incognito tab, and it did also display correctly, so I was very puzzled. Out of the blue, I remembered that I have an ad blocking extension installed in Firefox, so out of curiosity, I tried turning it off and reloading the page. The post was correctly displayed. Trying to understand what the hell was going on, I tried to check the extension looking for what it had blocked, and it turns out it has blocked.... nothing!



I know the picture is in Spanish, but I believe it is understandable enough.

Now, anyone could try and help explain to me why this is happening? So far this is the only post I've seen this happening, but I'll keep looking

If it works in another browser and without this plugin it can only be because of this. I am currently online on my cell phone and I can see it correct. Use in Firefox the same blocker as you. I will test it tomorrow!

It might just be a heuristic that picked up one of the links in their post as sus...

Can you add a link to the topic that was altered? From what I see with the bit you quoted, they used a url shortener which could've been flagged (some url shorteners can make a false link look legit or are used in ads for ref commision etc).

It's blocking it because of the big "Advertisement" on the top of the topic, which is decorated, thus rendered with the <span> tag on your browser.

It's kinda right because that is indeed an "Advertisement" area. But it shouldn't remove everything.

Hmmmmm, that would actually make some sense (except blocking the whole rest of the post), but then why isn't this post also blocked? Or the actual ad behind that post....

Because the adblock works based on its filters. The filter used there is: a <span> element with the word "Advert" inside of it.

The post you linked only has the word advert(ise), but that's not what it's looking for. It needs to be inside the element specified in the filter (span).

For example, this post will vanish for you because I'm using the underline tag on the word, which renders as:

Alright I think I get it now. Oddly enough, I had to disable the ad blocker to either quote or merit this post of yours, but not the one mentioned on OP.

I'm also guessing there is no workaround this? Because it would be indeed absurd and pointless to have to disable the adblocker to be able to read some posts (not many luckily enough)

Not really, only that post has gone blank, whereas the other thread talks about the whole tab getting blocked.

You could just whitelist the whole forum (clicking the on/off icon shown on your 3rd image). There aren't really any ads here, and we can disable the ones from the forum auction on our profile settings.

I remember seeing such a problem being discussed sometime back and Theymos had some explanation why uBlock Origin blocks such posts so i did some search.

It's a bug in the "uBlock filters" filter list: complain to them. They're blocking every <span> containing the text "advert" with the rule: bitcointalk.org##:xpath(//span[contains(text(),"Advert")]/../..). This is such a general rule that there isn't much I could do to prevent it from blocking posts.

Ironically, I could easily make it not actually match the ad area, since unlike post contents, I control that...

Tried on Brave with Shield on, loads fine.

Most probably yours is blocking the added web elements like Bitcoin_Arena has mentioned, not just ads.

For instance on some forums, Brave disables embedded videos from Instagram/ Liveleak until I disable its Shield.
