Is this a normal thing for the US... I'm confused.

The UK counted 30 million ballots in 10 hours for the referendum in 2016 with a population of 60 million so I don't understand why it's so slow. Even for general elections here, it rarely takes more than 24 hours for the votes to come through and we normally know the winner by 3pm the following day (17 hours later).

at midnight UK counts votes non stop through the night.

in america. most counters were sent home at night and didnt start until the morning. they then have multiple systems inplace to triple check the votes are accurate.

some states were given a whole day off before starting a count because the wanted/needed to count it all in one go once the postal votes got delivered.

some states counted the in person votes. then now they are counting the postal votes.

..
smart thing would have been to allow postal votes upto day before election. and then get the counters to have a nice sleep in the evening of election day. so that they can start counting as soon as the ballot boxes arrive at the counting facility. and count straight away that night. and then count the postal votes when they arrive in the morning mail.

but thats too logical for america so they dont want that.

take trump saying pensylvania cant start counting postal votes early.. then says he wants to also ban anyone counting after the vote..
yep no logic. but trunp thinks he can win pensylvania by having no votes

Because USA is as the name implies 50 different governments all coming together in a huge circle jerk.

The real shocker is that Florida was able to get their votes counted so quickly.

And it’s not all of America, it’s just Nevada and Pennsylvania. If Nevada could get its crap together Biden would be announced as president.

But it really doesn’t matter who votes for who. Biden needs all 270 elector collage to actually go vote for him. 2020 is crazy nothing stopping for one of them voting for trump

That's not really correct. In many large counties ballots are being counted round the clock. I doubt "most" went home but feel free to provide proof. Results may not be released through the night in some places though.

The "day off" is also very misleading to say the least. In some states the law prevents votes from being counted before the election day and due to a large number of mail-ins the count is slow. In some others the mail-ins could be counted ahead of time and the election day turnout was lower than usual so it was quick.

The bottom line is - the election process is completely decentralized, each state running it differently and each county counting it separately, so it's not America this or that, it's more like "Pennsylvania's Republican legislature are morons and didn't want to make changes for the pandemic", or "North Carolina allows extra days for mail-ins to arrive" etc. Overall it's always been slow. Except that in most elections the result can be predicted earlier before everything is counted. Not the case this year.

I thought a bunch of European countries did similar though splitting stuff into states/municipalities. The UK is split into 200+ counties that have to count stuff individually for a few constituencies at once (though it might be a bit more central).

at midnight UK counts votes non stop through the night.

I think our postal vote deadline is a month before the actual election (or at least a week).

And yeah im pretty sure Germany and universities are still telling us not to use any form of automated counting machines (for fairly reasonable assumptions).

Do their counters take the votes too then? Most other countries should have a separate team that counts it than taking the ballots otherwise that's a lot of work...

This is so funny for the Dems. They try all this s*** to get Biden to win, and then what happens? Trump sees through much of it, and calls for an investigation, setting the whole voter fraud thing in front of the Supreme Court.

It takes the SC 8 years to sift through all the data, only to find that Trump won, after all. So Trump remains in office for 8 more years, and then has to fill out his winning term from 2020 as adjudicated by the SC.

Trump, 12 more years. Lol. Cheesy

Meanwhile, we are doing a Limited Con-Con to get Trump 2032!

Ok, no proof then, just how you imagine "America" works. This is what's really going on:

Quote
ATLANTA — A number of factors may have contributed to Georgia's inability to count all of its votes Tuesday night, despite most polls closing at 7 p.m. ET.

All told, 3.9 million Georgia voters cast their ballots before Election Day — that's nearly as many voters who turned out in 2016 overall. This year, however, after long lines during the state’s primary, many voters chose to vote early to avoid in-person voting on Election Day, out of fears that crowded polling sites would increase exposure to Covid-19.

This change required election officials to tally far more mail-in and early ballots than ever before, including in Fulton County, which includes Atlanta. But in Fulton County, tallying early and mail-in ballots became far more complicated when a pipe burst in State Farm Arena, which is a counting center.

Fulton County election officials halted counting for two hours and announced that they would stop counting for the night at 10:30 p.m. ET. Then, just after 10:30, officials announced they would instead continue counting Tuesday night. However, officials indicated that preliminary vote totals may not become available until after Wednesday.

And this is different from county to county, not just by state.

Are the army/navy nowhere near the polls? I get the US military is strategically behind even the European militaries that were decimated before the second World War but they can't fix a pipe???

Also, fair enough if they had to move but do the other states have as good reasons for a the huge efficiency lag.

Why would you need the military to fix a pipe when a plumber can do it? (and apparently did it within a couple of hours). The point I was trying to make is that EVERY COUNTY can have its own reasons why it's slow to count. Some unique, some more common across multiple counties.

Also, fair enough if they had to move but do the other states have as good reasons for a the huge efficiency lag.

The main reason is mail-in votes. Those take longer to count and some states are not allowed by law to pre-sort them (verify signatures etc). It has very little to do with vote counters taking a nap or whatever... I mean yeah, if the county can't afford multiple shifts they will let people have some rest but even if they counted 24/7 it would still take days in some places, that's just simple math.

Keep in mind that many other states are still counting too (the ones that have already been announced for one candidate or the other). It's just not in the spotlight.

Could they do it faster? Possibly. Worth spending extra money on equipment, training, etc for something that happens for a few days every couple of years? In most cases probably not. Sane candidates concede when the math shows they can't win and there is no drama 99% of the time.

Can anyone explain why results on CNN and Foxnews differ? Biden's vote count on CNN is 253 and on Foxnews is 264. Some of my local news publishers say that there was some kind of fraud with Biden's votes: mistyping, dead people's votes... I am really interested in this election because Trump or Biden's policies affect a lot to our country in particular and in East/South East Asia in general.

Fox News assumes that Biden won Arizona. This might be true but far from certain so CNN and others are waiting for more accurate results. The problem for Fox News now is that if Biden wins Nevada (6 electoral votes) then he would get to 270 in Fox News count and they would have to say he's the president-elect while Arizona is still being counted.

There is no evidence of fraud as of now. Trump is sowing doubt because it benefits him.

States botching mail in ballots...literally two days out and they can't officially declare a winner for PA or AZ. The Georgia state officials have given different numbers on how many ballots still remain. Not like they had months to prepare for this.

It's not as simple as that. In certain swing states - Pennsylvania among them - the Republican state legislature resisted pressure to allow early counting of mail-in votes. The reason being of course that in-person votes will favour Trump, whilst mail-in favours Biden. So if they delay counting the mail-in votes, they can control the narrative - and make it appear that Trump has an early lead, which then suspiciously starts to disappear as the "late" (early) mail-in ballots are eventually counted. Trump can cry fraud, and demand that the votes he wouldn't allow to be counted early can't be counted late either. In delightful parallel to the incumbent, the strategy is absurd, simplistic, and moronic.

It was a bit more sinister than that. PA Republicans actually tried to pass legislation to allow early counting (or canvassing, which would have saved time for counting) but they added limitations on drop boxes etc - stuff designed to discourage mail voting. Democrat governor vetoed it.

At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter that much. There's a month between the election and the electoral college meetings - plenty of time to count and verify everything.

Thanks for the clarification! That doesn't surprise me at all.

Sounds like PA and GA are getting close to the finish line now, with Biden ahead in both, and accelerating; should be all over soon. Well, apart from the months of legal wrangling and potential civil unrest.

Why is the US election vote going so slowly?

Because of the covid-19 most people voted by mail. Some states have laws allowing them to count those votes in advance, other states have rules to start count them only after election ends. I guess opening those mail takes much more time than counting the regular ballots.

Because it takes time to put down the wealthy people and governments of the world who are attempting to conquer the people or the USA through the lying media.

This year US presidential election have never been calm like the way it calmed now. Everybody is waiting to see the winner but the result counting is still on going but many are still wondering why this year presidential election result is too slow to know the winner of the election.
Many people are worry about rigging of the election which see Trump leading from the beginning but at yesterday evening Biden take over the lead 263 why Trump 214 which the counting is still on going.
I think Trump will still win he re-election that is on going, base on some state are not yet count which Trump still have a big hope in those state remain on count which is the area he really have fans.

I was watching the news before and they were saying penselvanian mailing ballots could be received 3 days after the election to still be counted - although according to the Democrats Biden ihas already won. Still if their post is efficient as Europe thateans someone could post early in the morning the day after the election (or 2 days after) and still have a balot delivered on time albeit risky...

It must be postmarked no later than election day. Some states give as long as 10 days but it's extremely unlikely that any significant number of ballots would be received more than 2-3 days after the election.

Too many conspiracies in this thread that literally made me smile when the answer is very simple. This election happens in the midst of a crisis, and as everybody expected, there would be some delays in the counting as a different way of voting exist in the election. And to be honest, I'm expecting that the current administration will be the one who would do something fishy about any election, cause they have the power and authority to do so.

People opposing to the leading candidate will make these stupid conspiracies about reasons why is their candidate losing. Pretty much in any election in any country. They would pout nonsense and blame it on the other, as they hate losing or hate the other party.

Yeah it's very state dependent based on when it has to be postmarked and such. I know some states make you have it in that day, regardless of postmarked, some allow it to be many days later.

But yeah none of this is going to actually matter at this point. For the places that already called it for Joe Biden (Pennsylvania, Wisconsin) the amount of outstanding ballots aren't even enough to change the fate of the election in these states even if they all go for Trump, which they will not.

On election day Trump was on his way to an easy victory, then they suddenly stopped the counting for a few hours, which has never happened before, and then suddenly his large lead in several states started evaporating, and then overtaken.

So to answer your questions, they probably needed time to get the fake votes.

Oh, a bitter trump fanatic, so sorry for your loss buddy. progression of votes is expected to be slow in this time of crisis. I am not even a voter of American, and not even in America. Plus, Trump is the one who has power to fake anything, he has the authority to do so. So if there is nothing even suspicious about this. and yeah, also, this kind of overtake really happens in politics, even in other country. So stop being bitter, and accept that your president is now BIDEN.

First the election process took so long this time. Secondly the postal mail votes changed the course of election from trump to Biden and trump is claiming these votes are fake and they were used on purpose to give him a loss. If trump did not agree on the results, this election process may extend even further.

Counting remains under way in key US states. counting isn't over in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, Nevada and North Carolina. the remainder is in Alaska these votes include postal votes. the method of counting votes by post is extremely slow. this is often because the signatures and addresses of voters and witnesses need to be verified the votes were reduced within the counting machine. In some states the verification process begins long before polling day. due to this the voting within the US election goes at a slow pace.
