Former Congressman Proposes Giving $1,500 Stimulus for COVID Vaccine

As the holidays are quickly approaching, many Americans are hoping for the possibility of a second round of stimulus checks in the near future.

John Delaney, entrepreneur and former Democratic congressman for Maryland, has proposed exchanging the $1,500 checks as an incentive to get people to take the COVID-19 vaccine. Delaney told MSNBC, "The faster we get 75 percent of this country vaccinated, the faster we end Covid and the sooner everything returns to normal." He added, "We have to create, in my judgment, an incentive for people to really accelerate their thinking about taking the vaccine."

Congress has yet to approve another round of stimulus checks, with Democrats currently advocating for $900 billion as a starting point, and Republicans wanting something around $500 billion. Delaney's proposal would be estimated to be around $380 million, which he believes is the best option for getting things back to normal.

He explained, "The faster we get 75% of this country vaccinated, the faster we end Covid and the sooner everything returns to normal, which means we don’t need any more programs. So if you can only spend $400 billion, this is what you should spend it on."

Paying people to take a rushed vaccine seems like sliding down a slippery slope to catastrophe.  I feel like we're in the opening scene for a great zombie apocalypse movie.  What type of precedent is being set here?  Maybe soon we'll start paying people to die younger as a way to fight the shortcomings of social security?   Thoughts?

Doing this or giving out a tax break is the only way people are going to take this thing. You need something like 70 percent of the population to have antibodies for herd immunity, and it's a tough sale to convince Americans to get a vaccine for something with a 99.5+ survival rate.

Another bold prediction of mine is that universities might require its students to receive a COVID vaccine in order to be in class or they might have to sign some sort of exclusion wavier.

I'd like to see Americans require public servants to receive a vaccination before anyone else.

Agreed, this is pretty fd up. Im no anti-vaccer, but to force people to take this brand new rushed vacs for a stimulus check is “unconstitutional” in my mind. If you want to mandate something for gov assistance  make welfare recipients take drugs tests already.

I guess the Uk will be the guinea pig for us all.

This is actually something that is tried in developing nations to incentivize people to take normal vaccines - such as malaria, polio, and so on and so forth. It's really more of a way to get people to stop working for the day/week and to travel to the hospital and get these treatments done.

Not something that is needed in Western worlds where hospitals are abundant and a vaccine is within reach for people. Makes me think for a moment, is the Coronavirus vaccine free for people who live in the US?

Of course it's free. After the $18k you spent on insurance, $2500 deductible, and 30% copay, just like all the awesome free healthcare things that we have here.

Heh. Well, I'm pretty sure that the coronavirus vaccine is actually going to be free though. Though administrative charges *rolls eyes* are allowed See the CDC quote and link below:

Vaccine doses purchased with U.S. taxpayer dollars will be given to the American people at no cost. However, vaccination providers will be able to charge an administration fee for giving the shot to someone.

Administrative fees...... Guess we'll get to see what that looks like in the coming weeks / months.

thats the standard 'clause' to appease the pill mill doctors that charge for everything.
the good thing though. the vaccines will be given by proper hospitals/medical facilities. so pill mill doctors wont be handed a fridge full of vaccine to dispense.(well they shouldnt)
after all pill mill doctors just hand out prescriptions for profit.

so relax. the main hospitals/proper medical facilities dispensing vaccines should not charge people
and if you are being advertised a vaccine from your local pill mill at $$. dont take it. they just want to charge you for a piece of paper to then go to a proper medical facility to get a free vaccine.
.. they may advertise it as a 'queue jumper script'. but stil not worth it. so dont pay it

Well that's the thing for some people, even in 'legitimate hospitals' they'll still find ways to pull as much money as they can from them as possible and they can't afford that. Administrative fees could be something in the realm of $30-50, which is what the CDC is saying as of right now (can't find where I saw this, though I did)

I hope there are programs established for low income people to have these all waived, and I do expect for this to be the case.

We want everyone who really needs this vaccine to get it, so I hope they establish the right systems to ensure it gets to everyone who needs it.

Administrative fees could be something in the realm of $30-50, which is what the CDC is saying as of right now (can't find where I saw this, though I did)

no. hospitals wont send patients a bill.
hospitals charge the government/insurance company.
insurance companies do allow for vaccines for free

take the pfizer vaccine. its actual cost is £6($10) which the government pay pfizer. the government then pay a logistics/distribution company something like $5 to deliver it. (its less because its bulk delivery per hospital) and then the hospital ~$20 for the nurse, rubber gloves,, syringe, needle and the paperwork for the 2 minutes it takes to say 'hi, can you confirm your name, thanks... lift up your sleave......... and its done'
this is where the 'us government cost of $30-$50 per vaccine' adds up

in america medical insurance companies are willing to pay this $30-$50 because its far cheaper to pay upto $50k for 1000 people than to not.. because by not they then later have 400 asking them for mild symptom meds and 150 that require hospital care/intensive care. as those costs to the insurance company would be more than $50k

imagine it the 3 weeks of intensive care treatments of 100 people would be more then $50k total.
maybe with vaccine they can get that down to 5 people. so big saving

..
as for the debate of support for the poor.. thats an apples and oranges debate of medicaid/medicare about who pays(insurance or government)

Yeah that's not how it works in the US. Hospitals (if someone is unlucky enough to get the vaccine in a hospital) will definitely send massive bills for everything except perhaps the vaccine itself, so $10k - $10 = $9990 billed to the patient. Pharmacies that usually do vaccines for flu etc often subsidize those as loss leaders... not sure if that's going to work for COVID-19 though.

Insurance companies don't "allow" shit. If by some miracle they make it "free" it will be rolled into next year's premiums.

If that's how it worked, the US would be the healthiest nation in the world. But it isn't. Go figure. It's almost as if the for-profit healthcare and insurance industries found ways to make money off sick people.

All of this is totally true, they'll charge you about $500 for the 'device used to control bleeding' which in regular terms is just a 'Band-Aid' and crap like that. I think we all see a story or two about that stuff every so often.

The only way companies would allow this is if government would force them into fully ensuring that the vaccine is free, which is not something we know much about right now. I'm expecting public outrage to be large enough that this will be the case in the end though.

As to the part about premiums, not something we'll know now. But that's a sneaky way to handle things and I assume that'll probably be the way things go as a way to hide it from the customer.

Some things Franky should really shut up on. This is why the US cannot succeed with socialized medicine, the established power structures would bleed people dry. It'd be 120% for them not for the people.

Regardless, what Trump said was the vaccine would be free, but when I saw the list of operations that would be dispensing it, like CVS and Walgreens, it's hard to believe that. Maybe if you present an insurance card, then it's 0 copay. Maybe. But a lot of people are never, every going to pay 35 or 50$ or any sum for this flu shot.

even in capitalist country. there are ways to not charge the patient/insured/customer.
EG vaccine is $10 but government pay a hospital/insurance/walgreen $30-$50 to dispense it.
thus no money changes hands from the patient/insured/customer

its simple

I don't agree with their strategy of paying people to be vaccinated and mostly the saddest part is that people will not trust them when they are saying things like this one.

On the other hand, governments are trying to save the global economy from a deep recession by trying to vaccinate the population and return economies back to normal. It is like they are giving 1,500 to get back 1,500,000.
2020 will be similar to 2008 recession when Lehmann Brothers' fall.

Thoughts?

Well, you'd almost have to pay them. I mean, getting jabbed with something that you don't really know about is enough. But this one is -70° F. So, they better pay me if they are going to do it... about a $billion dollars, that I will write into my extended will if the vaccine kills me.

I pay a fair amount to NOT have insurance at all so these medical/industrial complex psychos who own the American herd don't have their hooks in me and can pressure me less in things like this.  I got a slight reprieve when Trump was in I think (I have an accountant do my taxes and don't look at them) but it seems almost a sure thing that Biden's admin will make up for lost time on the Obamacare racket.

That reminds me, I should move forward on setting up for renouncing my citizenship.  It's not a trivial process, and I'm not from the right 'chosen' ethnic tribe to have easy dual citizenship.

The whole situation reminds me of books like 1984 and Brave New World.

The conclusion I've reached is that the tough preventive measures, like lockdowns, should have been applied only to the elderly and people with risk factors. Come on! The mortality rate is less than 1%.
