Another fake electrum wallet on google playstore

This fake app was release in July 02, 2020 with over 1000 downloads.

It is a fake wallet because it was released in July but claiming to have been existing since 2011 which was the year original electrum wallet was released. Electrum wallet is an online wallet but this one claims to be a cold wallet to safe private key offline. I have never heard of a paper wallet that save private key on mobile devices before, but this fake electrum wallet claims to work in such a way.
Also it claims the private key can remain offline in a way users can go online with watch-only wallet.

And, normally, electrum wallet can be used as cold wallet in which two devices will be used, one for cold wallet and the other as watch-only wallet, but the wallets app that will be downloaded for this is still the normal original electrum wallet on electrum.org in which the signature can also be verified on the site.

This is just another fake electrum wallet with another scam tactics. Downloading the original electrum from electrum.org is the best rather than using third party sites like Google playstore to download it for not to download the fake ones.

Nice catch, rest assured scammers or what ever they are called they don't give up and never satisfied. We all just need to be careful on apps or platform we come across, one small mistake and you are done!

i've not seen threads of the users who lost coins from electrum wallet they download from playstore though. i downloaded one actually coinomi just recently to try it out and i hope it isn't a fake one because i have already transferred a bit of coin there.

looks like this is going to scare everyone who would want to try using their phone to store coins. not good to be paranoid with all the apps installed, if you have mewconnect too, try checking out whether your ETH are still there.

You were probably searching with the key word "electrum", adding a bit of tweak to it like "electrum cold storage" would reveal a number of fake and phishing sites

i downloaded one actually coinomi just recently to try it out and i hope it isn't a fake one because i have already transferred a bit of coin there.

I do not use coinomi wallet and cannot ascertain now if it can be verified using a signature, but I remember it isn't open source, which is a huge red flag. If you're going to use it, I'll recommend you only keep very small amounts there as the wallet is not highly recommended.

Rather than downloading directly from play store, you could follow the official website which would usually have a link to the app.

I think what he meant is that he can't see this fake Electrum wallet if he just types "Electrum" or Electrum wallet" inside PlayStore. So I decided to check, and as a matter of fact I could see not one but three fake Electrum wallets inside the PlayStore, even though I have the real Electrum already installed. Here are two more

It is a fact that huge majority of people download their apps via PlayStore and not directly and have no idea how dangerous that can be, so this is becoming a real issue now. There are several cases each month, and this number will keep increasing if Google doesn't react and start checking them manually.

Thanks. I have played my role and reported all the three malicious apps. It only takes about 10 seconds if one is reporting directly from the google play app.

I thought that's the same fake electrum app with this thread: Fake Electrum.

Due to the price of bitcoin lately, there's another proliferation of these fake apps and they're circling again through Google Play. The interface of that another fake electrum is very much different from the legit one.

Download from Electrum site is true but be cautious of phishing sites of Electrum.

The official website of electrum has reminders about fake and phishing links. Bookmark it and don't just type it on google.

Yeah, bunch of fake reviews for that app, standard pratcice of those scammers. It is unbelievable that fake app can be on PlayStore for four-five months without Google removing it. I mean, there is no way that no one in all these months didn't report the app. Or Google just casually ignores them if only few are made.

Wow I never heard, taught nor imagine their is a fake wallet. Thanks so much for this information. Let's all be watchful and help each other with genuine useful informations like this.  Anyways let me go and report this apps. To avoid such review of this fake apps on the Google play store. It's quite unfortunate and incredible Google left this apps there for over 2months without removing them immediately. Let's be watchful.
