In a thread in the economics forum we were discussing if there might be a way to calculate and/or estimate how many coins have been lost and destroyed.  These coins are now destroyed and others are "obviously" destroyed for example everything sent to 1BitcoinEaterAddressDontSendf59kuE

I wonder if there would be a way to automate the discovery of these dead end addresses and calculate the sum of all coins that have been sent to bitcoin purgatory.  I say purgatory because there is a finite but very small chance they may someday be recovered.

This is important from an economics point of view because when you calculate the monetary base of the system it is equal to the BTC produced to date minus the BTC lost (lost private keys) minus BTC destroyed on purpose (like these coins were).  Currently, for Bitcoins the money supply is for all practical purposes equal to this monetary base and the money supply is used to estimate inflation, etc.

Probably just some sort of spam. Fucking spammers. Spamming the blockchain. Who could they be. I don't know about you but I'm intrigued.

Actually, Mark Karpes of KalyHost/MtGox is the one I'm waiting on now. As far as Atlas is concerned, the domain is mine-- but we need Mark to reset the password to this account AND change the email address. Still waiting.

(KalyHost is the absolute worst customer service most difficult host to get a hold of in the world, and why Atlas ever used them is beyond me).

It would certainly be interesting to find out! But basically, there is no way to tell if anyone has knowledge of a private key associated with a Bitcoin address. And there shouldn't be, as that's exactly where the anonymity of Bitcoin is derived from.

You are right about that. But as far as I can tell, all the addresses found must be checked by a human, to assess whether it is probable that it could be a legitimate address created randomly.

Also, I think these people purposefully sending Bitcoins to invalid addresses would be only a minute part of the total number of Bitcoins lost. So in any case all we would be able to say is that "a minimum of x Bitcoins are probably lost". Which is kind of an unexciting statement .

nah dude. there are a lot of nice word number combo algorithms for producing password dictionary rainbow tables.  the task of looking for addresses containing english/russian/etc words would be fairly easy to catch.  anyone know of some solid code to dump the block chain into well formatted xml or csv? <-- if this can be had the task of finding interesting looking public keys easy.

The 20 character sentences are probably addresses, while the longer ones are coinbase parameters in coin generation transactions, I think. Of course this doesn't give us the actual addresses, as these are base58. But this is another way of losing coins.
